Coleman redeems himself, defense in win
Steve Patton

LANDOVER, Md. - Kurt Coleman lost his starting job following a missed tackle three weeks ago.

He regained it Sunday, and made sure he won't be heading to the sideline anytime soon.

Coleman was the face of a rejuvenated Philadelphia defense Sunday, intercepting three passes as the Eagles responded to a string of shoddy performances with their best of the young season in a 20-13 win over Washington.

"It's tough," said Coleman of being benched. "I'm a competitor and I know what I'm capable of doing out there. But the first three games I wasn't getting it done. That was apparent. It was a humbling experience."

Coleman returns in a big way
Safety collects three interceptions in first start since benching

LANDOVER, Md. ? For Kurt Coleman, getting benched was really nothing after what he has been through in life.

Five years ago, Coleman almost quit football after tackling Tyson Gentry in a practice at Ohio State, leaving the scout team wide receiver paralyzed. But Gentry?s family told Coleman it wasn?t his fault and supported him to keep playing.

Later that year, Coleman?s father, Ron, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The elder Coleman is cancer free after surgery and chemotherapy.

Coleman responded to his first start after being benched with three interceptions in the 20-13 win over Washington on Sunday.

Coleman is the 11th player in franchise history to record three interceptions in a game and the first since Joe Scarpati in 1966.

?It is tough, I?m a competitor and I know what I am capable of doing out there, but for the first three games, I wasn?t getting it done and that was apparent,? Coleman said about sitting. ?And, I think it was a humbling experience. God taught me a lesson and I just worked my butt off.?

The second-year pro made his first start in Washington last season year here and recorded his first career interception.

?I like that we keep winning and that is the most important thing,? Coleman said, ?but, it is something special to have my [first] career interception and now three in a game, so it?s been a blessing to come down to Washington.?

Philadelphia Eagles' Kurt Coleman leads defense to redemption against Washington Redskins
Published: Monday, October 17, 2011,
By Brad Wilson | The Express-Times

Kurt Coleman did something Sunday afternoon he hadn't done since high
school.

And in no small part because of Coleman, the Philadelphia Eagles did something they hadn't done in what seemed like an eternity -- win.

Coleman, the Eagles' second-year strong safety, became the first Eagle in almost 46 years to intercept three passes in one game, and
Philadelphia kept its season alive in an 20-13 win over the Washington Redskins.

Coleman wouldn't mind playing every game on the Redskins' FedEx Field, where all four of his career picks have come.

"I had my first career interception here and then I had three in one game today," said Coleman, who became the first Eagle to intercept three passes since Joe Scarpati against the Giants on Oct. 23, 1966. "It's been a blessing to come down to Washington. And I like that we keep winning while we're here."

Winning is what the Eagles do at Washington; they came to the perfect place to end their three-game losing streak. Philadelphia immolated the Redskins here in 2010, and Andy Reid is now 10-2 at FedEx Field. Maybe the Birds should wear home colors here.

Coleman certainly felt right at home. It seemed as if inept, flailing Washington quarterback Rex Grossman (9-for-22, 143 yards, 4 interceptions) thought Coleman was on his team with the aerials he tossed the Eagle safety's way.

"The first interception (at the Eagles' 4) I was just reading the tight end (Fred Davis) and I thought they'd try to hit him deep so I was cheating that way," said Coleman, whose last three-pick game came in 2004 when he was playing for Northmont High School in Ohio. "The other two were just instinct. I felt Rex would throw the ball and I broke on the ball. You hope the quarterback will throw the ball, but you don't know if he's going to."

Actually the way Grossman was going, you did almost know he would throw, and that it was going right to an Eagle. Coleman's partner at safety, and fellow second-year player Nate Allen, hauled in a Grossman deep pass in the second quarter to set up a field goal.

"They ran a fly pattern up the field and I turned around and the ball was there," Allen said. "Like he was throwing it to me."

It wasn't just the pass defense that throttled Washington. The Redskins, who came in with the No. 8-ranked rushing offense in the league, managed all of 42 yards against the Eagles' No.30-ranked run defense.

Washington tight end Chris Cooley, who Nnamdi Asomugha knocked out of the game with a punishing first-quarter tackle, couldn't believe the 'Skins couldn't run.

"I thought that we would have run the ball better on the that team," Cooley said. "I don't think we played physical enough."

Eagles' Coleman named NFC Defensive Player of the Week
October 18, 2011

Three weeks after getting benched, Kurt Coleman has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Coleman, benched during the Giants game after missing a tackle that turned a short Victor Cruz catch into a 74-yard touchdown, got his job back last week and responded with a franchise-record-tying three interceptions in the Eagles 20-13 win over the Redskins in Landover, Md.

Coleman, a second-year pro from Ohio State, became the first Eagle with three interceptions in a game since Joe Scarpati in 1964, and he did it in his eighth career start.

?I?m a competitor, and I know what I am capable of doing out there, but the first three games I wasn?t getting it done and that was apparent,? Coleman said. ?And I think it was a humbling experience. I just worked my butt off the last couple weeks, so now I have the opportunity to make the best of it.

?My goal is to have three interceptions every game. I want to continue to build on that.?

Kurt Coleman?s career day for Eagles earns him defensive player of week award

(Evan Vucci/Associated Press) - Philadelphia Eagles free safety Kurt Coleman, right, intercepts a pass intended for Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis (83) during the first half of an NFL football game in Landover, Md., Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011.

PHILADELPHIA ? Kurt Coleman earned a seat on the bench after allowing a short catch to become a long touchdown by missing a tackle twice on the same play.

The second-year safety didn?t whiff on his second chance to start.

Coleman had three interceptions to help the Philadelphia Eagles to a 20-13 victory at Washington on Sunday. His performance earned him NFC defensive player of the week honors.

?I thank the Lord that I was able to make the plays, but my goal is to have three interceptions every game,? Coleman said after the underachieving Eagles (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak.

?I want to continue to build on that. This team needs to build on this and continue to get better and better. We will take this one game at a time. We know we have a long road to go but if we continue to play like we did, things will start rolling our way.?

Coleman became the 11th player in club history to have three interceptions in a game and the first since 1966. He also had six tackles, helping the Eagles shut down the run for the first time this season.

?We realized that we were 30th in league in stopping the run and everybody put an emphasis on doing their part, stopping the run and making plays,? Coleman said. ?I did spend more time in the film room because it needed to be right. And we needed to put in the extra work.?

Eagles? Kurt Coleman relives three interceptions from the past
By Marcus Hayes / Philadelphia Daily News
Thursday, October 20, 2011

Brennen Glass could not escape Kurt Coleman.

Not on Sunday evening, after Coleman intercepted Rex Grossman three times in Washington. Not in their matchup seven years ago, when Coleman intercepted Glass three times in a high school battle as juniors.

"I was watching ?SportsCenter,? and there he was, talking about it," Glass said Tuesday night. "I had, like, four interceptions that season. And he had three of them."

Coleman?s three picks Sunday sparked an Eagles win and earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors in only his sixth NFL start.

His three picks in 2004 off Glass, a future all-state passer in Ohio, secured a huge win for Clayton Northmont and cemented Coleman as a top recruit, helping to clear his path to Ohio State and professional football.

"He was one of the top quarterbacks in Ohio," Coleman said Wednesday. "For us, it was about establishing our position and trying to make a name for ourselves by beating Springfield South."

Kurt Coleman and the right pick
Bob Ford, Inquirer Sports Columnist

In the small hamlets and towns that hang along I-70 west of Columbus, Ohio, the Friday night high school stadiums are illuminated like sparkling lights spread across a Christmas tree. They even seem to point in a straight line toward Ohio State. The huge school exerts such a gravitational pull on the young players that the lucky few good enough to play there seldom bother to resist.

"For these kids, it's like the Holy Grail to play for Ohio State," said Collin Abels, the defensive coordinator at Clayton Northmont, a high school that dangles along the interstate chain just west of Dayton. "It's a dream school for them."

That isn't unique in the United States. It is probably the same for young basketball players who wear out the driveway hoop in Indiana and dream of Bloomington, or the football players who grow among the fields of Nebraska and dream of Lincoln. But the kids in southern Ohio can match their dreams with anyone else's.

Abels was the defensive backs coach at Northmont before he became coordinator, and the best player he ever coached was Kurt Coleman, the Eagles safety who reclaimed his starting position with an exclamation point Sunday in a three-interception game against the Redskins.

"I knew he had something special when he was here, because he's such a good person and such a hard worker, and you start to think he can play Division I, but you're not sure how big a school," Abels said. "Then he goes to Ohio State, and you're not sure how much he will play. Then he starts three years and is captain, and then he's drafted by the NFL. And you think maybe he'll be able to play some special teams. And now he's a starting safety in the NFL."

Coleman was a very good high school player from the start, but it was his 2004 junior year that Abels calls the single-best season he's ever seen, and it was that year that caused the great eye of Columbus to settle on the Northmont Thunderbolts. It was that year, particularly against Springfield South, another charm on the I-70 bracelet, when Coleman intercepted three passes thrown by Brennen Glass, who would be selected first-team all-Ohio quarterback that season.

"I guess I should text Rex Grossman and tell him it's all good. It can happen to anybody," Glass said. "I threw 30 touchdowns that year and had 10 interceptions, and Kurt had three of those picks."

EAGLES: Coleman pick great time to break out
Published: Saturday, October 29, 2011

PHILADELPHIA ? Almost lost in the eagerness to clear out of town for the bye week was Kurt Coleman?s NFC defensive player of the week performance.

Benched for missing a tackle earlier in the season, the veteran Eagles safety bounced back with three interceptions and six tackles to spark the Eagles to a 20-13 victory over the Washington Redskins.

If Rex Grossman had stayed in the game, Coleman would have had a shot at establishing the NFL record. The standard is four, by several players.

Believe it or not, Coleman didn?t keep the game ball he got from the coaching staff. He gave it to breast cancer survivor Ron Coleman, his father.

?He?s coming up on six years,? Coleman said. ?This is the month for breast cancer awareness.?

The studious Coleman knows this is the week to be aware of Jason Witten, the 6-6, 265-pound tight end who tortures the Eagles.

Witten has 91 catches for 1,053 yards (11.6 ypr.) and seven scores in 16 career games versus the Eagles, including 53 grabs for 612 yards and five TDs in the past nine.

Stopping Witten Sunday night might not be possible. Tackling the big guy, who leads the Cowboys with 36 receptions, is a must.

?Every game that I?ve watched this year, no team has shut him out,? Coleman said. ?He does a great job of not only being very smart and understanding what the defense is trying to do against him. And even if you do have good coverage he?s able to use his big body frame and he has great hands. It?s tough. Really the best thing you can do is just limit the yards that he has when he does catch the ball. Try not to give up anything big.?
