scUMs loss, bad for us in the long run?

I, like everyone on this forum, loved watching App. State dominate the team up north...then cap it off by doing the unthingable and actually winning the game.

I do have a question though... ( and I'm not trying to disrespect Coach Tressel at all and I love our Buckeyes as much as anyone! )

With Carr's recent record with us and Bowls...Then suffering the worst loss in what might be sports history... I'm pretty sure this is Carr's final year coaching the gays in blue.

Is this a bad thing?

Think about it... Carr is there John Cooper ( again no disrespect, but it is what it is...) Carr, like Coach Coop, was able to win about 10 wins a season... but couldn't win the final reg. season game and couldn't win a Bowl game.

scUM is going to do the same thing we did when we said good-bye to Coach Coop and welcomed Coach Tessel. I have faith that Coach Tressel is the best "college" coach in the NCAA and his record is because of himself not for a horrible Coaching issue up North.

I still love the fact that scUM lost ( even though they made the BIG 10 look horrible... ) But scUM is going to bring in a MUCH more talented coaching staff VERY, VERY shortly...

I guess that just means...New ass to kick!

Worrying about the future success of some unknown coach strikes me as highly ridiculous. I don't mean to poo poo your thread here, but I could give a rats ass who Michigan replaces Carr with. Why? Because who they have on their sidelines means little when OSU has Tressel on theirs. There may well come a day when Tress can't get it done... but, I don't see that day coming soon.

Sure it's too early to truly worry about such things, but I've had similar thoughts. However, their next hire might not produce either.

Either way, there are many inherent flaws that I will miss in the next coaching staff & program (check your inbox tomorrow morn, bkb). Whether those changes translate into more frequent wins remains to be seen.

Well, looking at who replaces Llloyd may seem ridiculous, but hey......that is what this and many of the threads are all about. Many of the threads look at "What If" and are mostly exercises in mental masturbation, and people's opinions. To wit, the very successful Texas vs. OSU thread. The entire recruiting thread - very little fact mixed in with much fantasy........

This might be a v-bet, which can turn fantasy into reality (and make a bit of change in the bargain). My money is on Les Miles leaving LSU and 'going home'.

The problems facing tsun right now can only be fixed by recruiting. No matter the new coach next year they are 1-2 years away from being an elite team, at best.

Also like many have said and NoD is finding out, hiring the right guy isn't a 'gimmie. Whats NoD on now, their 4th coach since Holtz?

College head coaches need to:
1) Have the right personality to bring in top notch recruits
2) Be a leader to motivate a group of kids to stay out of trouble and bust ass all year long
3) Be creative enough to make in-game adjustments.

To have all three of these personality traits is extremely rare. Furthermore, it is nearly impossible to judge if an individual has these traits in an interview. Don't believe me? Then just look at Notre Dame. They have the largest fan base (and resource pool) of any NCAA team, but they have struggled mightily at finding a coach that can do all three of these items. Lou "Marble Mouth" Holtz might come closest. Jabba the Wies isn't getting it done, and Bob Davie was a train wreck. Ty seemed like he had potential, but ended up as a flop.

The point is, the Buckeyes got lucky. Andy Gieger hit two grand slam home runs (JT and Matta) and then stepped out on a high note. Just because our AD hooked us up with two winners, doesn't mean that Michigan's will do the same thing. The odds are they could struggle just like ND is currently doing. Wouldn't that be sweet??? This is a no-lose situation for the Buckeyes. Carr stays - fine by me. Carr leaves - bring on the fresh meat!!!

It's really pointless worrying about it from a conference perspective. Most of the blowhards on TV have a Statue of Liberty-sized hard-on for the SEC anyway, so Michigan losing doesn't really affect who people think the best conference is. The Pac 10, the Big XII, and the Big East take their lumps like we do in the media, so it really won't matter all that much. USC plays in what is often a joke of a conference (not every year, of course), and they still get, oh, at least a little media love, right?

As from the school perspective, I'm not worried. Earle did pretty well against Michigan, and Tressel has too...and it clearly wasn't Carr's genius that beat us in the 90's, because as soon as Tressel got their Carr is 1-for-his life against us. Thus, I don't think it matters who they get, as long as our guy can beat them, we'll get our share of wins.

bkb - gotcha. sorry about that. Whoever they get, (and I'd bet real cash against one of their assistants this time), we'll line up against them just like we do, and beat them off the line, just like we do, etc.

It will come about that 'the tables turn' as they did when we were on the bottom (with Coop), to the top (with Tress), and the cycle will start again. But the one poster was right, unless they come up with a superstar (like a Urban or a Saban), then they'll have to build, but it won't take long, Michigan does a good job of recruiting......

Very true. If OSU bounces back with a strong year and strong BCS win, the weak conference should not handcuff OSU moving forward... esp w/ the potential for resume wins like USC or Da U.

Honestly, I'd be much more concerned about their next hire if they had a hotshot coordinator chomping at the bit to get the job when L(asu)LLLLLoyd steps down. Imagine being part of that futility, then getting a chance to turn it around. After yesterday, I don't think DeBord or English are really in line for the job, nor do they fit the profile that would have me concerned.

Outside of Urban Meyer and (maybe) Pete Carroll, I can't think of anybody they could hire that would worry me. Now, if they hire some lesser known coach who starts making proclamations at halftime in Crisler arena, I might take notice.:)

I agree with what everyone said...

I guess I'm just trying to look at it as a "Non Homie"

As much as I hate'em... The job is definitly a job A LOT of people are going to want. ( I don't believe there is any backing to this at all....But I heard Jon Gruden's name tossed around. I know Jon hasn't been able to do much with Tampa since 2002 when Dungy's team was much younger...but he is a great football coach and even when he was in Oakland he said he'd love to coach on the college level. - I can't see this happening given what Tampa gave up for him in 2001... )

I would take JT over anyone in the country... But I also love a sure thing, and just as scUM loved when we had Cooper...I love that they have Carr...
