Seahawks (ex-USC) Coach Pete Carroll (official thread)

ScriptOhio;1639531; said:
With news of Seattle's pursuit of Carroll, minority candidates such as Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier were said to be reluctant to interview for the job as they do not want to be used as simply a Rooney Rule candidate rather than a legitimate candidate.
Report: Carroll, Seahawks agree on five-year deal - NFL News - FOX Sports on MSN

It seems like the Seahawks really screwed themselves with this one by allowing everything to leak so quickly. If I'm not mistaken, the minority interview rule at issue requires good faith interviewing of minority candidates. So, an organization doesn't satisfy the rule merely by conducting minority interviews. If it can be demonstrated that those interviews were mere pretext, the organization can still get in trouble. If I've ever heard of a situation in which minority interviews were held pretextually, it would be this one.

Feel bad for the players at the Army AA game who are considering USC.

The rug has completely been pulled out from them, and now they are put on the spot to declare.

I actually applaud PC, and the USC staff for the way this is being handled. They can't come right out and call the kid and say "yeah, we are out of here, best of luck", so really, not calling them back is the most honest thing they can probably do.

I haven't read or heard a single denial about this whole thing from PC or the staff. Compare that to Nick Satan, or any of the other scum bag coaches that jump jobs. Not saying anything sometimes says the most. When so many other coaches lie their asses off when they have one foot out the door its nice to see that at least they are not telling the kids everything is fine when its not.

I think ESPN's track record with this situations is pretty rough because they're so anxious and hard up to break the story that sometimes they'll leak something knowing it's not 100% true, to generate an even stronger rumor or influence, ride that wave, and then say later on..."hey we never said it to be 100% true". That's ESPN for ya.

Yeah, what was it right before RR Dear-John'd WV?
Absolutely, Positively, 110% FerShur, Pinky Swear: Les Miles is the next coach at tSUN? Remember, you heard it here first.

They'll be fined $250k. Most RR interviews are pretext, anyway.

Reports: Pete Carroll leaving USC for Seahawks - NFL - SI.com

From the AP.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Leiweke flew to California before firing Mora to interview Carroll. The newspaper said that Seattle -- owned by Microsoft Corp. tycoon Paul Allen -- is believed to be offering Carroll a five-year contract worth $7 million a season to be president and coach. That would be a raise of more than $2 million annually on what Carroll is thought to be earning at USC.

The strangest thing about this move is that it came out of nowhere...

...we know Pete's name comes up for a new job every year, but for it to happen and go through so fast is crazy, especially knowing that there isn't a real short-list for the replacement. Steve's out, and there's probably no way they pick up one of the floating heads that also just lost their job (i.e Mike Leach), so who do they go for?

On a side note, how odd of a fit is Tommy Tuberville at Texas Tech?

Mortensen said on ESPN radio that the discussions he had with Pete(that were few and far between) were wrapped around the fact that he would go to the NFL again if he could run the show. This coming from him running the entire program at USC. He said he would need all the same advantages he had at USC regarding bringing in players. So with Seattle's offer of President and coach it gives him more power to do what he wants. With all of it being handled on the west coast, we probably didn't hear the half of it. Add the NCAA allegations to all of this and he probably felt, as mentioned before, that he should get his money now because if he wanted he could miss out on a second chance.

I personally don't think he is good enough to win at the NFL level because talent disparity is so much greater in college. The NFL thrives on parity of their teams and to be honest USC has had better players than every team in the Pac 10 for what 8-10 years. He got his guys to play their best in certain games but the talent of players drove that program.

I think people are vastly overrating Carroll as a head coach. The guy was an incredible college coach because he was at a storied program in a desirable setting and his personality jived with your typical 17-22-year-old kid. In other words, he had a lot of success at USC because he was able to secure superior talent. That won't happen to anywhere near the same extent in the NFL. JMO.

I don't think anyone here is overrating him...

...I've always considered Pete to be an outstanding manager of talent, not an outstanding coach. That's evident by his losses over the past 7 years. When you consistently get the kind of talent USC has had, you don't lose to the Stanfords, Washingtons, and UCLA's of the world.

Great coaches at any level PRODUCE talent, not "handle" them.

I agree, when he first arrived he brought in some great talent, had very good coaches and they won a lot of games. Since the Leinart/Bush years they have the talent but not the coaching, the inexplicable losses to subpar teams says it all. I think this is probably a good thing for USC and if they can't get a good coach who does things the right way they'll be fine because the resources will always be there. I think that what we saw last season from the Trojans was PC losing control. His players didn't play hard for him.

Lets not forget that this isn't Carroll's first rodeo in the NFL. He has already had failures with the Jets (6-10) and the Pats. Seattle will not be the major market Carroll needs to propell himself and the team as a winner. He would have been better off pushing the Raider franchise into hiring a new HC, where he would be staying in an area that is well familar with him.

Now that its official, time to change the name of the thread...

Also, I like that unlike previous years, Carroll is NOT trying to get kids to stay in schools. Way to be classy Petey.
It's not "official" until there's a signed contract, and right now the word is only that terms have been agreed to. Hell, even after it's signed it's not necessarily official. See: Donovan, Billy- HC, Orlando Magic

That's why I said that I didn't feel his talents will be utilized well in the pros... past experience. Until Davis is gone, no one should try to be a coach in Oakland. Al can't keep his hands off. Pete and him wouldn't have worked well together. So you'd have a terrible owner GM/President/coach relationship with him not being successful in the league anyway. Seattle is not a good football market. Holmgren overachieved there.
