SF/PF J.D. Weatherspoon (transfer to Toledo)

I agree that JD could be a nice addition over the long run, maybe shorter if he grows a bit, or really works his tail off to turn his weaknesses into strengths. If it happens, having all year to improve, and knowing what he should improve on would be of great benefit to him. I thought Wallace could have turned into a very nice player, but he was not patient enough to find out, being far from home added to that I'm sure. If Thad does decide to go after JD, then I also agree it will be nice to see a hometown kid get a chance to play at tOSU.

I know what you mean about the way Thad uses the 4 player in his system but J.D. has another year to hone his skills and I think that he has enough athletic talent that he will be able to help us perhaps not right away but in his second year and down the road from that.

And I am not going to disagree with what you are saying about his potential...Just that some have struggled to reach it under Matta...

The potential is obviously there...that is just what kinda scares me...Just hope that he is able to reach that potential if he comes here...

Dispatch

Matta was at Northland High School speaking with Weatherspoon's counselors and collecting a copy of his academic transcript for Ohio State's admissions office to review, Northland coach Satch Sullinger said tonight. A scholarship offer could be forthcoming, and it would not be a surprise if Weatherspoon accepts it on the spot.

The 6-7 jumping jack, a high-school and AAU teammate of OSU commitment Jared Sullinger, rescinded his commitment to Xavier after coach Sean Miller left for Arizona a little more than two weeks ago. Since then, coaches from Wisconsin, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Ohio State, Ohio University and Ball State have been to Northland to do their due diligence on Weatherspoon, Satch Sullinger said.

"No one's offered," he said, "but they’re doing the process."

From the article linked above

Besides a rebounder like Weatherspoon or 6-10 Adreian Payne of Dayton Jefferson, Matta is looking for a pass-first point guard. Offers reportedly have been made to Cory Joseph of Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., and Phil Pressey of Dallas Episcopal School, son of former NBA player Paul Pressey.

This thread should be moved to the Main Recruiting Forum and we really should start a thread on Phil Pressey since he has expressed interest in Ohio State.

His transcripts are probably the only thing holding back the "official" offer. I am a little concerned about his perimeter shooting also but he has some time to work on it and I don't think he has to stray too far from the basket to be an effective player. His rebounding and defense will be his assets.

Obviously.......when evaluating a player..........strengths and weaknesses are determined and a staff makes a decision on the potential of that player in their system...........he has physical gifts that can't be taught.........his shooting and fundamentals can be improved if the player accepts the coaching.............

I don't think anyone who has seen him play thinks that an offer from Ohio State is out of the question...............

Ohio State's problem is that they haven't recruited guys like J.D. Who cares if he can't shoot right now....he's going to give you the athletic ability down low that Ohio State has been missing.

The reason is Matta's desire to have very skilled permiter players in his 4 out 1 in system............I don't know if Weatherspoon fits the system with his current skill set........

on the other hand........I agree his athletic ability is something we don't have enough of on the roster..............

I'd like to see an offer go out assuming he's qualified.

This is a player that can give us time at the four spot during his first few years, then as he develops his perimeter game can move to more of a three position.

You also can't teach his athleticism and speed.

I hear you on the 4-1 system, just not a fan and would like to see some things change.
