SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

do people really question his defensive "ability"?? its been obvious he has the ability i question his defensive "consistency" the kid flat our locks down one trip down the floor then fouls off the ball 30 feet from the hoop.

this kid oozes lottery pick. he can attack the rim (unless its an uncontested dunk) he can pull up, he can hit the 25 footer. hes shown me all of that. i have no doubts in his offensive game. i go back to his perceived slump beiing cook forcing his game in fewer minutes. only once (1/2) since the first of the year has he played 25 minutes. people question his offense, he has 12 double digit point games six 20 pt outbursts, he still shots over 51% from the floor, 47% from 3land while dragging down 5.5 boards a game.

like all these kids they can play. so people seem over critical or quickly willing to overpraise.

I totally agree and that is what your first sentence is basically what NBA defense is, look at LBJ. He might try and lock down during crunch time, but other than that he does not give 100% on the defensive end...

I guess my question is that Cook has played well at times, but why are his minutes going down in the past few games? I already know the answer and the problem is not on the offensive end of the court. :wink2:

Consistency would be a good word to describe his lack of defense or focus on the defensive end. I am not concerned about his possible draft position or his potential, I am focused on this season, the here and now, he is just not getting it done on the defensive end and he is not the only one right now on that team that is not playing solid, fundamental "team defense". Great offensive player no doubt. Great all around player, not there yet.

Some of you may disagree and that is fine, but I see the games and what I see is a player who is feeling the pressure a little bit when he enters the game to make an impact and it is effecting him.

this kid oozes lottery pick.

I agree with your comment, but the reality is that we need him to play like a lottery pick on a consistent basis. Chalk some of the struggles to being a freshman, that is obvious.

He might try and lock down during crunch time, but other than that he does not give 100% on the defensive end...

I would say that good sound defense is 70% effort and 30% desire. There is more to the college game than scoring. Good comment.

I agree. This Kid has all the offensive talents anyone would want. He is just a freshman , and they are notorius for not playing defense. They didn't in high school either. And that's why he will be around next year too.

I agree Junkie, I think that is the main reason that I believe he will leave as he just strikes you as one of those guys that is on and off and I am sure Matta gets on him all the time. That is how it works in the NBA with a 82 game schedule and 48 minute games, but college ball is all about heart and desire, and Matta is putting the guys on the court full time that have that in them...

Kind of reminds me of a Rudy Gay type where he never reached his potential in college b/c he didnt go hard all the time...

In the first fifteen games (up through Illinois), Cook was averaging 23.3 minutes, making 55.6% of his shots (including 51% from three), and scoring 15.5 points per game.

In the ten games since then, he is averaging 18.2 minutes, making just 36.5% of his shots (34.5% from three), and scoring only 7.1 points per game.

Give it up to stats man :)

Daequan is a liability on the defensive end and I feel that is why we're seeing fewer minutes out of him. Also, the level of competition in the first 15 games was nowhere near what it is now. Daequan, so far this year, has been like Alex Rodriquez. Alex feasts on bad pitching, and struggles with good pitching. Daequan feasts on bad defenses, and struggles with good ones.

Pretty much what my analysis would be. Perhaps a fatigue factor coming into play with the shooting percentage? If I remember correctly, all three of his missed three's on Saturday were on target, but came off the back of the iron. Not a lot of ugly-looking shoots off of the side of the iron, just not going down right now.

I don't follow the inside scoop on the hoops team much, but this thread was a recent post thread, so I decided to click on it. After reading through a few of the pages, I couldn't believe that some were talking about him leaving at the end of the year. There are statements that some think he will be a lottery pick. I find all of this baffling. Are these statements that he has made or just internet conjecture? I only ask because, although Cook has a ton of potential, he would probably go undrafted at this point and have to play in Europe for awhile to be NBA ready. That's a tough road to hoe just to make some quick cash.

I disagree about him going undrafted...I will agree that his stock has went down, but he will make a team very happy late in the first round if he goes, much like Josh Howard and the Mavericks...

As for him struggling, I don't think it has to do with the D as much as just being more physically tired than he has ever been in his life due to the strain of the college game...You can tell by his jumpers that he is missing...

he had a great game against UNC, although not sure they have a great defense.

the style of play then definately fit him well.

I think a better reason for the change in productivity was the change in our style of play with the addition of Oden.

Oh for sure a fast-paced game of run and gun is definitely better for Daequan, because of course the defense doesn't have time to get set
