SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

I really don't remember Rudy Gay disappearing during crunch time.

That was the knock on Rudy all last year is that he was too passive and never played to his ability...As for Marvin Williams he was the 6th man on that UNC team and he was drafted #2 in the NBA draft...

Maybe. Those are big time stats.I do not see him as a first-round pick if he comes out this year

Well we are going to have to agree to disagree on that one...IMO the NBA looks more at potential than they do stats and Cook has shown what he is capable of, even tho he isnt getting major minutes...Maybe he isnt in the top so many players in college basketball, but if put in the right situation he could be a very good player...

I kinda compare it to a WR recruit in high school, who has the all the tools, but his team just doesnt throw the ball that much so he doesnt have a lot of highlights and heavy stats, but everyone feels when he gets a guy to throw him the ball, he will succeed.

The most surprising thing to me is that no one ever mentions that during the games Cook looks to the sideline all the time. He obviously loves to play and wants to make a big difference and be a star and I doubt this year is going as he planned and I notice he looks to the scorers table all the time watching to see if he is coming out. He seems 10 times more likely to pick up fouls, or force a pass/shot when he sees Lewis or Butler coming in to take him out.

One of the most telling plays all year about Cook is when he got a steal and was on a fast break and went for a big dunk and hit the rim and the ball bounced off. The team came down and missed a shot and cook got a rebound and rather than passing the ball off to the point guard he drove and carried the ball. (pretty sure this was UT but they all run together it seems). This just shows his youth and desire to make a difference. Matta makes this worse by not letting him find a rhythm and taking him out after 5 minutes of playing time if he misses his first two shots or gets a foul.

I think if Matta started Cook it would make him so much more relaxed rather than feeling like every minute he is out there he has to make a difference. I definitely think this is a Matta and Cook issue as I have seen assistant coaches literally hold Cook on the floor when he was hot and Matta was trying to take him out of the game. I know Matta wants to be loyal to Lewis, but he should at least try starting Cook and letting him play 30 minutes, if he fouls out, who really cares since Matta isnt playing him the last 10 minutes of the games anyways. This kid is great and I just think if he was more relaxed and was having more fun rather than watching when he was coming out he would be the best scorer in the conference.

I am just not ready to get real excited, we have seen this b4, If Cook has a good tourney we go far and he has a couple big games his stock will skyrocket, and then the agents and money come calling...

Either way it is great news at the time, as I have been of the thinking that he would leave for sure, but this does give me a lot of hope and I think that the chances of him coming back are about 90-10, b4 hand I would of put it at aobut 70-30 for him leaving...

I feel the same as you. It's easy for him to say he'll be back now that's he's been in a slump. Will he be saying the same once he goes on a tear? Maybe but less likely.

Cook is projected as the #20 pick at this point.

It is interesting that the mock draft (per link above) has Greg Oden going to the Boston Celtics (#1 pick), since a lot of sportcasters have compared him to former Celtic great Bill Russell.

Also, it was nice to see Ron Lewis being projected as a late 2nd rounder. :)

his game is nearly identical to former FSU player and High School All-American Von Wafer...Wafer never really figured out how to play D and was drafted in the second by the Lakers.....Great offensive game, left after sophmore season...they really have similar offensive games too, same size, etc....Cook will be fine though, if he were on another team averaging 30 minutes hed be averaging 20 a game. If he does stay next year, he'll definately be a focal point

Cook's game (defense, shot selection, missed dunks) has been scrutinized thoroughly on BP, but I don't recall any comments/concerns about his rebounding. At the beginning of the year, rebounding was a team concern. "The Answer was coming" but the one who stood out even then was Cook. Seems like every time a missed shot entered into a contested area, Cook somehow managed to come out with it cleanly. For somone whose minutes are limited, 20 min. per game, he is highly proficient in rebounding, 5.1 per game, just slightly behind Oden 9.5 and Hunter @ 5.3 rpg, but far ahead of anyone else. He's more effective than we appreciate.

Cook played incredible defense last night. He hustles like mad on those boards and although he fouled out he played 32 minutes. His shot was a bit off, but he made a lot better decisions than normal and shut down whomever he was on. I liked the lineup Matta ran last night, 9 players playing equal time feels too much like communism, the fact is some people should only play 5-10 minutes a game, because there are just better people. Lighty will be great, but hes a Freshman and without driving lanes cant do much since he doesnt have an outside shot right now. Hunter works well in certain situations, but not when theres a zone like that and a bunch of speedy little guys taking 3's. I think the 5 guys on the court for 30+ minutes last night is how it should be every night.

"One and done" was not a label attached exclusively to Greg Oden when he chose to play his required year of college basketball at Ohio State. It came with Daequan Cook, too.
It took about two days of practice last fall for Cook to realize it didn?t fit.
"In the NBA, you?ve got to play defense sometimes," he said with a smile. "They don?t play defense all the time, but you?ve got to be able to play defense."
Cook has come a long way at that end of the floor, coach Thad Matta said, but he still has a ways to go. Whether that way leads him to the NBA after this season or keeps him at Ohio State for a second one remains uncertain, however, as the second-ranked Buckeyes approach their final home game, Sunday against No. 1 Wisconsin.

Daequan Cook weighs his future

By Kyle Nagel | Friday, February 23, 2007, 04:49 PM
Daequan Cook should not declare himself eligible for the NBA draft if he wants to contribute there right away.
Apparently, that?s what the OSU freshman guard from Dunbar High is saying, too. At the same time, like coaches usually do when talking about potential jobs, he?s leaving the door open.
I think right now there are too many players better than Cook for him to have immediate success in the NBA. Don?t get me wrong, he?s becoming a very good college player, and he averages 11.9 points per game (second best on the team).
