anyone know what the PS3 is projected to cost?
when PS2 first came out, it was 300 and this is way more powerful. i bet it will be a lot which sucks because it will be hard to get for people that dont have a ton of money. since the games have difference technology talked about on the link, do you think they will be costing more too?

I wouldn't be so glum in your predictions of cost.

They don't make money on these gaming units, the cash cow is the games themselves.

If they go up into the price range of a PC/Monitor then the gaming crowd and game developers walk across the street and get into real iron.

If the PS2 was ~$300 new, expect the PS3 to be at or near that price point.

I hope you're right. Some early predictions that I've seen are between $400-$500.

Teraflop - A teraflop is a measure of a computer's speed and can be expressed as:
Today's fastest parallel computing operations are capable of teraflop speeds. Scientists have begun to envision computers operating at petaflop speeds

It's also, very fast. Man, I love technology

Of course its a competitive market out there. XBox36 comes out with a few months lead-time to own the high performance spot. Reportedly their price point is $300.

The other part of the competition is the perceived and actual performance --
Currently - Perceived
The PS3 comes in at a combined 2 TeraFlops (0.2 Teraflop CPU, 1.8 TeraFlop GPU)
The XBox360 comes in at 1 TeraFlop measured using Sony's yardsticks of performance.
Future - Actual
We all would agree that specs on paper do not always = performance on screen. There is a good ign article that discusses M$ofts take on expected real-time performance. Their conclusion, in real-life, XBox360 may have the overall edge in computing power.

Back to price --
Getting PS3 adopters to avoid XBox360 is easier if the price points look close. $400 -- $500 is too much of a leap IMHO. So, whatever Sony leaks between now and XBox360 launch I take as trial balloons. The rubber meets the road when 360 hits the shelves with a real UPC and price point. If M$oft's leaks are validated at $300 then it really drives Sony toward the same benchmark.

Keep in mind what happened when PS2 came out with inferior hardware but had a big time jump on the Xbox... and that did not include an online interface which will be quite competitive (PS3's hardware will be better, but don't underestimate how much MS is going to invest and buy out to make an all inclusive experience... online/tivo/etc)

Another thing is that before E3, 360 seemed to have their act together much better than Sony did...

Plus a few of Sony's coveted titles like FF will now be for xbox...

And unlike back when Xbox was just an infant, it has developed a number of fantastic xbox only games that make it pretty hard to avoid buying an xbox even if you are a sony fan... and I expect that trend to continue when xbox360 makes all of us drool while waiting for the ps3.

Anyone know whether PS3 has a set release date? I had heard that MS is planning on coinciding the release of Halo3 with that date..

As far as Final Fantasy is concerned since 11 already is on computers it doesn't surprise me that it would be going over to XBox, however after that brief encounter with mmorpg I don't think there will be too many FF titles on the Xbox afterwards.
