Southern Bucks - Life Down South Questions

BuckBackHome

Wolverine is largest member of weasel family
This is an open question to any Bucks who live(d) in the south and what life there is like. I am considering pursuing some employment opportunities in a couple of southern states. I have spent little time down south (98% of it was on Bourbon Street), so I have no idea what life is like in say the Carolinas, Virginia or Florida, especially compared to the midwest.

Any thoughts as to quality of life, places to raise a family, cost of living, schools, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Quality of life, quite good
Places to raise a family, Most are good.
Cost of living, pretty low. At least as low as Northwestern Ohio
Schools, You had to ask didn't you? Some are quite good. Many are very poor.
You will need to be very choosy. Grad21 will confirm I'm sure. Anything else? Just ask away. Oh, I'm about 5 miles from Myrtle Beach so you'll have a point of reference.

Two months now in Dadeland, wife works in Coral Gables and actually drives through the U of M campus every day to work. W e love it but I would suggest doing some research and a weeks visit where you think you might like to go. As my coworkers say they never met a yankee like me.

Agree with everything here...just do your research on the schools in your area. Many times, the schools are fine...but test scores are horrid for other uncontrollable circumstances.

How do y'all put up with the heat down there? I started sweating as soon as I walked outside Tues-Thurs last week. My sunglasses fogged up as soon as I opened the door. And I thought it was hot in Ohio recently.

Last week was not normal....
That's good. Do you know how hard it is to eat at a seafood buffet with a broken AC? I filled up half of my stomach on sweet tea. Now that is one of the best things about the south, even though my waitress would probably disagree.
My gf liked that they had Yuengling on tap most places. Her parents make special trips to PA to buy that stuff.

Depends where in the south I would imagine. I have spent a lot of time in NC over the past 5 years, and the Triangle area (I love saying that) is very nice. Raleigh/Durham is a very progressive area. There is a lot of growth, good schools and money. There are a lot of transplants in the area so you never feel like an outsider, and the people there are very friendly anyways. With 2 really good colleges (NC, Duke) and one OK one (NC State) you get a lot of the nice benefits that being in an academic area bring. Good Restaurants, nightlife, etc. I would not hesitate to go there if I was forced to relocate.

I went to school at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, Sc. There area was great. It was only 15-20 minutes from Charlotte.
I've never lived in a more friendly area. Honestly it took a little getting used to.

One thing I could never understand was how people could get so excited for mediocre football (USC, Clemson)

The housing market is out of control in Florida... homes are WAY over priced. It's a nice to place raise a fmaily unless you live near Tampa. Three little girls murdered in the last 6 months and numerous attempted kidnappings. Schools seem to be OK... I don't have too much info on them but my 3 year olds start in the fall. The quality of living is great. One of the worst things about Florida is the time when the snowbirds are back... the people and traffic are horrible. I've been here almost a year so we are still getting settled.

If you're looking for suburbia, it's here. Many places outside of Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, etc. are like the suburban Midwest with more space, lower prices, less snow and much more heat. Something really urban, in the Chicago/NY sense of the word is much harder to find. I grew up in Atlanta and have been in school on the west coast and at tOSU, but keep coming back here. Other than lack of proximity to a decent beach, the ATL has a lot going for it. I also really like Charlotte and the NC Triangle-area.

I've been a road whore most of my life and have lived or spent long periods of time all over the good ole US of A.

You could pick my subdivision up and drop it anywhere and it would fit in.

I will say it is hotter than hell here in the summer and far more kids have to go to private schools to get a good education as opposed to Ohio or Michigan. Cost of living is lower, in some places, but like anything else you get what you pay for.

The south is as varied as you would expect with Tejas having almost nothing in common with South Carolina save for warmer weather, a slight accent and some beach front property.

If someone told me I had to relocate the only place I think I would move would be Austin or some city close to that size.

I spent last week in Atlanta and enjoyed their cooler, drier weather with a much different topography. I lived there long ago but it is really gotten huge. Nashville is nice as are many of the NC and SC cities. Florida used to be my choice of home but as LoKy mentioned housing costs are nuts. If you are not a retiree or hispanic you may feel strange in FLA.

I drive back from Ohio each deer season and Kentucky has the same weather. I usually start to notice the difference about Nashville as the temperatures are warmer, there is less or no snow and the roads and cars are in better shape.

Home is where you make it. I know some come here and wish it was more like where they had come from. I have met some folks from Columbus that have just moved down here and he does not like it. I think he hasn't given it a chance but he has to figure that one out for himself.
