BSH: "You are playing for the national championship which is awarded by two polls plus computers, NOT just one A.P. poll!!"

LSU and USC are co-National Champs. This has been going on since the dawn of time. I don't know why you're having such a problem with this in 2004. The computers have NOTHING to do with crowning a National Champ. The computers determine who plays in the BCS Title game, and that's it. You can shut em off from once the teams are determined.

"Any coach on this planet wants to win the national championship. Not the A.P. title, not the coaches poll title"

Dude, the AP and Coaches Polls ARE THE NATIONAL TITLES!! You're getting confused. There's no playoff (if you didn't know) in College Football. There's no Super Bowl matching the winner of the AFC and NFC at the end. The National Champ is given to the team (or teams) that finish # 1 in one (or both) of the major polls.

"See what they always talk about - the BCS nat'l champ. You won't find one ad running talking about winning the AP title.... for a reason."

First off, you're rambling on a tangent. The BCS Title game is promoted on TV to get RATINGS!! The AP poll and the coaches poll carry the same weight each and every year. That's why there are TWO polls.

The winner of the BCS game is awarded .... drum roll ... THE GUARANTEED # 1 FINISH IN THE COACHES POLL!! How come they never mention the Coaches' poll by name, by your rationale???

I'll tell you what I am shooting for: the Orange Bowl. Why? Because it is the only chance to gain a unified title. If the coach's poll wasn't owned by a Disney contract, USC would've finished #1 in both polls. Former BCS commish Mike Tranghese said it himself: The purpose of the BCS is to match the top two BCS teams in a bowl. It is advertised as a system that eliminates split titles, but really it only makes it more likely that there will be a unified title.
I'm rooting for the Orange Bowl too! why? because it is the BCS national title game this year!

1. Split champs have been going on since the dawn to time PRE BCS!!! After the BCS was introduced that was the end of that. The BCS is the ONLY national champion. Why you can't see this I don't understand. btw- the computers have a lot to do w/ crowning the champ - they help determine who is IN the national championship game... e.g. lsu vs oklahoma last year.

2. lol. Nope not confused, but I believe you are. The AP & Coaches Poll are PART OF the BCS national championship. The national champ is NOT awarded to the winner of the polls, it is awarded to the winner of the BCS Title game. That is why they play the damn game!

3. talk about a tangent.... lol. Until you accept that there is a BCS National Champion and the two polls are PART of that... you will never understand. Why is everyone shooting for the Orange Bowl this year? The Sugar last year. The Fiesta the year before that? Because it is the BCS FREAKIN NATIONAL TITLE GAME!! hellloooooooo BUELLER BUELLER.

WHAT!!???? Are you telling me that there weren't co-National Champs last year?? So every publication, journal, record book, TV show, and media outlet was wrong???

Did it completely escape you that USC won a share of the National Championship last year??

What did they win a share of? The BCS National Championship? ahhhh.. NO! There is only ONE national champion. That was LSU. IN FACT - USC didn't even play IN the title game.. Oklahoma did.

Until you can convince me you are playing each year to win the AP Poll.... you have no case. Each team is playing to win the BCS title.

Who is your team? OSU? IF so, you can answer it for yourself - what bowl game do you want them to win next year? I'll answer it for you - the ORANGE BOWL. Why? Because it pits # 1 vs # 2 to decide the BCS NATIONAL CHAMPION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BSH: "Until you can convince me you are playing each year to win the AP Poll.... you have no case. Each team is playing to win the BCS title."

Dude, I'm not arguing BSH fantasy anymore. This is the equivalent of the Miami fans saying last year that "Oh, every source, record book, and publication recognizes OSU as the National Champion, but since Terry Porter screwed us, then WE are Back to Back Champs!"

In BuckStopsHere fantasy, there is one National Champion in 2003. But, IN REALITY, there are co-National Champs, LSU AND USC. I'm not arguing anymore, imagine what you like.

Dude, going into the BCS Bowl game, USC was # 1 IN BOTH POLLS!! BOTH!! There was no "# 1 vs. # 2" last year!! # 1 was playing in the f'n Rose Bowl against # 4!!! And # 1 didn't lose!! They dropped in the Coaches' Poll because of contractual obligations from the coaches poll to the BCS.

And if I had to pick my Bowl for OSU, I'd pick the Orange. But, BUT!! If we lost a game over the course of the year, I'd gladfully take the Rose with a shot a share of the National Championship. The National Championship, co or alone, is the goal!! Not the Bowl game!! There is no playoff in CFB!!

Do you understand any of this???

Uh. not even close to the same. Comparing a team that thinks they lost on a bad call versus a team that won the BCS?!??! sorry...doesn't hold water.

The funny part is, you refuse to accept reality. The is only ONE BCS National Champion - LSU. To deny this makes me laugh. It is in the "books".

"Who is your team? OSU? IF so, you can answer it for yourself - what bowl game do you want them to win next year? I'll answer it for you - the ORANGE BOWL. Why? Because it pits # 1 vs # 2 to decide the BCS NATIONAL CHAMPION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Again, they use those polls to determine who plays in the BCS title game, NOT who IS the BCS champ. (+ computers). That game is where the champ is determined. How you can assert USC as the champ when they didn't even play in the title game is absurd. You are starting to sound like a USC apologist..... ick.

Dude dude dude. IF we lost I would gladly hope we got into the Rose Bowl as well. But our shot at the title is GONE if we are in the Rose. GONE. ADIOS. BYE. WE WON'T BE CHAMPS if we are in the Rose Bowl. You can't win the championship if you don't play in the f'in title game!!!!!!!!!!!! sheeesh.

Do you understand any of this???

Every number one team from the year before is at least slightly over rated. I was'nt impressed by their showing vs. Tech. They have a great QB in ML, if you can stop their awesome running game, and keep an eye out for Bush as a reciever, then I believe you have a shot at beating them. Their defense is susspect, if the VA Tech QB, had hit a few more passes, to wide open WR's, they (VT) would of put alot more pressure on The Profilatic's, resulting in what would of been a much closer game.

Yes BSH, but the "title" game is only for one champion, that of the BCS and the coaches' poll. The AP poll, which has always awarded a NT that counted just as much as that poll, is the other. If we (or anyone) wins the AP title, I expect they'll count it as a shared NT and won't bow in deference to a concocted formula set up to generate money, not determine a champion. Penn State got screwed out of a shot at a title in 94, and everyone screamed. Nebraska got a share handed to them on a platter in 97 by the coaches that they didn't deserve (AFTER screwing Penn State out of 1994) and everyone screamed louder. Nebraska AGAIN played for the title in 2001 without even winning their DIVISION, let alone conference, and everyone screamed "never again". Then USC finished atop BOTH polls at the end of last season, and did not qualify for the "title" game somehow. So they'll change it again.

My point is that no matter how many times they change it, these things will keep happening, so if USC won half the title, they won half the title. I don't if ABC tells me otherwise...if you don't believe in the system (which really no one does) then it can't be a valid detrminant of the national champion, especially if the older poll (AP) says otherwise.

First off, these championships are all mythical. It is disingenuous to believe that "the AP isn't a real NC because nobody is shooting for it". Even before the BCS, teams weren't shooting for just one title or another, it just happened that way. In 1954, OSU wasn't shooting for the AP title exclusively and ucla wasn't shooting for the UPI exclusively. It just happened that way, but it doesn't diminish the significance of the AP.

The AP is an established championship. The Coach's poll is an established championship. The BCS is an enigma. Every year, the BCS formula used is the one that would have worked last year. The one we have now was appropriate for 2003, but probably not now. It is difficult to put much stock in the BCS beyond its ability as a selector for the 1v2 BCS game. Its formula changes every year. The NCAA doesn't select any NC, it only lists the NC chosen by different sources.
