The movie was good and advanced the saga outside of the lucas box. Acting was very good.
Sure there were some moments that I didn't see coming. But after thinking about it those moments make sense when you think about the story being told.

Overall, not as good as Rogue One, but curb stomps The Force Awakens

For me, it just reaffirmed that Rogue One is the best Star Wars film ever made.

I avoided all spoilers and news about the production, so I did not know anything about the cast. Benicio Del Toro plays a very Benicio Del Toro eccentric that took me out of the movie somewhat. Like when he showed up in the MCU as The Collector. Laura Dern also seemed an odd choice, but she went out like a motherfucking boss! That sequence was amazing.

Rogue One put the best of everything together. Agree 1000% about your spoiler.

after reading a lot of comments and fan reviews today I've come to this conclusion...the people saying they didn't like the movie are basically complaining because the movie didn't plot along the course THEY wanted it to go. No real complaints about acting or directing..just belly aching because none of the fan theories played a role. For that, I say Bravo, Disney.

I have plenty of complaints. The plot was absolutely stupid. Half of the story lines turned out to be pointless in the end. I have no issues with the acting or directing, but the writing reminded me of the fucking Walking Dead if that says anything.

I think a lot of it is a lot things they hinted at towards in TFA, was just thrown away in this movie. Also, there were too many jokes, took me out of the moment at times.

I think most people agree the acting was pretty good, but most complaints are about the directing. The plot just didn't make sense at time (and timeline), and some scenes were just outright strange

Terrific installment, breathing fresh life into what could have become a very predictable reboot.

I need to see this a few more times to rate it properly. Rogue one is the purest Star Wars film, but this is certainly in the running.

The acting is terrific and full of strong performances (whereas the first 6 were mediocre to trash from large portions of the cast).
The humor is biting (vs woeful in prequels, very limited in IV-VI outside of Harrison Ford)
The visual design and cinematography has some really special moments, particularly at the end.

I honestly don't understand the complaints about the plot. It's rather hard to discuss this without spoiling things, so we'll table that for a bit, but I think people are confusing complexity with disorder.

Rey's trip downstairs left a lot to be desired. That is a complex situation to represent but it seemed to end rather abruptly for such a major moment.

Flying Leia was a bit rough

I walked out of the movie theater 40 minutes ago.

"There was like 2 hours of talking, maybe 30 minutes of action, I couldn't believe it!"

"I was expecting them to wrap it up, but then they left a cliffhanger? C'mon!"

(during previews)

"OMG, that looks amazing" (going back to overrun Jurassic World with an erupting volcano)



Yeah, I have zero questions about why people didn't appreciate this movie.

Movie was over at 1:30 ....

Never said this about ANY SW film, including the prequels (which I admit weren't great but, hey...whatevs) FUUUUUUUCK this movie.
I feel like I would have been better served rolling the $20 in a tight little ball and shoving it directly up my ass.

A lot of romanticizing about the original trilogy is now 40+ year olds that remember the movies as kids -- and that's OK. I went back for a second screening of Last Jedi last night, this time with the whole family, and my kids loved it. They were raving about the porgs and playing pretend Jedi all night until bedtime. They liked Last Jedi a lot more than Force Awakens.

My nine year old daughter is the big Star Wars nut, and she wanted to watch Phantom Menace again two nights ago, largely because she thinks Jar Jar is hilarious, and she likes the fact a main character is a child. So yeah, I think all of us are guilty of forgetting these films are made for fans of all ages, and there's a little fan service thrown in to massage every demographic. Last Jedi hits all those notes better than most.

I enjoyed the movie more on the second viewing.

As far as the big fan complaint:

I'm not as concerned about the lack of depth or backstory given Snoke in Ep VIII now. I have a feeling this sets up for a Rogue One-like standalone in 2020 that can fit between Trilogy II and Trilogy III. An Episode 6.5 to Rogue One's Episode 3.5.

Going back to my childhood, there wasn't much exposition on the Emperor in the Original Trilogy. That didn't hinder my enjoyment of the franchise in the early 80s.

I can't like this post enough. Rian Johnson made a film and advanced the story beyond the box people can wrap their short attention spans around.
This is not a mind numbing blow stuff up action movie. I think the connections throughout the movie have gone way over a lot of heads.
