Game Thread THE GAME: #1 Ohio State 42, #2 Michigan 39 (11/18/06)

In answer to a poster's rant about SSI getting the 26-119 rankings wrong, Stewart Mandel says that he a team of monkeys actually do those rankings for his column http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/stewart_mandel/10/18/mandel.bag/2.html

I have sent the following post to his mailbag. We'll see if it gets posted:

Sorry, Stew, but passing off the 26-119 ranking errors onto those poor monkeys is not acceptable. Monkeys have a right to dignity just like anyone else and hold respectable positions in society. For instance, the University of Michigan has employed one as a head coach for years.

In answer to the questions, I really did post that. It will be a scream if he posts it.

This has been posted on BN, and elsewhere here on BP. It is not confirmed by anyone with credentials from TSUN.

With most college football observers anticipating a Nov. 18 matchup of No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Michigan, Penn State defensive end Tim Shaw is willing to provide a scouting report. "In my opinion, I would say Michigan is better than Ohio State or Notre Dame," Shaw told the Centre Daily Times. "I think Michigan's offense is better than Ohio State's and their defense compares with Ohio State's."

I have to say that I think these comments are actually pretty positive for the Buckeyes. My layman opinion of our two teams is that scUM may have the edge on defense, and that we have the edge on offense. If our defense 3-4 weeks ago is as good as scUMs defense is now, I think we are in fantanstic shape (I feel like, while their D may be better right now, our D is improving more than they are, mostly due to our youth gaining experience). Our offense played PSU in quite a bit of rain - scUMs O was playing in pretty decent conditions. I think we have more weapons that they do on O (namely Beanie > Grady, Gonzo > Arrington, and of course TS > Henne). If our D=scUMs D, I feel great about our chances.

RUMBLINGS

All the rumors that have been flying about the Ohio State-Michigan football game being moved to night for television purposes are just that ? rumors.
Although it seems logical that the network would like to have a potential No.1 vs. No. 2 matchup in prime time, a school official said ABC never asked and Ohio State wouldn?t have agreed to it. School officials had already made one concession to the network by moving the kickoff to 3:30 p.m. The game has been played at 1 p.m. two of the past three years, but before that, the game was traditionally played just after noon.
Ohio State officials turned down ABC?s request to move the Penn State home game to night, citing the night games at Texas and Iowa that the Buckeyes already had on the schedule. As it stands now, ABC plans to have California at Southern California as its night game Nov. 18. In the Associated Press poll this week, USC is No. 3 and Cal No. 11.

I can't get in to see what the actual messages are (they what you to buy a subscription) but there seems to be something out there. Tell I hear an official work from the weasels themselves I am not going to believe it and treat it as a rumor.

That's my philosophy. Besides, it doesn't matter much at this point if the whole team is injured. I'll wait until November 12 or 13 to start being interested in who is injured for the bad guys.

The skeptic in me is expecting Lloyd to claim injuries to Manningham, Hart, maybe Henne, half of their defense, and a couple of other guys. Then, just before kick-off on November 18, he trots all of them out onto the field. Turns out, none of them was ever hurt. He was just trying to trick Ohio State into thinking they might be able to sleep-walk through the game.

4. Time for some prognosticating. With the Big Ten holding the top two spots in the country with Ohio State at No. 1 and Michigan at No. 2 right now, will the Buckeyes-Wolverines matchup on Nov. 18 still be a contest for the nation's top spot? Also, with the way the BCS goes, is there any way the loser of that game could still play the other in the national title game?
Cowley: I think a one-loss team could play in the BCS title game this season if that one-loss team is Ohio State, Michigan, Texas or USC. I don't see a team like West Virginia, which will probably go undefeated this season, getting the nod over one of these four teams if they're one-game losers. As for looking ahead to the Buckeyes-Wolverines on Nov. 18, let's look at the teams' schedules. To get to Nov. 18 undefeated Michigan has to beat Iowa, Northwestern and Ball State (all at home), and Indiana on the road. I don't see any of those teams beating the Wolverines. As for Ohio State, the Buckeyes play Indiana and Minnesota at home, and Illinois and Northwestern on the road. None of those teams should beat Ohio State. So, barring a monumental upset, the showdown between Ohio State and Michigan on Nov. 18 should be a classic No. 1 vs. No. 2 and one of the best regular-season games in recent memory. Here's hoping neither team screws up before then.
Judd: With the exception of Michigan's game against Iowa on Saturday, both squads have easier-than-beating-Duke-in-football schedules all the way up until Nov. 18. I see the Buckeyes pulling out a close home win that day, but because of the BCS, the two will meet up again for the national title. Though there will likely be one or two other one-loss teams right behind Michigan, I think the BCS, seeing the possibility for a classic back-to-back matchup, will somehow opt (will its magical computer system) to keep the Wolverines in the second spot in the BCS standings, setting up a rematch.

Michigan better be careful with Iowa tomorrow, I'm thinking that the Hawkeyes are going to make this one a very tight ballgame. Iowa has nothing to lose, and Michigan has everything to lose..........especially with Mario Manningham out, and possilby Hart.

Uh, the reason they moved from noon to 3:30 was so that it would be the main nationally game (which was stupid in the first place because it was the main game when it was a noon game anyway).
of course it was the main game at 12n but that means less viewers, the west coast is still asleep.. at 3:30 all the sudden its much more viewable over in cali etc.

What does OSU have against playing at night? It would seem that more viewers could only help. A) more money, and B) more national exposure for the university.
C) more drinking, bad behavior, and burning couches.. we are already in the national spotlight.. we're number 1 and maybe playing number 2 at that point.. no reason for bad attention
