Game Thread THE GAME: Ohio State 14, TSUN 3 (final)

Pain is the name of their game
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer
11/15/2007

COLUMBUS -- In this era of no pause button, when the bye week has been replaced with the likes of Youngstown State and Appalachian State, perhaps no one feels the pain of a 12-week, nonstop season quite like running backs.

Mike Hart's right ankle hasn't been healthy since he sprained it Oct. 13 against Purdue. He has missed three of the last four games since, sabotaging a season that had Heisman potential after he had rushed for 976 yards and 10 touchdowns through Michigan's first six games.

Despite missing all that time, Hart's 215 carries are still tied with Beanie Wells for third-most in the Big Ten, three behind leader Rashard Mendenhall.

Wells' left ankle hasn't been right all season. He was held out for most of spring practice after a teammate rolled on it, then was limited in fall camp as well. Early in the season, Jim Tressel said Wells was going to have to be a ''warrior'' and fight through the pain, which he has.

''He's in pain,'' Tressel said this week. ''There's no question about it.''

Hart's words remembered 12 months later
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer
11/15/2007

COLUMBUS -- Michigan tailback Mike Hart rarely holds back his opinions, particularly when they pertain to Ohio State.

Following last year's 42-39 Ohio State victory, Hart guaranteed ''it would be a whole different game'' if Michigan got the chance to play the Buckeyes again for the national championship.

That never happened, but time didn't change his opinions much. During the Big Ten kickoff luncheon in August, Hart said ''We definitely would have beaten the Buckeyes (in the national championship game) ... There's no doubt in my mind we would've beat the Buckeyes.''

Now, 12 months later, Hart gets his chance.

Given his previous thoughts, Hart hasn't been made available to the media since before Michigan's game last week against Wisconsin. None of the Ohio State players made available this week would take the bait and get into a verbal war with Hart.

OSU notebook: Title bid possible, Bruce believes

Thursday, November 15, 2007 3:57 AM
By Tim May and Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce was asked this week whether he was feeling nostalgic, with the winner of the Michigan game Saturday becoming the Big Ten champion and having a guaranteed spot in the Rose Bowl -- just like the good old days. "Truthfully, I'd rather see (the Buckeyes) in the national championship game, because that means so much more," Bruce said. "And I want to tell you something, fellows, it can happen, just as sure as I'm standing here. Remember who said it, because it's gonna happen, I think."

Talk, talk, talk. They talk about his talk. Did Mike Hart really say this? Did he really mean that? Michigan would win a rematch with Ohio State? Michigan will beat Notre Dame, guaranteed? Michigan State is Michigan's "little brother"? Talk, talk, talk. They talk about his talk.
And that's just what he wants.

PREDICTIONS: NFL Michigan alums make their U-M-OSU picks; Woodson: I hate the Buckeyes

November 15, 2007
BY JON MACHOTA AND ERIC HABERMAS
FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITERS
We asked some Michigan alums in the NFL about Saturday's showdown between Michigan and Ohio State.

Green Bay Packers CB Charles Woodson

What is your favorite memory of the rivalry? ?My punt return against them in the (my) last year (1997) and the roses in the mouths after the game, knowing that we were going to the Rose Bowl.?

What does the rivalry mean to you? ?It?s the biggest rivalry in college sports, I believe. It?s the biggest game of the year for us. It?s always the last game of the year. A lot of times that game determines who goes to the Rose Bowl.?

What do you dislike about Ohio State? ?I just don?t like them. It isn?t just one particular thing. That?s the team that you?re supposed to hate and guess what? You hate them.?

Jacksonville Jaguars OL Maurice Williams

?I think Michigan will fare well. They know this game is for the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten Championship and that is what you play for at Michigan. ... It?s going to come down to the fourth quarter so I pick the Wolverines (to win) 23-16. (Chad) Henne and (Mike) Hart are going to have good games. Also my boy Manny (Mario Manningham) is going to have a good game. They know this is riding on the season and this game determines what type of season they will have so I think they will do well.?

Arizona DL Gabe Watson:

What do you hate most about Ohio State? ?I grew up in Michigan, so I always hated Ohio State. They?re a good team and they?ve got a good coach, Jim Tressel. You can?t say too many things bad about them. But you grow up in Michigan, and it?s automatic that you have to hate them. All Ohio schools, not just Ohio State. Just that they were Ohio State. And the Ohio State. I don?t know where that stuff comes from.?

What?s your take and prediction for the Ohio State game? ?It?s going to be a close game. Both teams are playing good defense right now. Both offenses can get things started. The team with the ball last will win the game.?

Arizona WR Steve Breaston

What?s your take and prediction for the Ohio State game? ?We?re going win, that?s all I know.?

What do you hate most about Ohio State? ?I can?t really say. There?s a lot out there.?

Arizona DT Alan Branch

What?s your take and prediction for the Ohio State game? ?I don?t want to make any predictions. I don?t like to make predictions. We?ll see.

What do you hate most about Ohio State? ?That they beat me every year I was there.?

Winner winner chicken parm dinner. This is the reason I love this rivalry so much. I can honestly say I hate Ohio State, but much like Wes Mantooth in Anchorman, "God damn do I respect you". You run a (mostly) clean program, don't do much chirping off the field, win games, make our conference look good and give us a war every year. I hate Notre Dame because when they think they're going 11-1, it's delusional and I don't believe it. When Ohio State says they're going 11-1, well dammit, you're probably right. You guys have a hell of a program and I really can't say many bad things about you, so here's to a hell of a game on Saturday!

But...

:oh::io: sucks!

I think it is a sign of a great rivalry that both sides can hate each other but repect each other. It is clear as much and Woody and Bo hated the schools they respected each other and were good friends.

BTW I love Hart's comment about he would rather lose to Appy state than OSU. I believe that pretty much puts the rivalry in a nutshell right there.

But...

It is currently 9:51 and tsun still sucks
