Students Maced At Block Party On Ohio State Campus

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Two police officers suffered minor injuries early Sunday while attempting to break up a large block party on The Ohio State University campus.

Police said the block party on Woodruff Avenue got out of control after midnight, 10TV News reported.

When officers told partiers to clear the streets, they said some refused to cooperate and began throwing bottles. Officers used Mace to control the crowd and get people to disperse.

At least one student was arrested. Two officers suffered cuts and bruises in the incident.

Personally I don't buy the Columbus PD's version of the story. Just my experience with them from my time down there I'm much more inclined to believe the students version of the events (as you can read in the comment section). Of course the university would never side with a "bunch of punk kids" over the "cities finest" so this will soon become a non-story.

You can see some things being thrown in this one...unfortuante situation all around. Especially disappointing that there was not a single burning couch. Rookies.

(1) When you see the wagon with flashing lights, it's time to get inside and call it a night. Or...
(2) You can throw beer bottles, get douched with pepper spray and complain about it on the internet.

Armed cops say, "Step back", you step the fuck back...period. I don't care if you're in the right, it's not worth getting doused with pepper spray and getting rubber cap busted in your ass. If you're stupid enough to launch projectiles at a group of policeman, then you're due the Rodney King treatment...

For one I didn't make out any warnings to leave the area. Surely they have a loud speaker that we could have made out? The place was jam packed...not exactly a lot of places for the students who happened to be down in the area of the street to be able to get out quickly enough to avoid being caught in the middle of the spray down. Their were thousands of kids there and I saw 3 beer cans flying in the air on the video (all from a significant distance from the street). Their were a few idiots yes, most of the people were just standing around minding their own business

I'm no expert in police tactics..but to me it seems like driving right into the middle of a crowd of thousands of people and THEN turning on your lights and busting out pepper spray on everyone isn't exactly the most clever way to deal with the situation. It's not like the students had the cops surrounded and they had to beat them back, they drove right through the middle of them and then tried to deal with the problem. How about focusing on clearing the street from end to end? It might take a little longer but you are much less likely to catch a bunch of innocents in the cross fire, it's not like their appeared to be any immediate danger with fires or anything like that where they needed to clear the streets immediately. I mean these guys are supposed to be professionals, certainly this isn't the first large crowd they've came across.

If you're going only by what's on the video, then you don't know what happened beforehand. You mention "clearing the street"...looks like that's what they were initially trying to do but the students said, "Fuck it, we ain't moving". So, the cops went, "Wanna bet?"

Looks like they voluntarily made room for the police cruiser to make it down the street in a relatively quick manner. Again when you have a massive crowd it takes time..doesn't look like the Police were interested in allotting that time. Nor did they seem that interested in making their intentions known, perhaps it should have been clear for the students to stay off the street but without a cop over a loud speaker telling them to get off of the street..it doesn't exactly become clear that the cruiser is there for that purpose (they may have been responding to an incident within the party for instance). It just doesn't seem that intelligent from a student OR officer safety perspective to have them drive into the middle of a thousand+ people and then start busting out pepper spray on everyone within reach.

I agree with JBaney, seems a bit premature to douse kids with pepper spray. Most of them were NOT doing a damn thing wrong. Just because there's a bunch of kids all in once place gives them the right to do that? IMO that's ludicrous. Thank god I don't live on Woodruff anymore, but if I was there and I got hit with pepper spray because of cops doing that for no reason, they'd be hearing from me.

Rookies indeed. I was on campus back in '79 when we beat Michigan and took over High Street. A car was set on fire and the drunken crowd tried to push it into Papa Joes. Cops finally came back in numbers with riot gear and over 700 arrests were made that night....
