Things to see in Washington D.C.

Going to D.C. over Labor Day weekend:
I have a tour of the White House, Library of Congress and the Congressional Building scheduled.
Other than the obvious, Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln, Jefferson and Holocaust Memorials, does anyone have any suggestions on what to see, places to eat/drink?

Looking forward to a great trip.

I've been to DC a lot. Although its not one of the free museums the Spy Museum is cool. You will also find some cool stuff in the (believe it or not) Postal Museum, and skip all the smithosonian cafe's if your looking for something quick, walk over to one of the congressional or senate buildings cafeteria's, they have way better food. Definitely make the time to see the FDR memorial, its pretty impressive and try to take a tour of the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. I love the Supreme Court as well, but with your limited time there I would map it out so you don't miss anything near by.

1. show in town is the Fri. night parade at the Hqtrs Marine Corp at 8th and I streets. Tickets are free and hard to get so try to get them online before you leave. Believe me you won't regret going to see it.

Ray's Hell Burger has the best burger I've ever eaten. Apparently it's really popular now because Obama went there or something, but I just found it through Yelp on my phone and I thought it was great without knowing that the Prez had made an appearance there.

It's an easy train ride from Arlington National Cemetery.

When it comes to taking trips, I'm kind of an organizational freak, I'll definitely have everything mapped out. We'll have about 5 whole days to check everything out, so hopefully we'll get so see a good majority of the things we'd like to see.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

(Bucky Katt) Rosie's house of pleasure (Bucky Katt)

If I were a regular visitor to houses providing such services, which I'm not, I would certainly not recommend Rosie's. If I had visited Rosie's upon my last trip to DC, which I didn't, I would most likely have been taken with a nasty case of some sort of itchy infestation, which I didn't, so I don't go there anymore, not that I ever did. If I did attend such houses of ill-repute, I would recommend Polly's Passion Pit, just around the corner from Rosie's.

DC is a cool place, very different vibe than other cities. Cool things to see-

Smithsonian-Air and Space, American History are can't miss, Natural History is very cool

Ford's Theater-right up the street from the Smithsonian, arrange an FBI tour as well very cool, and in the same neighborhood as Ford's/the Mall/Smithsonian

Arlington-do not miss the Iraq War Artist's Memorial-icon like paintings/drawings/etchings of fallen veterans in dozens of different styles but the same 8x10 inch canvas-incredibly moving

Food-Bullfeather's on Capital Hill-good burgers/bar grub and you might see a member of Congress getting tanked if you go in the evening; Smithsonian American Indian Museum Cafeteria-Native American cuisine-very different and very good, especially for lunch; Phillips Seafood on the waterfront-good stuff; Orleans House-good prime rib, salad bar

Be forwarned-DuPont Circle is the epicenter of DC's active 'alternative lifestyle"scene if that is or isn't your scene

The tour of the stables at the Old Guard HQs, Ft. Myer is interesting. The Old Guard -- Third Infantry Regiment -- is the unit responsible for the guard mount at the Tomb of the Unknowns and for the caisson team at all state funerals. Of the Smithsonian museums, the American History is my favorite, the Halocaust the most moving, and the new collection of aircraft at Dulles the most exciting.

I highly recommend using Metro to get around as DC traffic/parking is as bad as it gets. I spent a number of short tours in and around the Pentagon and I still go to DC for Veterans Day, staying at either Meyer or Belvoir. I like to spend my days in DC and then come back to the Arlington/Alexandria side for night time fun. Hard Times Cafe in Arlington is a great dive. Murhphy's Irish pub on King Street in Alex is a great watering home -- great fish and chips -- Guiness and Harp among the many great beers on tap. If you feel the need for a great jog, haul you fanny down to Arlington/Alex side of the potomac. They have a beautiful hiker/biker trail all along the river bank and another one that runs through the middle of the area, just to the west of Eisenhower in Alex.
