Tim Beck (HC Coastal Carolina)

Beck may be the problem, but it's pretty obvious that nobody here really knows. For the most part it's just wishful thinking that if we remove one guy, everything would be different. I doubt that's really the case… There was always the notion that this offense was a Ferrari and that the coaches just needed to get out of the way and not screw anything up. But it's probably closer to the truth that this offense was more of a DeTomaso, lots of flash, but some serious problems in terms of offensive line and receivers who weren't great, just good. Mix in a quarterback shuffle, and offense of strategy shuffle, and multiple coordinator shuffling and you get what we got.

Meh, maybe Beck is the only problem, but that seems unlikely.

The offense was heavily criticized for 2.5 years until October 2014. Obviously it was better than this one but the same limitations and flaws were present there.

OSU offensive PPG:

2012: 37.2 (21st nationally) (First year of Urban, sanctions, and a limited WR corps: 2011 PPG was 24.5 (81st nationally))
2013: 45.5 (3d)
2014: 44.8 (5th)
2015: 35.0 (28th)

So, anyone who was heavily criticizing the offense from 2012 through 2014 was, quite frankly, a moron.

A 2015 decline from 2014 of 10 PPG (22%) 87.2 total YPG (16.2%) and 55.2 passing YPG (22.2%) with a large group of proven personnel returning suggests that OSU had some new flaws and limitations in 2015.

2014 had great numbers but also had brutal outings against VT, PSU and stalled a bit down the stretch. MSU helped quiet the haters (and I think established trust in Tom from Urban). Obviously the postseason was tremendous. I'm not saying the criticism was valid, but it was very loud until Herman's stretch run at OSU.

As for The Game, Indiana ran the ball about 17 times in a row with great success against UM and only lost because they went Pete Carroll on the goalline. Michigan's LBs were absolute trash this year but hidden by a good DL and strong coverage behind them. When Glasgow was lost (having already lost Mone), they were a sieve against the run.

Agreed.. without the QB run, where would this team have been really since 2012...

I do agree that trampling scUM didn't necessarily prove a lot. Historically, OSU hasn't been good at throwing the ball. Last year, for the most part they were pretty good, if not quite elite, at it. This year, they regressed substantially in that regard and failed the eye test as well. IMO, OSU would have about a half dozen more national championships if they hadn't, for decades, generally not been able to make teams pay for stacking the box against them and blitzing. Last year, and to some extent in 2013, they did that. This year, they went back to the bad old days. I don't mind as much as many others that they failed to make the playoff because I think that their inability to throw the ball efficiently or punitively would have been exposed if they had. That said, based on history, I trust Meyer and Warriner to recognize and fix the issue a lot more than I trust Tim Beck to do so.

I'd love to see Warriner focus on the OL, dump Beck, and then hire a SINGULAR OC.
What I originally thought, but Warriner has proven himself as a competent play caller in ann arbor. The big problems this year were play calling and QB undevelopment. Solution is for Warriner to be OC and find the best damn QB coach available. Bowl game will prove whether or not that was a fluke.

I really don't get the notion that bowl game is a litmus test for whether we have figured out play calling problem and offensive rhythm by having Ed in the box because I highly doubt he will be next year with the new faces in the O Line. I view this as a temporary change only.

I'm more worried about coaching the QB's than play calling. JT and CJ both seemed to regress as passers this year and IMHO they need to find a better QB coach than Beck. They need someone that that can get the most out of the QB's kind of like Warinner has done with the OL since he's been here. I think the play calling will take care of itself with better position coaching.
