Michael Rothstein ‏@mikerothstein Crean said he talked to Jeff Meyer on the phone later yesterday, apologized. Wishes he didn't say anything after the game.
:shake:
Bob Baptist ‏@BBaptistHoops ... "We're never going to use victory or defeat as a platform." .... Said Meyer "showed great poise" during the incident with Crean.
:shake:
Brian Snow ‏@BSnowScout There have been unfriendly recruitments between IU and Michigan in last year. Major source of issues between staffs. Will leave it at that

Thanks to buckeyes_rock for posting this link in the game thread.
Indiana coach Tom Crean might have felt fortunate to escape Ann Arbor with a win, and an outright Big Ten title, after Michigan's missed free throws down the stretch fueled his team's 72-71 win. Instead, he embarrassed himself by berating Michigan assistant Jeff Meyer, a former IU assistant.

Meyer was part of the Indiana staff under coach Kelvin Sampson, whose violations at the program led to his dismissal.

"You helped wreck our program!" Crean screamed at Meyer while his Hoosiers celebrated a title, and while an Indiana official tried to block television cameras from recording the bizarre scene (video below).

He then walked away with a smirk like he'd stolen someone's lunch money.

Meyer, though, had been cleared by the NCAA in 2008, a fact Crean knows well. Hired by head coach John Beilein in 2008 and promoted in 2010, Meyer is known as a man of high integrity and has been cited (to us) by several recruits and their families as one of the most down to earth and honest coaches in the profession.

Michigan and Indiana have been recruiting head to head for some of the Midwest's (and Hoosier State's) top prospects. The U-M coaching staff won't show this scene to them - that's not their style. Chances are, however, that many will see it for themselves, perhaps seeing a side of Crean of which they weren't aware.

Unfortunately, the sideshow helped detract from a great day for Crean's team, which accomplished something outstanding in capturing an outright title. It also added fuel to a rivalry sure to gain steam in the near future - perhaps in less than a week, when the two teams could meet again in the Big Ten Tournament.

From reading that article and other snippets, it sounds like this is what happened:

- Crean was upset one of his 2014 commits was in Ann Arbor watching the game.

- He probably brought it up to Meyer in the post-game handshake. Reports say it was a two-way heated street, so I'm guessing Meyer didn't back down.

- The exchange resumed at center court with what we saw on the video: Crean acting like a maniac and Meyer acting very cool. Crean dropped the "wrecked the program" as a low blow to try and make himself feel better.

It's really not that different from what Bielema and Dantonio did on Signing Day in 2012; except that the forum and approach were different. Crean has little to no tact. It's been rumored before that he has threatened Matta and his assistants about alleged NCAA violations to get them to stop recruiting Indiana so hard. So this should come as no surprise.

I think one of the most interesting things about the story is that Dan Dakich was also an assistant with Sampson. Dakich has been all over Indiana's nuts this season. I really wonder what his take on the exchange would be.

It's really a sad display for someone who should have been celebrating an accomplishment rather than settling a personal score. But that's what Crean is sometimes... a sad, pathetic man.

I believe that Thad Matta could've had Tom Crean's job (IU head coach) in 2008, if he wanted it.

By 2008, Matta already had a Championship Game appearance.

I know that would eat at some coaches (knowing the other coach, Matta in this case, could have my job and maybe I'm the second choice).
