Game Thread Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20 (final)

Two years ago, I was really, really concerned about El Roberson and Darren Sproles going into the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State. We tore them a new ass. If Krenzel hits wide-open Jenkins on two passes, we're up at least 35-7, instead of 21-7, at half.

Last year, I was concerned about Oklahoma State and how easily they put up 35 first half points on Texas earlier in the season, and 35 on Oklahoma (before USC exposed the OU defense for what it was). We totally dominated the Cowboys.

I'm not quite as concerned about ND as I was KSU and OSU, but I'm not in any way overly confident (I'm always tentative about bowl games), although in my head I know we should win by 14+ points. Tressel knows how to prepare for bowl games as well as any college coach, so although I'm a bit apprehensive about the game in my gut, I would not be surprised to see us win along the lines of 38-17.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. Im normally not a cocky fan, but I think that we could play with any team in the country right now. Our defense is awesome (although we will give up some passing yards) and that our offense will just come out and bitch slap ND's defense. Maybe i'm wrong, but I really dont think so........

My 2 cents.

-The common opponets(MSU, scUM) were close games for both teams. So odds are this one will be too. I don't think it will be nail biting close but ido expect the result to be in doubt until 4th quarter.

-I think ND has the perfect offense to give the OSU D trouble but OSU D will keep OSU in the game even if they have trouble.

-OSU's offense should be able to score and they will have to score 20+, preferably 30+ to win. I expect Tressel to figure he has to score to win so the offense will come out strong unlike the PSU turnover brinkmanship game plan he has emplyed a few times in the past.

If OSU plays well they win, but they can't afford to play mediocre or they will lose. ND is out for respect and won't be easily defeated like they may have been in some past bowl games.

In 02, we saw tressel pull a fake FG run. In 03, after offensive woes we saw him air it out vs UM and continue the trend vs KState. In 04, they seemed to attack downfield more vs UM and then broke out an entirely different playbook for Teddy vs OkState.

I expect the playcalling to continue to be liberal in this bowl game as well. However, unlike some seasons, I think he has been attacking on offense a good amount this year (troy's woes and the swiss cheese OL would have negated any flavor of playcalling in the PSU game).

right, but the OkState game was out of necessity. JZ pulled a hammie.

true, but they also did other things such as a reverse to teddy for big yardage. I expect aggressive playcalling more than gadget plays in the upcoming bowl... tho I wouldn't mind seeing Ginn to Smith

I agree. With the way OSU is playing offensively and defensively, you might be able to put 12 guys on Notre Dame's side and the Bucks would still score more points. Ok - maybe that's stretching it a bit. But they're playing well enough to beat Notre Dame by 20 points, and that's with Tressel's conservative play-calling in the 4th quarter.

But I don't even want to count the number of times I've been confident in an Ohio State win only to be disappointed. Texas and Penn State are only the two most recent times.

The only thing that has me concerned and I know this has been discussed, is our tendency to give up big plays over the middle of the field. When we are in cover two I think NS is suspect to bite a little and you know Weiss sees this in film and Brady Quinn has the vision and ability to exploit that. Then again Tress has a knack for being prepaired for bowl games thats why I think it may be closer than we all would like to see but tOSU will win.

I think that we are very capable to win but trestle likes to play Conservative witch probally lost us the Texas game. Our defence
needs to play tighter and not so lose. If we can get the ball in the hands of holmes and ginn in the open field for most of the game then we should win. Ginn needs to keep ahold of the ball and not drop it. I would give him 1 chance and if he drops it i would put holmes in as main punt returner. Also our defence needs to beable to ruch Bradie With 3-5 guys so we can stayed covered. What is going to hurt us is that Bobby Carpenter probally wont be able to play so we just lost a really good player in the defence. Troy needs to look for other recivers than Holmes which he is getting bettier at
