tOSU Admission Standards

As someone who just graduated in June, I have this advice for you. Enjoy every fucking second at that university. Enjoy the people, the parties, the football games, the beer pong games, the basketball games, the concerts, the campus. Do what you have to do to do well and graduate, but enjoy yourself. It's going to be a great time for you.

Best places to meet people are your dorm and classes. Get involved in whatever it is you want to get involved in. As far as best places to eat go, I'm a big fan of Raising Canes and Buckeye Donuts. Both are on High Street. Enjoy yourself!!!

I could be wrong, but I'm under the impression that it is a little easier to get in out of state than in state because public schools like tOSU try to attract a diverse student body from states across the country. That being said, it is still a tough school to get in regardless of whether you are in or out of state.

It don't think it really makes that much of a difference, because colleges know which high schools use weighted scales and which don't.

GPA is important, but test scores are almost just as important(and they're the reason I was accepted to Ohio State and the reason I got the scholarship offer).

I know when I talk to sophomores at my high school, I always stress to them the importance of the ACT. It can really boost your resume if you score high, and it can prevent you from getting in even if you have a high GPA.

If you think about it, there are tons more kids who are top 10 percent in their class than there are kids that get 30+ on the ACT. I just can't stress enough how important I think the ACT is.

Sounds like you'll be fine to me. I know of worse who have gotten into OSU.

Strong extracurriculars and a solid essay can really set you apart from other applicants even if you have only decent standardized scores or grades- they're not the only thing that matters on your application.
FWIW, I was admitted on 12/25.

If you get a 28 on the actual ACT and you have over a 4.0 then you should be fine. Also, since your school has a weighted grading system, it could depend on your class rank. I only had a 3.7, but I was also ranked 11th in my class. I also only got a 23 on my ACT and got in. Also, I agree with swimwin39, make sure when you apply to spend a lot of time on your essay, I really worked hard on that and apparently it helped. From reading what you just said, you should get in without any problems.

after 5 years at OSU (resulting in a BA and an Master's) here are my own personal tips:

- buckeye doughtnuts is your friend. it's always open, the people who work there are terrific, and the food is good enough

- party, have fun, do whatever, but don't be an idiot. don't do something that will get you arrested and screw you over for when you eventually have to leave the magical world of college

- SCHEDULE AS SOON AS YOUR WINDOW OPENS. i cannot emphasize this enough, unless you're an honors student you will get screwed over if you wait. don't wait.

- PJ's is a sandwich place right across from the Out R Inn bar near the corner of woodruff and high street on north campus. it will save your life one night.

- don't neglect the music scene. it's underrated, but it's there and generally pretty great. keep a heads up for the CD101 low dough shows.

- hineygate is worthless unless you're old. you're in college, party with your friends on gameday

- you have advisors for a reason. use them. there are 50 thousand students at OSU, no one is going to give a crap about your concerns unless you make yourself heard.

- Used Kids (near buckeye doughnuts) is a great music store, go there.

- go to the skull session before the games in st. john arena. yes, you'll have to wake up at like 10 on a saturday. it's worth it you big baby.

- i will go to my grave saying that Hound Dogs is the best pizza in C-Bus (their delievery car is that limo with the basset hound on top). it's north on high street on the diagonal corner from a CVS

- OSU has incredible facilities. use the RPAC, the library (once it's renovated also i hate you), and the union (same deal) as often as you can because once you graduate the real world isn't as well funded.

- the Book Loft in german village is 32 rooms of bliss if you're a giant nerd

- get to know your professors. you might need something from them some day, and they deal with an enormous amount of students. try to stand out.

- yankee trader south on high near the bridge is the only place you need to go for halloween.

- the north market (behind yankee trader) has a ton of good food, and is not a bad place for a date

- keep up to date with and take advantage of OUAB events. you're paying the activity fee regardless of whether you do anything or not, you might as well get your money's worth.

- buy your books online whenever possible, you could save literally upwards of thousands of dollars

- help is on the way

Electron gives great advice except for Hound Dogs. I literally fly in from Chicago at least a couple of times during the "offseason" just to get some Adriatico's. Do you understand what kind of endorsement this is? I'm from CHICAGO and I fly in to Columbus for ADRIATICO's!

I gave the "help is on the way" guy one of his best lines. "My feet are cold, my hands like ice, and all I want, is to buy a slice!!!" Help is on the way!

This is good advice once you're in your major, but until then you need to know how to fend for yourself in the administrative behemoth that is tOSU. There are a lot of advisors (of varying usefulness) and they see a lot of students, and you can do a lot of their work on your own. Learn the ins and outs of the scheduling system and registrar calendars, know the GEC requirements and prerequisites for your preferred majors, and really read through the entire student handbook.

Also, take advantage of the disciplinary variety the GEC is meant for: take classes in as many areas as possible, just to get a sense of what's out there and ensure that you end up in the field that's right for you.

I have a friend who's daughter graduated from Ohio State about three years ago. I would think that if you could get your test scores up with your GPA and outside activities you might want to try get into the Honors Program. You might be a candidate for a free ride but your test scores need to come up and try and get involved in some other things while still in high school. Grades do not mean everything when it comes to admission. I have a nephew who applied to Stanford and Cal Berkeley and he found that out in short order.

Also, on football Saturdays - With 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, phone in your order to Chipotle on High St. It'll be done by the time the game is over and you make it out of the stadium. You will skip the line that has now extended around the block. If you haven't phoned in ahead of time, just go to Apollos. There usually isn't anyone there. This also works with Adriaticos - by the time you get to your dorm/house/apartment the delivery is on its way.
