tOSU at Minnesota, Thurs. Sep 2nd, 8 ET on Fox

Also entirely possible that, in spite of a good OL, they can't run the ball because Ohio State's DL has realized their potential all the way across the front. Good is good until it goes against great. Then it's only good for 3-and-out.

But yeah, if this doesn't roll out like the 2014 B1G CCG, let's all remember that Minnie might actually be good this year.

By the way, 8-4 would be a good goal for Minnie. In 1999 they were 8-4 in a year in which they played the Buckeyes (the Buckeyes gave them one of those losses in what was a down year for the Buckeyes). They have had a better record in a season in which they played the Buckeyes exactly zero times since 1940 (they were 8-0 National Champs in '40).

Even if you ignore the fact that the Buckeyes are on the schedule this year, 8-4 is not a bad goal. That would mean the Gophers were better than 8-4 in 2 years out of 3, which they haven't done since 1962. Murray Warmath was one of the better coaches in their history (or perhaps was fortunate to be coaching at a time when traditional conference powers were in a lull). He had 2 loss seasons in 60, 61, 62 and 67.

After Warmath departed in 1971, Minnesota went through 5 coaches (including Lou Holtz) who never won more than 2/3 of their games in a season. It didn't happen until Glen Mason went 10-3 in 2003. Thirty Five years had come and gone without a record better than 8-4 (though Mason had hit that exact number in 1999).

Another dozen years would come and go with no Gopher HC repeating the feat. Then Tracy Claeys led them to 9-4 in 2016. Then the Boat Rower did it in 2019, the first time it had happened twice in four years since 1962, which brings us back where we started.

So for Fleck to give them 2 seasons of winning > 2/3 of their games in 3 years, and with one of those years being one in which they played the Buckeyes; that would cement him as their best coach since the glory years of Bernie Bierman.

How glorious would it be if the first northern B1G team to return to glory was Minnesota, rather than some other B1G team that begins with the same 2 letters? Fortunately, for the Gophers if not for us, a return to glory for them need not include a victory over Ohio State.

Fun Fact: Bernie Bierman, by far the greatest coach in their history, was immediately succeeded by Wes Fesler. The same Wes Fesler that immediately preceded Woody Hayes.

Not even looking at the likes. But I know @BB73 has a viagra enduced boner like for both of them. Trivia time on your hands Pawpaw?

All of this makes me uneasy... at home, at night, Morgan playing for his father who just passed away, they're wearing special uniforms, they return a ton of players and they're severe underdogs.

I know I'm a broken record here but get a win here and move on. IMO this won't be a stress free game.

I’m with you. Also, BTN visited Minnesota late last week and said this is the best Minnesota team they’ve seen in 14 years.

I'd like to see us come out running the football until they prove that they can stop us.
Run successfully and set up the play-action.
Heavens to Murgatroyd, might we actually see a traditional screen pass, on a Thursday, on the road, before Labor Day?

Tip one for me.

Pretty certain Minny has this date circled. They've got best RB in B10, and a senior laden OL. QB is back as well. Minny may not get the tv exposure that the Buckeyes do, so they'll want to put their best foot forward, and attract any scouts that are watching this game. Oh yeah, an upset might skyrocket their national standing, plus get PJ a nice bonus and/or notice from an elite team looking for a coach (USC?). With an unproven QB, the Buckeyes will be at risk, but am betting that Coach Day will rotate QBs if CJ doesn't come out of the gate hot. Or not, leaving him in to work out the kinks so as not to destroy his confidence. Meanwhile tOSU OL will be road grading the Minny D, and the plethora of RBs will churn up the yardage. tOSU by 21. Go Bucks!

I feel pretty good with this one because of the culture that Meyer started and upon which Day has improved. We have 4 and 5 star talents at every spot who seem to take this seriously and if they don't, there is 4 and 5 star talent behind them who will. I used to be nervous about this type of game. With Urban's guys there was talent, but I often got the sense that they thought they just had to show up. Under Tressel, we usually seemed to take things seriously, but didn't have anything like the horses we have now. These guys know that their competition is Alleybammy and Clem's-son and they know they need to handle pretenders to the throne like MinnieMouse to get there. Fuck'em all. Unleash hell on Thursday night national tv.

I don't know why but this game just worries me. If CJ does what he's supposed to do then we'll win and probably cover but if he doesn't? Well this will be a game in the 4th.

One thing is for sure... we will find out if talent or experience matters most.

80-90% of OSU's talent has a lot of experience.

Minus the QB which is my prime concern. I fully expect CJ to play well but for some reason I just don't feel great about this game.

I think it's our back 7 giving me so much concern. Yes we have some experience at LB but no starting experience. Also half our secondary is pretty green too...

Wish we could've gone Akron, Tulsa, Oregon and then Minnesota but such is life.
