2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I have Tyreke Smith as a DT in the mold of Dre'mont Jones so just change his position and you have your wish :)
I have Tyreke more in the mold of Diesel Washington, but a DT/DE nonetheless...

It's crazy to think of a DL class that could finish in Feb as:
DT:
Vincent
Togiai
Smith

DE:
Cox
Oweh
Parsons

Insane to possibly land the #1 and #2 DT(per 247) after getting temporarily hyped over Silvera, who really seemed excited about the OSU offer for about an hour before going into full Hurricane mode. We would replace the perceived interest of Silvera with the real interest from Togiai, a kid every bit as good(albeit from a place where it wouldn't help future recruiting). A dominant DT that can also push the pocket and get to the QB in Vincent. And a tweener in Smith who could easily see time in the middle in the rushmen package, but also assist on the inside and getting to the QB like Vincent.
We'd also close with the most athletic set of DE's in one class, and 1(Oweh) who is so raw but has the tools be better than them all.

I think our DB class is becoming more clear as the months go on. I don't see Campbell being in this class, as it won't even make it here this summer, and IDK if a visit has even been set. But I'm sure everyone would be happy with DB finish of:
CB:
Banks
Cook(it works in our favor that he didn't visit Clemson this weekend for their Cookout event)

S:
Woodbey
Proctor

After the big DB haul for 2017, get 4 and use the schollies elsewhere(cough cough OL)

Would love to see some of the higher ups give a post FNL update to their class predictions.

Anyone?

It's gonna be...

At this very moment I think OSU lands:

Kamryn Babb
Blue Smith
Jackson Carman
Another OL (William Barnes? Rasheed Walker? Darrell Simpson? Juice Scruggs?)
Tyreke Smith
Micah Parsons
Jayson Oweh
Another DT (Michael Thompson? Tommy Togiai? Aeneas Hawkins?)
K'Vaughn Pope
Christopher Oats
Anthony Cook

That's 11 to go with 15 committed, although I have my concerns about Chatfield and Florida. Oklahoma continues to push for Proctor, USC continues to push for Woodbey and Banks wants to take visits. I could see Chatfield and at least one other verbal head elsewhere but don't have anything concrete...I just know when you recruit at this high a level there tends to be some drama that comes with it. I feel fairly confident about everyone on that list except Parson and Oats.

This is what I paid $49.95 for?! I think I speak for everyone when I say that we are going to need some more confidence in Parsons and Oats.

Serious question. You have Pope as "in" and list your concerns with Chatfield. Is Pope "in" because of those concerns? Or is he "in" even with keeping Chatfield?

I think they project different positions. I think there was some hope being held out for Gaoteote and Tuliaupupu but they are longshots with or without Pope, IMO. I think Pope did enough for Coach Davis to convince Coach Meyer he should be in this class and they can still chase the other two knowing they have a solid LB class of Mitchell, Gant and Pope locked up.

So you only see 4 on the OL? Carman, Wray, Jones and ____________ from your list or surprise player.

*For all the talk the past few years of the need at DT, it was the OL play that held us back much more. And with T Smith being an inside guy IMO and Vincent, I'd rather see just 2 DTs and 5 for the OL personally.

I have started the process for a refund myself. I was told 8 to 12 weeks and I had to sign the refund form in triplicate and I got to keep the gold copy. The fax went out today so I hope to have something by the time we play for the NC.

I know Tyreke to DT is a forgone conclusion to most, but just from remembering both Adolphous and Dremont highschool highlights, I just don't think they were as twitchy, quick, or had the bend that tyreke has coming out highschool, I mean sure he has the frame to become that, I just think he could just as easily be a great DE or maybe a DE with DT flexibility like Nick Bosa

Not one of the higher ups, but I'll give it a shot. Pretty similar to Wade's estimate, albeit with an extra scholarship at OL...

QB Emory Jones
RB Brian Snead
RB Master Teague
RB/WR Jaelen Gill
WR
Kamryn Babb
WR/TE L'Christian Smith
TE Jeremy Ruckert
OT Max Wray
OT
Jackson Carman
OT/OG/DT Matthew Jones
OL
Rasheed Walker/someone else?
OG/C Fredrick Scruggs
DE/ATH Micah Parsons
DE Brenton Cox
DE
Jayson Oweh
DT/DE Tyreke Smith/Aeneas Hawkins
DT Taron Vincent
DT
Tommy Togiai/Nesta Silvera/someone else?
LB Teradja Mitchell
LB Dallas Gant
LB
K'Vaughan Pope/Andrew Chatfield
LB
Solomon Tuliaupupu/Christopher Oats/Palaie Gaoteote
CB Sevyn Banks
CB
Anthony Cook
CB Tyson Campbell/someone else
S/CB Jaiden Woodbey
S Josh Proctor

This is a 27 scholarship class and its very likely to be more like 25-26. However, the way the staff is recruiting right now, it's hard to figure out the exact numbers.

Need to finish strong on the OL & WR recruiting. I think Kamryn & L'Christian are pretty much locks. The way things are going, it may be a 4-man OL class (ala Wade's guess), but I'm REALLY hoping we can get 5 gnarly Slobs with an emphasis at OT. We HAVE to get Jackson Carman... we just have to. Rasheed Walker would be a tremendous get if we can pull it off to go with Jackson & Max at OT, but he's the biggest stretch on the board IMHO.

Pretty sure we're going 6 DL in this class (graduating 4, Darius Slade's transfer, and very well may have Hubbard and D.Jones skip to the league early). If we can get the 6 listed above, that is an absolutely sick DL class. Pretty unbelievable when you are looking at potentially passing over the type of talent that Hawkins is (who tape reminds me a lot of Michael Bennett at that age).

The LB recruiting is the interesting topic right now... looks like the staff may prefer Pope over Chatfield now, which might have something to do with Oweh's emergence at DE? And we're still recruiting Tuliaupupu, Oats, & Gaoteote pretty hard, so looks like we're leaning towards a 4-man LB class instead of 3 now... which makes some sense. Worley graduates, Baker's likely to leave early, Nick Conner's long rumored to be taking a medical hardship, and Booker could leave early as well if he has a killer comeback year.

The big question at DB looks to be whether we take 2 or 3 CBs. If it's the right ones, I think they'll take 3. Cook & Campbell would be an unbelievable tandem to go with Sevyn, though Campbell will be a tough battle. If it was just Cook and Sevyn in this class, that would be still a fantastic class following the one we just had last year, especially considering Woodbey has the talent and flexibility to potentially play CB as well.

I only see four OL with Jones being one. It's rare to have a player who could truly be an OSU-caliber player on either side of the ball. I think Jones projects as a starter on the DL. I think he projects as a eventual draft pick on the OL. So my thought is take Carman, Wray, Jones and another and then load up again in '19. I also like to look at attrition. They graduate Price and Jones. The only guys I could see potentially leaving early are Prince or Pridgeon and both would need to explode on the scene in a big way for that to happen. Could they lose someone else to transfer or injury? Of course. And if that happens they could always circle back to someone in-state like Blaine Scott, Eric Miller, Darian Kinnard or Jimmy McKenna.

Ok, I will give this a shot:

QB Emory Jones (Emory is solid and we are set with him in '18)
RB Brian Snead (appears as solid as can be)
RB Master Teague (see above, we are set at RB for '18)
RB/WR Jaelen Gill (the future in the Pivot, 5 star is warranted)

WR Kamryn Babb (matter of when, not if...we land our top WR target before the end of the summer)
WR L'Christian Smith (would be shocked if he heads anywhere but OSU, WR all the way imo)
TE Jeremy Ruckert (nice to have him in red, top TE in the country = secured)
OT Max Wray (solid)

OL Jackson Carman (will give us some drama but he will be a Buckeye)
OL Matthew Jones (I am thinking he starts out at OL mostly due to need)
OL Juice Scruggs (think he ends up a Buckeye, not positive though)
OL ??? (I think we need 4 but no idea who...I have Walker firmly to PSU right now...thinking we might have to send out a few new offers...maybe we pursue Traore?)
DE Micah Parsons (I think we are way out front and land him barring a miracle)
DE Brenton Cox (think he is as firm as you can get and a legit 5 star talent)
DE Jayson Oweh (I think we pulled ahead here by a bit and really want him in the class...seriously think he could end up being the best DE in the '18 class before it is said and done, and we can afford to take at least one "project" type with Cox and hopefully Parsons on board)
DT/DE Tyreke Smith (I believe we are ahead here and I like the versatility...think he ends up a Buckeye)
DT Taron Vincent (solid)
DT Tommy Togiai (I have him penciled in for now but definitely in pencil...loved his visit and looks like he is leaning our way strong after last weekend...would be a great compliment to Vincent)
LB Teradja Mitchell (solid commit it seems)
LB Dallas Gant (solid)

LB K'Vaughan Pope (will have his name in red come August 4th, seems the staff gave him the green light...would love having him in this class...would have to think this closes the class but will have to see if the staff still pursues Tuliaupupu/Gaotete)
DB Sevyn Banks (not sure he sticks for sure but seems fairly solid for now)
DB Anthony Cook (think he is still leaning our way but things have been quiet...another dogfight it seems)
DB Tyson Campbell (not sure we land him without Silvera or Chatfield, but we'll see...not sure who else would slot in here...staff has him at the top of the board though, so I like our chances)
DB Jaiden Woodbey (seems way more solid recently but still think we will be in for a fight to keep him...the fight is worth it though and I think we keep him)
DB Josh Proctor (seems very solid but OU will push hard...think he sticks with the good guys though)
