tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Well stated, Script. Ponies won't do if you don't have the horses. Gotta have the talent, however, gotta be able to play the pieces on the board as well. Would like to see that statistic spread out among the position groups. tOSU has had an incredible amount of highly ranked players at the WR and DB positions over the years, but sorely lacking in several other positions (OL to be exact). That's why this year's OL is in doubt I'm thinking. Projects are fine, as long as you've got the studs in place. What I'm stumbling in saying is that in this era of college football, these young men have got to see some action to keep their interest. Coach J substitutes freely, even when game is on the line, and his DL troops have responded well to that. Other groups, not so much. And they lose interest and leave. Maybe that's a good thing, dunno, but it's hard (to me at least) to see a kid leave and excel on another team when it coulda been tOSU. On the other hand, coaches are paid millions to 'win', and you want the pieces on the board that can help reach that goal. Not certain that I've got an answer, maybe experimentation(?) during a game? Last year is a prime example of NOT putting in the youngsters when game is out of hand. OL, QB, DB, LB are prime examples. That's why this year is a 'rebuilding' year (yeah, I know tOSU reloads...), but OL and QB play has suffered. Go Bucks
I think the only question mark left on this team is the OL. And if that gets figured out, OSU is in the CFP once again. And has the talent to beat scUM in AA. I think last year, Day & Co didn't feel that the backups were up to speed enough and there would've been too big of a drop off to sub in. Though it was frusterating to watch starters in in late games even when the games were put away.
The guys that OSU lost had slim chances of making impacts anyway. And I honestly wasn't surprised by any of them leaving(though Kaleb Brown leaving was somewhat of a surprise, but I figured at least 2 '22 WRs would transfer). As long as Day is the HC, I wouldn't worry about QBs. There was so much worry when Fields left, and multiple calls for Stroud's benching after the Oregon game, yet here we are. Again worrying about the next OSU QB starter, forgetting that many in the fan base wanted McCord to start over Stroud after the Akron game. The offense will be fine under Day/Hartline, and I'm sure year 2 for Knowles should go better as well.
But the flow of talent has to be constant if OSU wants to keep up in the NC hunt. And we're seeing this cycle that teams can't rely solely on collectives to bring in the talent. Coaches need to still coach, and they also need to find the right chemistry of players as well. Because its interesting that aTm is 4th on the list of blue chips, yet had a nightmare of a season.

Honest question-

Would you rather they commit and then take other visits?
Or narrow down their list, take all visits and then commit?

Interesting question that I saw posed on 11W. Because like it or not, these are the recruiting options going forward
Personally, narrow the list, take all visits and then commit.

But it's a life changing decision for these guys, so however they want to do it, as long as they're up front and transparent with the coaching staff, is fine by me.

I don't have a preference, but I understand that in this era of NIL/portal that building relationships for your potential next stop is important. See them all and make the decision that's right for you.

Apples to oranges, one scenario they are early in the process and the other is at or near the end. Obviously you'd choose have them pick you after the process is over because then you know you win. But if you'd ask me if I'd rather have them committed in June and taking visits or not committed in June and taking visits I'm gonna pick committed well that answer is the opposite option lol

All valid answers, and there's not a wrong or right one. But from what I heard on one of the podcasts, kids are being told that the more followers they have. The more NIL money they can generate. Its hard to tell your kid(or if you were in that same position) to just commit and shut your recruitment down. Problem is, while you piss off one set of fans, another loves you. And a false perception of you gets created(i.e. being called a diva, prima donna, selfish, money hungry, etc)

They need to be taught that they shouldn't care what labels are put on them by other people. Especially if you are going to play big boy games and generate clicks through "drama".

Seems kind of naïve to think you can get all that pub without ruffling some feathers. There is nothing free in this world gents. You want the $, you pay a price.

Oh I don’t think most care about what fans think. If that were the case OSU would’ve lost many of the high profile out of state recruits that they landed, and JJ Smith would’ve decommitted already. I’m sure coaches are telling them to block out the “fans”, and focus on getting through HS, graduating and getting to college and then develop into an NFL talent.
I can only imagine what an OOS recruit from a state with a winning program is dealing with as far as hometown pressure. It can’t be easy for Air Noland, Jelani Thurman, Brandon Inniss, etc

Said another way, do you 'hold' your place by committing early, and continue to see if the grass is 'greener' elsewhere, or hold off and face the pressure of hearing 'better commit now or lose your place in our class' as commit deadline draws near. You can bet that schools will continue to recruit other guys for that same position, and 'pull' your offer if someone better signs up. Guess that might work for the elite schools, not to much for the second tiers schools. If a coach says they will 'hold' your spot for you, makes the recruit feel important, until they get that call, uhhhh, we've gotta pull your offer, as we've filled that spot with xxxx. Hard to know the best strategy. Am certain that Buckeye Nation feels/believes that tOSU does things on the up and up, but not so naive that Day & Co wouldn't stoop to breaking their verbal to improve their team. Go Bucks!
