2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

We don’t really throw to TE anyways, so I’m kinda good with bringing extra tackle in to be honest. I thought Donovan Jackson at TE were highly successful this year, TBH.

Urban did it in 2012 when he thought our offensive line was kinda weak.

At some point we should just acknowledge we aren’t going to throw to our TE’s much. So they might as well be elite blockers.

I’m nervous about Gee Scott to be honest. I’m sure most are…..I just don’t see a natural fit although I’d love for us to make him a weapon.
Hamilton was a 6'2 block first TE from Memphis, TN, he essentially was an undersized OL that could catch.

Ricks to Bama.
Interesting timing.
Made sure all their recruits were signed even floated they had no interest in him.

Meanwhile we didn’t have interest in him and lost DB recruits.
There are still dozens of CBs in the transfer portal, OSU will be fine. Especially if Coombs is back there coaching them

Given Brook’s last minute flip I’d say its probably better than average chance that Coombs will not be back

Hamilton remains one of my favorite HS film packages to watch. I hope he does come back over to offense….

TE is just a weird position for OSU right now. It’s OK to admit….

Maybe this is wrong thread but something needs to be abundantly clear about Coach Day.

He loves spreading the field out, and TE’s are not major weapons in his system. Let’s just acknowledge that. He’d prefer the slot receiver abuse his coverage than rely on a TE to do anything of significance (unless it’s a designed play like against Clemson where we set that bitch up from our first offensive play of game).

That said, we need blocking TE’s first. I don’t think this is debatable. We basically just wasted Ruckert’s final season, although it’s hard to complain when his targets are going to Jaxon Smith-Njigba……..

I get the reason why it happens, I’d just state, let’s then acknowledge our TE’s should essentially be extensions of the offensive line. It is what it is….

Besides Hamilton, I don’t see too many of those guys on our roster.

Nitzche's eternal recurrence, time is a flat circle, there is nothing new under the sun etc etc etc

James Patrick Tressel put an eligible number on his 6th OL in 2005 and won The Game.

More of this "punch them in the mouth with a fist full of quarters" attitude please.

Yeah, I don’t disagree. Our run game was soft this year. Someone can do the research but I’d guess we had the most offensive plays with a tackle for loss on probably the last 20-25 years.

We ran a single TE more than we ever have in recent memomry this year….and it certainly contributed to lack of run game. We tried to out flank teams on the outside with WR, rather than bully teams with multiple TE’s.

let’s just admit it…..we’re kinda soft right now.

can’t wait to see how we address this going into next year.

The only thing that is clear is that the rules are not.

I don't see how the NCAA has any role in this, which would leave it to the courts. That would mean somebody has to suffer damages. So one school has to take another to court? That would be fun.

I do know this. When two men have a dispute and agree to take it outside and settle it with their fists, the winner will always be the guy who pulls out his knife.

So while I agree that OSU needs to be more proactive (or so it seems since we don't really know what is happening behind the scenes) just how far do we want them to go?

Of course Day is not the kind of guy to pull out a knife, so we need to cough up $100,000,000 and bring in John Calipari. If that happens I am all for turning my attention to the two time NCFA champs and rolling the clock back a century or so. We can get Peacock to televise it and I wont have to drop Youtube TV so I can keep ESPN.
And in a knife fight, the winner is the guy who pulls out a gun.

I’m like Jax, it’s change, but it still says Buckeyes on the jerseys, and I want Ohio State to bring a bazooka to the fight.

So at the heart of it all...what do you find immoral or even objectionable about businesses paying players for use of their NIL?

I ask because that's all that's happening. Can some schools/booster groups/whatever find ways to make more money for their kids? Sure. This is America. Our business is business. Go compete. Second place is a set of steak knives.

Well the issue here is this clearly is not evolving to be ‘Merica NIL from a business perspective as you position it, unless you include wins and losses on the payoff side of the ROI ledger. Not that I personally feel one way or the other how it should be, but I do think it’s reasonable to still expect otherwise regarding the wins and losses part. That’s the part that is (I think mostly subconsciously) rubbing some people wrong with the “blank check slush fund” aspect that has been more recently popping up.

Having said all that, people wanting to pay for players simply for wins, rather than for capitalism reasons as is currently the positioning, is inevitable as well and will soon move beyond the current “gaming” (sketchy) phase in my IMO and become more accepted and standard.

How do you know that? Have you seen any of the businesses involved share their ROI numbers? Have we seen any of the contracts? Anyone here able to give a good breakdown on the different laws by state?

I think throwing around phrases like "blank check slush fund", "gaming" and "sketchy" is more uniformed and reactionary "get off my lawn" type reactions to something new that people don't really have the first clue about. Absolutely zero basis for any of it other than unfounded fear.

As far as the idea that college football fans, specifically OSU fans, are somehow justifiably uncomfortable with spending money for wins and losses well that is hypocrisy to the point of absurdity given the revenues involved in the sport and the salaries of coaches.

It's been about money for a long, long time. The kids who pay the physical price to provide the entertainment that drives the revenue are finally getting at least some of that money and people want to get all sanctimonious about it.

Don't be a bunch of Dabos.

People are allowed to have complex opinions that involve wanting players to be paid their value while also not being interested in CFB being just another pro league with recruiting becoming free agency and bags of cash being thrown around.

Like, there is room for some fucking nuance here, folks.

Ohio State is again the top class in the Big Ten and ranks No. 4 in the nation. The class is led by five-star linebacker CJ Hicks, a fantastic athlete who could play right away. An interesting addition is Sonny Styles, a five-star safety hybrid who re-classified from the 2023 class. A very important signee was Devin Brown as the Buckeyes had to go deeper into the cycle to secure their quarterback and get Brown, a big riser during the summer and fall.

1 - Ohio State
2 - Michigan
3 - Penn State
4 - Indiana
5 - Michigan State
6 - Iowa
7 - Rutgers
8 - Maryland
9 - Purdue
10 - Minnesota
11 - Wisconsin
12 - Illinois
13 - Northwestern
14 - Nebraska
