TWICE AS NICE! DANCE TEAM WINS DOUBLE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Ohio State dance team competed over the last two days at the UDA College National Championships in Orlando, Fla. and the Buckeyes and making the trip home to Columbus with some well-earned hardware.

Ohio State won a double national championship, claiming crowns in both the Division IA Jazz and Pom divisions. The wins came after performances in the finals on Wednesday afternoon and evening.

“This season was unlike any other and I am most proud of the resilience the team showed through an extended season,” said head coach Melissa McGhee. “They did not let circumstances beyond their control define them and pushed through with passion and determination to produce two amazing routines! This was a total program effort – our choreographers and consultants, support staff, administration, parents and alumni all contributed to this year’s success!”

The Buckeyes’ title in the pom division came of the strength of a 96.42 score in the finals, which was nearly two points better than runner-up Minnesota. Ohio State scored a 96.1833 in the semifinals, which was also the event’s top score.

In jazz, Ohio State once again topped Minnesota in both the semifinals and finals. The Buckeyes’ score in the finals was 96.35 after a 95.75 showing the semifinals.

“This team’s journey was far from an easy one, but that’s what makes this moment so rewarding,” said senior Maddie Smith. “In a year where practices, events and even nationals were not promised, this team found an internal drive and motivation to maximize our potential this season. Winning two nationals championships is the icing on the cake to an already fulfilling UDA Nationals. I am so proud of this team and their determination to accomplish our lofty goals.”

This year’s double title extends a championship run for the program that began in 2018 when it won both the D1A Jazz and D1A Pom divisions. The program has now won a total of six national championships. And this year’s group of seniors have been particularly accomplished: they won both jazz and pom titles in 2018, just a pom title in 2019, just jazz in 2020 and both again in 2021. The senior group consists of Maddie Smith, Kendall Kropp and Mia Snaidauf.

“I am so proud of what the team has accomplished to get to this moment,” said Kropp, an exercise science education major. “Even though this year looked different and we had many obstacles to overcome, we stayed locked in as a team every step of the way. These two titles represent the love, dedication, and hard work we put into the season.”

OK, who knew that the B1G now has an All-Conference Cheer Team?

BIG TEN ANNOUNCES FIRST ALL-CONFERENCE CHEER TEAMS

Rising senior Julia Aepli, a Dublin, Ohio native, has been named the inaugural Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year representing the co-ed cheer teams in the conference. The Big Ten, with nearly 900 student-athletes comprising the cheer and dance teams of its 14 member institutions, named an all-conference team for the first time in its history.

Head coaches from each school nominated team members for the following selections:
  • Academic All-Big Ten
  • Community Service All-Big Ten
  • First team All-Big Ten
  • Second team All-Big Ten
Using that criteria, coaches voted on student-athletes for the academic and community service all-Big Ten teams. For the all-conference first and second teams, nominated student-athletes created highlight videos showcasing gameday skills and technical skills in the areas of tumbling, partner stunting, basket tosses, and pyramids. Coaches then ranked the videos for males and females (not including their own student-athletes.) After tallying all the votes, the first and second teams were selected. The second through fifth top-ranked males and females from the first team were named has honorable mention for athlete of the year with the student-athlete receiving the most votes being named athlete of the year.

The Ohio State cheer team is proud to announce the following winners:
  • Alex Markley, sophomore from Doylestown, Ohio. Alex was named to Community Service All-Big Ten team and second-team All-Big Ten
  • Allissa Thornton, junior from Powell, Ohio. Allissa was named first team All-Big Ten
  • Keyli Smith, junior from Johnstown, Pa. Keyli was named first team All-Big Ten and honorable mention Athlete of the Year (female)
  • Braden DeLullo, junior from Erie, Pa. Braden was named first team All-Big Ten and honorable mention Athlete of the Year (male)

It was a good start to the weekend for Ohio State's cheerleading team.

On the first day of the 2024 UDA College Nationals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, OSU's spirit program won the national championship on Friday night.

The Buckeyes dominated the competition on their way to the national title. Their 98.45 points were more than the difference between the second-place University of Mississippi spirit team (94.7333) and fifth-place Louisiana-Lafayette (91.5167).
