Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, Sat 11/21, 3:30pm ET, ABC

You think this is just a smoke screen?

On a conference call Monday, Cook said, “the shoulder is great. Feels good.” He declined to comment if he’s been able to throw so far this week or if he has had X-rays, however.

Just sayin': Conner Cook is a highly rated NFL QB prospect. A shoulder injury isn't something to "mess around with" especially on a QB's throwing shoulder, etc. A further aggravation of the injury (i.e. playing before fully healed) could easily cost him millions in the NFL draft and/or an NFL career. Just ask Braxton Miller about shoulder injuries.
True, but not all shoulder injuries are the same. On the mild end you can have strain, bursitis, tendinitis, etc., and on the severe end you have ligament damage with joint instability, labral tears, partial or full dislocation, rotator cuff ruptures, and the like - which are all injuries that potentially put one in the position of needing surgical intervention. Based only on what I saw of the play he got hurt on, I believe his issues are probably on the milder end of the scale, but those injuries can definitely limit a throwing athlete in terms of him dealing with pain and weakness. Based on the degree of pain he was showing on the sideline, I do not believe he will be 100% in one week, but sometimes a mild injury can produce severe pain, so it's just speculation.

Either Dantonio knows he is fine, but wants Ohio State to work on the other QBs, or he knows he is not going to play or likely to play well, and does not want to confirm that they are working on Plan B.

My guess is they know he isn't 100%

Even if he is good enough to start he's going to get hit a lot so chances are if it's just good enough to throw with it's a solid hit away from same sort of reaction he had last week.

Also, saw their plan B and he isn't going to beat OSU. He was in before Cook got hurt, which was weird. I took it to be a case of giving OSU some extra stuff to have to spend time looking at.

The comforting thing is Sparty's path to victory is very narrow in this game: their defense has to perform better than they have all year, and a slightly/significantly injured Cook needs to throw for 300+ and a bunch of TDs against an OSU D that hasn't allowed that. They would need to establish the ability to run the ball - which they haven't really done all year - to keep all those Buckeye DL creatures off of the QB, against a Buckeye defense that is darn good against the run. Their leaky OL would have to provide lanes to run and enough protection. Their defense - which boasts a really good line with a questionable back 4-7 will have to contain Barrett, Elliott, Miller, Thomas, et al. When you add it all up, Sparty needs special teams scores, Ohio State to turn the ball over, they need to play way better than they have all year, and they need Ohio State to play their worst game of the year. I will be absolutely shocked if Ohio State does not win this game convincingly. When you are down to hoping the other team helps you, you are in trouble. Cook has to be 100% for them to win, and if he isn't, or doesn't play, their chances of winning go down to something close to zero.

In 2013 the Sparty defense gave them a good chance against anyone - and they certainly showed that vs. an Ohio State team that couldn't defend a screen pass run by a bunch of grade school kids. 2015 is a whole different story. Their defense can and will be had, and there will be a tremendous amount of pressure on their offense to outscore Ohio State. Possible with a healthy Cook throwing darts? Sure, but not likely even if. Possible if Cook is not 100%? Yeah, but very, very narrowly. On the other hand, an OSU offense and defense that is playing at an above average efficiency level should beat them unless something unusual happens in the special teams and turnover areas.

Agreed. Whole lot more room for error on the OSU side than for Sparty. Add in freezing rain and 12mph winds for the team that has to sling it all over the lot to win.

I was confident when he was 100% healthy so I'm still pretty confident in this one.

I'm not worried at all about losing to Sparty and I'm the kind of fan who worries more than I probably should about losing games.

I'm worried about every game. I live in constant fear. Like today, I was afraid that my shoes were untied throughout the whole day.

Thank goodness I remembered to tie them before I left the house; otherwise I could have tripped and fell next to the bus and died.

That's why you get velcro strap shoes

Our strengths match up their strengths though. They can pass and we can rush the Passer and play pass defense. Our rush defense has had a few hits early in the year and they can't rush the ball. We are great at running the ball and they are so so at defending it and we have explosive athletes out wide and they aren't that great defending the pass. We SHOULD crush this team but this season hasn't been holding true to what should happen. Either way I think we wake up due to the importance of this game and cruise to a win.

Nasty weather favors the home team. Because I said so.
I'll drink to that brotha.

You didn't address their strength of getting after the QB. Particularly given the struggles OSU had in pass protection last weekend, I think the OSU o-line will have its hands full with McDowell and Calhoun, who are both very good.
