Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

And on Saturday we'll be playing Virginia Tech, not Navy.
I didn't compare W&M and Navy at any point.

I am with you, the transitive property doesn't work in sports as a reliable predictor.

However, we are simply looking for clues and trying to extrapolate probabilities.

VT not being able to physically outclass William and Mary gives me the sense that they will not be able to physically outclass Ohio State. If VT fans think the same thing after watching us play Navy that is their business.

Navy > WM but that doesn't mean OSU> VT in and of itself.

I am with you in thinking it all comes down to their D, specifically DL, vs our O and OL.

On a side note the line has dropped a point from -12 to -11 which doesn't mean much at this point other than sharp players usually bet earlier in the week and the public comes in at the end. If it drops through the -10 key number I'll be more worried.

I wasn't trying to extrapolate probabilities. No game score mentioned, nor did I even mention VT's game (I didn't watch it and have no plans to)
Just saying we didn't blow the doors off anyone either and guessing what any BCS conference team will be looking to exploit against us: the OLine.

My perception is that if a service academy is able to slap our OLine around, VTech will have an easier time of doing it. Usually the lines are a weak point for the academies, the triple option helps with that on offense... but ffs, they're playing DLs who are the same size as our LBs (though their NT was a pretty big dude). So I think I'm warranted to be concerned about how our OLine will deal with a better DLine.
If they can exploit the OLine and take away the screen game, that puts the offense in a lot of trouble. That's all I'm saying.

And for all we know right now, Navy might be better than Virginia Tech this year.

As a team, wouldn't surprise me. But I bet Navy would love to have a guy like Maddy, to say nothing of VT's secondary.
This is the kind of defense that, if the OLine doesn't improve fast, could well hold us under 20 points and we get to see how this new D holds up in a pressure game.
If the OLine does, then I think we can blow them out.

A very legitimate possibility

SR laden service academy team that gives you fits stylistically vs a FR/SO laden middle of the road ACC team that plays the same way you do and probably with a lot less talent.

I know which match up I'm picking 100 time out of 100 if I were the coach.

The perception that Navy beat/pushed/dominated the buckeyes d line or o line is not something I share. Navy's d line was very quick and they did a great job of getting off of their blockers. When the Buckeyes finally went back to running between the tackles that advantage disappeared. Navy did an excellent job of cut blocking on the defensive ends and the linebackers and corners did not close on the option pitch even late in the game.

They couldn't because they were also cut down too. It's not that they were just too undisciplined or slow but rather they just couldn't stay on their feet. Credit Navy.
