Tour de France update thread...

buckem....too much respect for armstrong to make a strong bet against him....

did you hear the part where Lance tried to recruit Basso to USP during the off-season and Basso declined....saying he would rather be somewhere where he will be in a position to win the tour....id say he is in position....Lance also said that Basso is the future of the tour...i just hope it is next year....

Someone mentioned the crowds a few posts back - that is exactly what I was saying earlier. I fear something bad is going to happen. A crazy idiotic fan causing a wreck by Lance or even something not quite as bad like just getting in his way and causing a slow down.

I fear more though, the total lack of civility shown by some of those "fans". I just think Lance could be the object of a horrible attack causing a fall. I'm not saying Monica Seles attack, but maybe a pull of a handlebar when he is too close to the fans or maybe a punch to the face as he is riding by. I seriously hope not - but those fans were nutty looking..... you couldn't even see the road at some points.

Lance is the man.
(I still think my "other" man, Mayo would have been dealin and stealin' had he not fallen early on)

That and that he tried to abandon Saturday and his team wouldn't let him... Losinf 37 minutes or whatever... on one stage kind of tells me he blew his load in the Daupine Libere.

I didn't see that when I did get a chance to watch. I'd love to hear more about his team and keeping him in it. Sounds like a great "team" to me. Or at least a supportive team, which is important.

This Basso guy is pretty damn good oh BTW.

I didn't exactly see it either... but the impression of it that I got was that... as you know Mayo is a Basque (Along with most of his team) and the Pyranees are in Basque country... I think the message was more... "Get the hell back on your bike, you can quit in the Alps if you want, but not here"

So I guess that's supportive.

Heh. I'm sure the team manager sicked his boys on him. That would be like me quitting a race in America in my home state. That would suck eh? "hey everyone come watch me race" ... and then quit. NOT good.

I still have my 91' Nishiki bike..... old, tired but true.

I am starting to really enjoy watching the racing. I never was able to see it before, except for coverage on the major networks. Now that I have OLN I can see a ton of stuff. It was interesting to hear that Voeckler took his communications earpiece out because he was tired of listening to his team director. Also, I wondered how those guys rode that long without some sort of distraction. I learned they often pump music into the earpieces.

I'm kinda just learning some of the nuances about this sport. It definitely helps to have an American to root for.... I think it wouldn't hold as much sway with me if there wasn't an American to root for. BTW - for whatever reason - I just don't like Hamilton. nope. He seems kinda squirly to me....

It's an awesome sport - but for me at least - I need that rooting interest.

good info jlb....you may be on to something.....one of two things is going to happen tomorrow...

1-ullrich takes this personally and demands his team back and rides possessed....

2-or he knows he is beaten and is starting the process of backing out of this tour....

huge credit given to jlb...i didnt think it would get this far......

I don't think either is necessarily the case. I think all that means is that for all intents and purposes, Ullrich still maintains the services of the rest of the team, but he doesn't expect Kloeden to contribute to his cause when he has a strong shot at the podium. I think it all played out today just like the comments from the article implied. Ullrich was still definitely trying to make something of what's left of his tour, while Kloeden was free to do what he needed to do. Kloeden though, is still very loyal to Ullrich, as evidenced by the fact that he took up the pace in an attempt to set up the final sprint for Ullrich.

BTW, did anybody notice the call Ligget and Sherwen made during the final climb about the gear Armstrong was using compared to the rest of the leaders? The cameras just had a passing shot of some of the bikes, and one of them commented how Lance was using his biggest gear, while the others were using their smallest, making Lance more ready to explode toward the finish. Then, whaddaya know? He does just that. BTW, the strategy and maneuvering in the final kilometer for Armstrong were perfect, once again.
