UEFA Champions League (Official Thread)

Well, they may not have deserved it, following a dreadful first half, but United take a 3-2 lead back to Old Trafford. 3 away goals will be very hard for AC Milan to overcome. Any win, draw or 2 to 1 or 1 to nil loss, will see United through to the semis. Real are in a spot of bother after a lackluster result away to Lyon. Real will have to score and hold Lyon scoreless or win by 2 to get it done. Tomorrow's games should be just as interesting.

The semis...assuming a bit much since they haven't even reached the quarters yet, aren't we? :wink2:

Man Utd. are lucky to escape 3-2 away from home thanks to goals from Paul Scholes and a couple headers from Wayne Rooney. Milan scored their second goal in the dying minutes of the game through Clarence Seedorf to throw themselves a lifeline. That coupled with the sending off of Michael Carrick would certainly take some luster of a historic win for Man utd, who have never won before at the San Siro. The win also extends Man Utd's record to 16 games undefeated away from home in Europe.

Meanwhile, Lyon have themselves an important lead going to the Bernabeu in three weeks thanks to an awesome strike from Jean Makoun. Importantly, Lyon's defense held Real Madrid's super expensive strikers goalless.

Milan just got Arsenal'd. They completely outplayed their opponents, but failed to finish their chances and ultimately lost thanks to shaky defending and goalkeeping. No way they get a 2 goal win at Old Trafford, that series is over.

Lyon @ Madrid should be very interesting, however.

Well maybe just a bit. If you look at the remaining games, you have to figure both Italian teams are going to be out after the round of 16. So that puts Chelsea and United into the quarters. Given the state of affairs in North London, baring a miracle Arsenal are going down to Porto. The Bayern v Fiorentina is a tough one to call, but without Adrian Mutu, I think Munich get through. I see Bordeaux and Barca getting through along with Sevilla. That only leaves Lyon or Real Madrid. I think Lyon will get it done. Say a 2-1 loss at the Bernabeu. Through on away goals. In the quarters, if United avoid Chelsea and Barca, I would have to say welcome to the semis. There is so much still to go, but faith is a must.

Whatever. Just cause Liverpool is out you shouldn't go around all mad. Or are you a fan of the Bolshevik's? I mean it's hard to support the Russian Revolution. Or are you mad that your team from the North of London are almost 3 best in the capital.

I think a lot of people are underestimating the Italian sides...Milan outplayed ManU for most of that game, and in general the Italians can be good in these types of competitions...I think the other 2 have a good chance.

I am also keeping an eye on the Europa league...some good international matchups there as well (and I'm a Fulham fan).

Agreed. Fiorentina topped their group which included the likes of Lyon (that leads Real Madrid in the first round of 16) and Liverpool. Also, Bayern haven't been the dominant force in Europe that they were a few years ago....a surprise isn't out of the question. The bookmakers favor Bayern & Porto at home to win today.

However, Inter have been drawn with Chelsea....which is gonna be tough for the Italian team, and even though AC Milan outplayed Man Utd., they have a mountain to climb at Old Trafford.

Chelsea has been very hit or miss with these things, so we'll see. I agree it will be tough, but much stranger things have happened. I agree that the away goal factor kills AC.

Bayern have really hit their stride recently in the Bundesliga while Fiorentina have been dreadful in Serie A. I suppose a lot of the time you need to forget about domestic results, but I just can't see Bayern not winning in Munich.

As for my beloved Gunners, we'll be using a stone-soup lineup tonight. Almunia is hurt, he'll be replaced by Fabianski (which should be an improvement.) Gallas is hurt, Sol Campbell will take his place. Denilson will replace the injured Song at CDM, and Arshavin and Eduardo are unavailable, so it'll be Nasri-Bendtner-Rosicky up top.

I honestly have no idea how good Porto are these days, but Arsenal have serious injury problems and are on the road. I'd look for them to lose 2-1 or draw 1-1, then win the series at the Emirates.

Oh yeah, Go Gunners!
