UEFA Champions League (Official Thread)

Liverpool added one more goal by Dossena very late to make the final 4-0. Real Madrid is eliminated again in the Round of 16. The commentators sounded like a some American CFB announcers stating "Speed Kills in this game, it seems like we've seen this outcome in the match with any EPL (English) team against Spanish or Italian sides" and the "Real Madrid didn't have the pace, does the question of playing week in and week out in La Liga have anything to do with it? Is the league that bad, without any pace?" paraphrased might I add, Kinda funny really.

Man U and Inter Milan play tomorrow, in Old Trafford, so... Man U should really slaughter, what with home field advantage and according to the commentators a serious pace or "EPL Speed" advantage.

But really, Inter played a really fine game at home to just hold Man U to a draw in the San Siro. Man U is really the better team in this match-up though Inter has had a great season in Serie A, but OT is a ridiculously hard place to play. Should be a good match.

At the Half:

Man Utd. 1 Inter Milan 0 United 1-0 on aggregate
Roma 1 Arsenal 0 Tied 1-1 on aggregate
Barcelona 4 Lyon 1 Barcelona 5-2 on aggregate
FC Porto 0 Ath. Madrid 0 Tied 2-2 on aggregate

It looks as if Barcelona is through. United still have 45 minutes to defend their goal, while Roma and Arsenal will be a tough affair, and Porto & Athletico need to get something started in this one. My man Vidic with the opener, United in the drivers seat. Lookin good for the Quintuple of Trophies at the Theatre of Dreams this year.

I think that this year has solidified the reign of English football as the best in Europe. Second year running that English teams make up half of the last 8 in the premier European Cup competition. If the draw goes perfectly no English teams will face each other and they will have the chance to make a complete sweep of the semis. Seeing as how I doubt that happens I do hope Liverpool and Chelsea face each other in the quarterfinlas. The way I hope the draw goes:

Liverpool v Chelsea
Barcelona v Bayern Munich
Manchester United v FC Porto ( revenge for Jose's last year)
Villireal v Arsenal

with the semis to be first 2 winners and the last 2 winners. I don't want to see Chelsea or Liverpool until the final. Not worried about Barcelona or Bayern as much.

You gotta believe it's gonna probably end up being Barcelona vs. Chelsea in the one semi-final after todays results. Barca are up 4-0 on aggregate and Chelsea are up 3-1 on aggregate with 3 enormous away goals.

On the other side you got Manchester United who virtually have to do what no English club has ever done and thats win a Champions League game at the Est?dio do Drag?o in Porto. They're tied on aggregate 2-2 but losing on the away goals rule after giving up a late minute goal to Mariano. Arsenal and Villarreal are tied 1-1 but the Gunners have the crucial away goal from a brilliant Emmanuel Adebayor bicycle kick in the 2nd half of the first leg.

So my two least favorite players (yes, because they're both very good, but, yes, because they both act like d-bags) squaring off today. Should be the Blues, but what can you do. I like ManU in this match, but I'd hate to see them go back-to-back. I guess I'm pulling for Barca? Ugh.

The one thing I like is that Fergie got two digs in regarding Real with Ron sitting two seats to his right Tuesday at the pre-game press conference (although Ron could/will have the last laugh if he decides to take off over the summer).

A little over two hours til the kick...

"That was not a defeat, that was an annihilation," - Real's 6-2 loss to Barca.

"We had to change our strip and our first two strips clashed, but we are very happy to be wearing white - very happy - and we are better than Madrid."

If you hate Man United clap your hands! If you hate Man United, hate Man United, hate Man United, clap your hands!

The first leg in the round of 16 starts today....

intriguing matchups....

Lyon at home v Real Madrid

AC Milan at home v Man Utd. (Interestingly, David Beckham may be starting for Milan against his former club)
