University of Cincinnati talk (split from Matt James thread)

usage The plural criteria has been used as a singular for over half a century <let me now return to the third criteria ? R. M. Nixon> <that really is the criteria ? Bert Lance>. Many of our examples, like the two foregoing, are taken from speech. But singular criteria is not uncommon in edited prose, and its use both in speech and writing seems to be increasing. Only time will tell whether it will reach the unquestioned acceptability of agenda.

I am just on the cutting edge of language.

I don't get it, where's the dick joke?

[ORD_Buckeye] Guys, there is no need to run Cincinnati down.

Cincy is a great university that is ranked higher than Ohio State in some categories, albeit not many. Sure, Ohio State is much more highly ranked in the US News and World Report survey as a 1st tier school ranked just outside the top 50 but in Faculty Scholarly Productivity in research in 2007 Cincy was ranked #51 and Ohio State only #97 (link).

Cincy celebrated their 50th birthday the year before Ohio State opened. they have a long and rich tradition. And who can beat that close proximity to the beautiful Ohio River? And Gene Kelley dance steps?

Really, it's enough. I'll sue. I'm serious. [/ORD_Buckeye]

Admitting to making the same mistakes as Nixon? That also helps. :tongue2:

There are varying opinions on its usage. I guess I'm more of a traditionalist.

I decided to divert the conversation because I was tired of reading about the academic dick-swinging. Steve19 just did it in a much better may.

The offseason is just too freaking long.

USAGE: Criteria, the plural of criterion, is not acceptable as a singular noun: this criterion is not valid; these criteria are not valid.

Usage Note: Like the analogous etymological plurals agenda and data, criteria is widely used as a singular form. Unlike them, however, it is not yet acceptable in that use.
