USC can forget about winning it all now

I do not agree with Mark May on his statement about USC having the greatest offense until they prove it against a formidable defense (OSU, UT, hell even Va Tech.) They have an incredible offense, but I think their defense is quite porous. I believe they lost either 4 or 5 of their key defensive players at the end of last year, and one of their defensive players got hurt last week. I think ASU will win simply because the game is being played in AZ. I hope that they don't lose though, so we can be the giant killers.

um, I'm the last person to defend Mark May, but he said one of the best if not the best offenses of all time. Seems like a slight paraphrase to me.

What is the argument that this isn't an incredible offense? Is it too early to conclude, sure, but I doubt there have been much bigger routs against average teams.

I hate Mark May, but this should not be what makes people upset.

What should make people upset is that USC is predicted to score 40 points per game, despite failing to do so many times last year against meager teams that almost beat them (Stanford, UCLA, Oregon St, Cal = okay at best in my book)

Cal is back? Back to what? Cal has beaten Illinois and Washington ... this should be cause for concern for the Trojans?

Nobody is going to confuse the current Illinois team for the 2001 squad, and in the last three years Washington has won a grand total of 8 games -- 4 of those were against Indiana, Idaho, San Jose State, and Idaho (again).

Well, I wasn't trying to say they don't have a great offense. I was just saying that if I was a Trojan fan, I wouldn't want this idiot on my bandwagon. I like my team's chances better if he's saying they stink.

Is it premature to bring this one back? It's only been a week and a half since Mark disMay's initial proclamation and they're already struggling to put points on the board against ASU. I suppose they could score 4 TD's in the 4th quarter but right now they look pretty ordinary trailing 21-17 in the 3rd.

First, Cal isn't "back" because they've haven't fallen. Cal went 10-2 last year and barely lost to USC, at USC...they also are the last team to beat USC (in 2003), and also lost to USC in 2002 by only two points. To put it simply, they are the team to give the Trojans to most trouble over the last few years. This year, they have an explosive offense (40.2 ppg) and a very good defense (10.6 ppg).
