While reporters constructed their stories Saturday night, a work crew disassembled the 7-year-old Value City Arena court for the last time and fit together a shiny new one, which will feature an outline of the state of Ohio in a darker shade of stain at midcourt. Former Buckeyes guard Jay Burson was there to oversee the installation. He works for Horner Sports Flooring, which manufactured the new floor. It will make its debut on Thursday night when the Ohio State women’s team plays Virginia Commonwealth. A photo of the new court is at dispatch.com/hoops.

I snapped this photo with my phone as I was leaving Value City Arena on Saturday night after writing about the Buckeyes' loss to Kansas. While I was working, an arena work crew removed the old floor, square by square, and installed the new one, a process that took about three hours.

The first game on the new floor will be Thursday night, when the Ohio State women's team plays Virginia Commonwealth. The men next play Saturday against Chicago State.

Really like the shaded state of Ohio part!

It's a beautiful arena with all of the bells & whistles, but the atmosphere usually sucks compared to the old barn. 13,000 in St. John was a full house and students were nearest the floor in the bleachers. 13,000 in VCA is about two-thirds full. It's like an NBA arena in Milwaukee, but without the continuous piped-in music. You hear every step the players take, and conversations going on in the crowd.

As a recruit, there are plenty of other places creating a more exciting experience. A trip to VCA would put me to sleep most nights if I wasn't a rabid Buckeye fan.

This is what happens when you try to build a multipurpose arena. The same thing happened up in Cleveland when they built the Richfield Coliseum. It is very difficult to play basketball and get a good atmosphere in a building where hockey can be played also. It is never going to change so we might as well all get over it.

I understand what you're saying and don't entirely disagree. With that said, I really enjoyed seeing the NCAA prelims in the Nationwide Arena a couple years ago. Very nice place to see a game (though with no real ability to generate home-court advantage).

I have not been in both venues for basketball so do not know but is Nationwide a better venue to watch basketball games than the Schott
