Walsh vs. Ohio State 7 PM Tonight

Sounds like DT will by far lead the team in scoring, and there will be a host of players who provide points behind him (ST, Q, Rav, AC, Scott, Zelle and Amir). Two things of interest that I pointed out before to watch were the starters. Matta had Q and Amir start the first half and Sam and Rav start the second. I guess he hasn't really decided who to start. But he did bring Sam, Rav and Shannon in during the first substitution, so I do expect him to go 8-deep this year regularly, and Trey will probably get some important minutes on an irregular basis due (whenever foul trouble strikes in the post).

Looks like you read my mind...

2 things from the box score stand out to me.

Thomas 1 for 6 from 3. He loves him some 3 pointers even though he not that good at shooting them (about average).

Amir Williams did not score much, but he had 5 blocks in 14 minutes. He will certainly not be anywhere near the offensive threat of Sullinger, but he will be much more of a defensive prescience.

So he's going to know what the offensive players are going to do before they do it?

Scott had a few nice plays, but didn't have the A/TO ratio that you would like to see from your PG in a game like this against a lesser opponent. Overall the team had 12 turnovers and 12 assists, which is not very good against a lesser team like Walsh, though you can chalk a few up to playing ADV and Trey, which is probably not going to happen a lot against the better teams. Rebounding was even between the two teams, which is another not so good thing. 3-point shooting was mediocre overall last season (although they shot well from 3 in a number of big games where the rotation was cut down), and once again it was not very good (5-19).

Amir is a lot better shotblocker than Jared, and harder to score over, but let's be honest - Jared was a lot better rebounder and keeping the opponent from getting second chances is a big part of good defense, and he was able to get his hands on a good number of steals as well. It wouldn't be completely irrational to compare Amir to DLaud.

They have a long way to go, but there's plenty of time and opportunity for this team to find it's stride and play championship basketball. The offense is going to take a while to come around - this is a big change from focusing on throwing the ball inside to Sully and running plays for jumpers for WB. The good news is Matta is a great coach who will get his team playing their best at the right time of year and there's a lot of talent for him to work with.

DVR'd the replay on BTN and watched it last night. I am excited for this season. The team seemed to play well together, even if they were a bit rusty. I think this team has the potential to be better than last years if everyone stays healthy.

Walsh is a solid team, very fundamentally sound from what I saw. I think this was a very good tune up game for the Buckeyes.

I also watched it last night, in between answering the door to bribe the neighborhood's little terrorists with candy. :pissed:

My major concern is finding a consistent secondary scoring threat to complement Thomas.

Smith provided that he can score in bunches, but can he do it consistently?
Can Ross be good enough on defense to give him enough minutes to do his thing on offense?
Can Craft & Scott knock down enough jumpers to keep the defenses honest?
How many alley-oops can they throw to Sam Thompson each game?
Will Williams & Ravenal combine to average double figures?

These questions?and many others?will be answered in the next episode of...Soap
