Way Too Early 2020 Polls

2020-2021 Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: May Version

It’s becoming a bigger topic of conversation as the college football world tries to figure out how the 2020 season might be able to be somewhat normal – will there be bowl games?

The timing – will there be a changed up schedule that goes into mid-to-late December?

The travel – how will fans be able to travel to neutral site games, and how will bowls be able to sell tickets?

The bowl ties – what happens if some conferences go off like normal and some don’t?

It’ll all shake out over the coming weeks and months, but for now, here’s our May version of how this all might look several months from now. We’ll do this again after all of our team previews are finished, with a deeper dive on each possible matchup.

Preseason Top 25: No. 2 Ohio State has expectations beyond another College Football Playoff berth

Ryan Day's first season at Ohio State went rather well. Day took over following the unexpected resignation of Urban Meyer and led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten championship and a College Football Playoff berth. Ohio State was also tantalizingly close to playing for the title but fell short against Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl, losing 29-23.

How will things look in Year 2 under Day? You could argue that he stepped into an envious position at Ohio State with a ready-made program already equipped to compete for national titles. What's his plan for an encore, and what should the expectations be for Ohio State in 2020? It has one of the best quarterbacks in the country returning but loses a lot of key players from last year's Big Ten champions.

Let's take a closer look.

All of which is why it's difficult for me to have too many concerns about Ohio State heading into 2020. Yes, it has a lot of key players to replace at pivotal positions. But it's Ohio State, and it's had those problems before. It also has a QB in Fields who might be the best Ohio State's ever had take the field. He's one hell of an ace in the hole that can help overcome possible deficiencies elsewhere.

Plus, while Ohio State has questions, so does everybody else in the Big Ten and in the country. Few are as capable of answering them as easily as Ohio State can. Frankly, anything short of a Big Ten title and a playoff berth for this team in 2020 should be considered a disaster.

Just sayin': Very good detailed analysis.

On Tuesday, 247Sports released its preseason top 25 rankings and Ohio State sits at the top, ranked No. 1 by our experts of college football writers.

The remaining top five teams in 247Sports' preseason rankings come as no surprises. Clemson, who defeated the Buckeyes in the Playoff semifinal last year, is at No. 2. Despite missing the Playoff a year ago, Alabama is expected to bounce back at No. 3. Georgia joins the Crimson Tide out of the SEC at No. 4 and Penn State rounds out the top teams at No. 5.

Penn State? Am I missing something?

They were 5th in rushing defense last year, 8th in scoring defense. Some people are making a lot of these facts, and that they have some key pieces returning.

Lost in all this is that they were 34th in total defense, 41st in pass defense (rating), and 100th in pass defense (yardage).

That sounds like a Gary Blackney defense to me, if I'm remembering his name right. OSU DC in the late 80s. Good rushing defense. Fair to bad pass defense. Good for 3 losses a year. Not top 5 material.

247 says, "the Nittany Lions are going to be fine defensively thanks to a mix of elite recruiting and linebacker Micah Parsons". Last four 247 rankings for the Pedsters: #15, with no 5* (2020); #12, with one 5* (2019); #6, with three 5* (2018); #15, with no 5* (2017). Having three out of four years outside the top 10 in team rankings, with a grand total of one 5* recruit among those three years--along with zero classes in the top 5--does not equate to "elite recruiting". For shits and giggles, here are the four 5* recruits they have over the last four cycles:

2019: Brandon Smith, LB (So) - played in all 13 games last year, and had 14 tackles and 0 sacks.
2018: Micah Parsons, LB (Jr) - played in all 13 games last year, and had 109 tackles and 5 sacks. Was 2019 B1G Linebacker of the Year (first-ever sophomore to win it, and was an AP 1stTeam All-American.
2018: Justin Shorter, WR (Jr) - played in 10 games last year, and had 10 catches and 0 TDs.
2018: Ricky Slade, RB (Jr) - played in 12 games last years, and 214 yards on 47 carries (4.6 ypc) and 2 rushing TDs. He also had 12 receptions for 105 yards (8.8 ypr).

So, they have a world-class LB and three OK players out of their four 5* recruits.

Under the heading Our Call, Lindey’s wrote: “Ohio State has that gleam in its eye. Yes, the Buckeyes have accomplished a lot in recent years, but not at the end of the season lately. They haven’t won a playoff game since winning it all in 2014. Don’t underestimate that hunger, which will be fueled by some of the best talent in America. And is there a better coaching staff? Bottom line: Ohio State has the look of a national champion.”

Fields is joined by two of his OSU teammates on Lindy’s All-American first team with offensive lineman Wyatt Davis and cornerback Shaun Wade. Second team picks include offensive linemen Josh Myers and Thayer Munford.
