West Virginia 76, Ohio State 48 (Final)

One thing that distressed me greatly in this game was Jon Diebler's horrible decision making. This was supposed to be a strength for a coach's kid, but doesn't currently seem to be the case. Really bad passes, pushing pace when caution was called for and pulling up when he should have accelerated.

Hope this is an aberration.

Larry used be one of my favorite players but since he is no longer planning he is no longer one of my favorites:(. I just don't understand how he can make a statement like that.

My father-in-law played with and against Bob and Larry back in their high school days. He raves about what an intelligent and well-rounded player Larry was. Says Bob was kind of a jerk back then. I suggested maybe not much had changed.

Just imagining how good our team could be with one other player...senior PG, Mike Conley.

And he'd only be a junior. :p

It serves as a good wake up call before Big 10

Right on. They had these games last year, too. (Butler, aTM). Learn from it and move on.

after Ohio State went up 8-3 and WV called a timeout it was just a mess from there on

If I recall, WVU was man-to-man up to that point and went zone the rest of the game. OSU is playing terribly against zone defenses this year.

I don't hate the zone defense OSU plays, but it's exasperating to watch when there's no alternative to it. WVU just tore it apart, especially in the 2nd half, and there was nothing OSU could do about it. It's the frustrating part about only playing one defense. The opponent knows exactly what is coming and can game plan against it without any worries about OSU switching away from it. Even a couple minutes of man-to-man or a different style of zone would at least make them think once in awhile.

I was extremely disappointed, not in the loss, but in the effort in the 2nd half. I'm not much for saying a team quit, but, as many have already noted, the effort was pretty poor and the execution was worse. I've been frustrated with the offense all season, but that was as bad as I've seen an OSU team play under Matta.

the father was a good hs coach. everyone knows bob wanted the osu job. he put his name in the hat and had multiple contacts to get involved in the process. so in obama talk osu is just a guy in his neighborhood... :wink2:

hes gone, and he was a first rounder. thats the standard in my book. lottery pick you should go. thats the way the cookie crumbles.

i would have bagged the team. taken their jerseys from them and ran them till they puked. but maybe let it rot is better sometimes..

blame the zone some. blame poor effort. unwililngness to rebound. blah blah samethings over and over and over...

One statement that I did not understand was why is there no alternative to the zone:huh: I mean these kids did play man-to-man in high school. I know this is college but they have to learn sometime and I would rather go down fighting. I would also like to see this team pushed the ball up the court a little quicker as I have said an almost every game thread and Kellogg said it a few times on TV Saturday.

Agree, for once:), with your bolded statements.

I hope you're right about "learning experience" but they better learn pretty fast with their January schedule or things will get pretty ugly.

Of course man-to-man is an alternative...it's just not much of an alternative when Matta won't ever switch to it.
Every opponent knows exactly what defense OSU is going to play, because it is the only defense they've played last year and this year.

how can you push the ball if you cant rebound? you cant. hard to push the ball after a made basket. rebounding and turnovers lead to transition. i didnt see much rebounding, and what 11 turnovers all game? how many of those were deadball rebounds.

and you have to look at depth. at this point how deep is this team?

i say learning experience, i mean i hope it was. and i also say it so didnt blow off in a rant.

blow off in a rant.
I am very close but would probably get a suspension and then you wouldn't be able to read my brilliant posts:biggrin:

I agree regarding player depth and pushing the ball. I guess I have been watching too much UNC because they push the ball after everything. Maybe that is also why Matta doesn't ever switch to man-to-man because the little guys might get tired:(.

I'd like to think that they don't ever really get to the alternative man to man defense because, given the string of early departures, the team hasn't had an opportunity to fully master either defense. when and if these guys are all together in their junior and senior seasons, I'd be willing to gather they would include other looks, so they can have a successful alternative..

just a thought.

just not enough easy basket opportunitities.

The 2-2-1 press has become token pressure without Lighty. I'm hammering it to death, but it's 100% true. Lighty is a helluva athlete to set up traps at mid-court and drop back to cover the baseline.

The fact that their pressure is now token, reduces the number of easy buckets and a transition game. They are going to have become very good in a half-court set, something they've struggled with the last 2 years.
