West Virginia/JUCO/C.W. Post/Kean RB Jason Gwaltney (official thread)

gobucks19 - You don't have the rules limiting a HC's in-home visits quite right. The HC is limited to ONE "off-campus" (off the university's campus) visit to a recruit. The NCAA bylaws don't mention "in-home" because that is just another variation of an off-campus visit. The HC can meet the recruit at the recruit's school, at the recruit's home, someplace else or all three. But regardless of the number of locations, they must occur on the same day. If you meet the recruit at a restaurant on one day and at his home on another day, that counts as two visits and is a violation. There are provisions for "incidental" or "accidental" contact, but that is not supposed to be intentional and certainly does not rise to the level of a visit. As an example, if JT is at the mall and happens to see a recruit, he can say hello; but he shouldn't turn that contact into a pitch. BTW assistant coaches can visit a recruit up to six times. And no matter how many assistants visit the recruit on a particular day, that counts as only one visit. Hope this helps clarify a confusing area or recruiting.

As the O line goes, so goes the running back.

Antonio Pittman, Eric Haw, and Maurice Wells will be great as long as the O line blocks for them. All three have great burst, great vision, and once in the open field can run away from tacklers. I was very impressed with Tony Pittman when he was on the field this past season.

Gwaltney would be great, and it would be in his best interests to go to Ohio State, but it's hard to argue against USC. He can go there and sit for a few years (no way that White AND Bush are coming out early) and be on a winner or he can come to Ohio State, play VERY early and be on a winner.

Either way we'll know in a week.

Superb post, Hiny. It's impossible to put into words exactly how rich tOSU football tradition is. But a picture's worth a thousand words, as they say, and you've done a great job of capturing the electricity of the program.

If Jason sees your post, he should know that those pictures capture only the tiniest tip of the iceberg. We could include a thousand pages of pictures and not tell the whole story. Jason's life would be on cruise control to greatness if he made the smart choice and picked tOSU.

And Navy, thanks for clarifying the recruiting visits stuff. Makes sense and is good to know.

Williams' attitude paying dividends (Jason Gwaltney at bottom) - Charleston Daily Mail

... LAST WEEKEND, I attended the U. S. Army All-American Bowl, featuring 80 of the top high school football players in the nation. Among those playing in the game for the East squad was coveted running back Jason Gwaltney from North Babylon, N.Y.

Gwaltney, who is considering West Virginia, Ohio State and Southern California after earlier committing to the Mountaineers, earned high praise during practice from East assistant coach Terry Smith.

Smith, a former Penn State wide receiver who is also the head coach at Gateway High School near Pittsburgh, said, "Jason is a great north-and-south runner. He has deceptive speed to run outside. He has the desire and toughness to run inside. He would rather run through you than be shifty and go around you."

After watching Gwaltney in practice, it is easy to see why he is a top priority for the Mountaineer coaching staff. He has a chance to be a dominant back in the Big East Conference.

He only stands about 5-foot-10, but he keeps a low center of gravity and leverage to his advantage. For a strong, thick back, he also displayed great vision and cutback ability...

Handing the ball to the ref? Are you sure he isn't already commited to Ohio State? He certainly sounds like the team player / class act we're used to.

Those are great pictures. The Brutus running with the flag was my wallpaper on Nellis AFB. The Iowa and Wisconsin fan were haters and unfortunately had something to hold over my head this year.

Rumor has it that a miscommunication occurred, and both Pete Carroll and Jim Tressel showed up at Jason Gwaltney’s house at the same time this afternoon. Seeing an opportunity to go head-to-head with his chief rival, neither coach deferred to the other, and both debated the relative merits of their respective schools with Jason and his family as their audience.

Petey won the coin toss, and chose to go on offense first:

PC: We won a National Championship last year! We beat Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl!

JT: We won eight games last year, but we did beat Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl. However, we won an NC back in 2002....

PC: Yeah, right before the first of our back-to-back championships.

After trading field position on their opening drives, USC connects on a long pass, setting up a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead. After a stalled OSU drive, the Trojans regain possession and immediately go to work on the reeling Buckeye “D”:

PC: If you come to USC, you can go surfing in Malibu!

JT: If you come to Ohio State, you can go cross-country skiing in the Metro Parks.

PC: When you come to USC, don’t forget your sun screen!

JT: When you come to Ohio State, don’t forget your Chapstick.

PC: Surf’s up!

Touchdown, USC! Ohio State simply has no answer for USC’s quick-strike ability. At the end of the first quarter, USC leads Ohio State, 10-0. As usual, JT’s offense is stuck in neutral, but uncharacteristically, the defense has not yet come to play. USC gets the ball back, and presses on relentlessly:

PC: After home games, we party in Hollywood!

JT: After home games, we sing Carmen Ohio.

Ohio State’s woes continue in the second quarter, as USC scores another easy touchdown, building a seemingly insurmountable 17-0 lead. However, Slick Pete made his first mistake on the very next drive:

PC: If you come to USC, you can be the next O.J. Simpson ... oops, I mean Marcus Allen!

Interception, USC. First and 10, Ohio State! But the Buckeyes could not take advantage of their good fortune:

JT: If you come to Ohio State, you can be the next Maurice Clarett ... oops, I mean Eddie George!

Fumble, Ohio State. First and 10, USC! With only seconds remaining in the half, USC sits on the ball and is satisfied to go into the locker room with lots of confidence and a 17-point lead. However, JT and the boys regrouped at half-time, and began a torrid third-quarter comeback after Petey went for the jugular on USC’s opening drive in the third quarter:

PC: You’re my Number One Guy!

JT: Fred Davis was Petey’s Number One Guy last year and look what that got him....

Interception, USC! Ohio State returns the errant pass for a touchdown, cutting the Trojans’ lead to 17-7. On the very next play, USC falters again:

PC: But really, you’d make a great back for the Trojans!

JT: He means line-back-er....

Fumble, USC! Ohio State recovers deep in USC territory, setting up a chip shot field goal which cuts the deficit to 17-10. The Trojans are on the ropes, and the Petey’s magic seems to be wearing off:

PC: I’m serious now, if you come to USC, I’ll scrap my high-tech offense and run the good old-fashioned “I”!

JT: We already run the “I”. If you come to Ohio State, I’ll let you dot the “I”.

Even a Pop Warner player could read that ill-advised pass into triple coverage, which Ohio State easily picked off. With momentum now firmly on their side, the Buckeyes’ offense was able to march down the field for another three points. At the end of the third quarter, USC still leads, but only narrowly, 17-13. The fourth quarter was setting up to be another classic battle of gridiron titans ...

PC: USC has great tradition, we have several national championships and Heisman Trophy winners ...

JT: Ohio State has great tradition, we have several national championships and Heisman Trophy winners ....

PC: ... and we send a lot of players to the NFL ...

JT: ... and we send a lot of players to the NFL ....

PC: ... and we have great academics ...

JT: ... and we have great academics ...

During the fourth quarter, both teams went conservative, using the punt extensively in a battle of field position. But JT is the master of special teams ....

PC: ... but the best thing is, you can play as a true freshman!

JT: Oh, really? What about Reggie Bush, LenDale White, and Hershel Dennis? Are you going to red-shirt those guys in favor of Jason? Actually, at Ohio State, we’re losing three running backs, and have only one returning back with any game experience, and he’s not a “big” back like the kind we favor in the Big Ten. With your power running style, you’d be a perfect fit in our offense ...

With under a minute to play, OSU blocks the USC punt, and falls on the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown!

PC: But really, honestly, truly, scout’s honor, cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye, you’re my Number One guy!

JT: You tried that line already....

With only seconds left to play, USC throws a desperate Hail Mary, which falls short, giving the Buckeyes an amazing come from behind victory, 20-17 Go Bucks ! ! !
