Maybe I moved to the mountains to find God.
I found he was everywhere.
You had me at "prostitutes getting far more popular." say no more. Where do I sign up?
What would change would be the protests over certain things such as abortion and other arguments where one side seems to be dominantly centered and based upon religious beliefs. I'm sure it would change the war landscape as currently exists because a lot of, but not all of, those seem to be based at the root of religion. Certainly wars are based off of actions but those actions are currently looked at through a telescope of a belief system as to whether those actions are right and just.
I'm equally curious how so many people could follow along. Is it because it just makes life easier? Good men and women practice religion but do you have to be religious to be good? If there is a God, does anyone think he would punish someone for just not knowing the answers to life's greatest mystery? I believe in doing what is right and I have definitely "sinned" in my lifetime.
@Fungo Squiggly thinks you're a fucking idiot.
I believe he was riffing on your agnosticism and his take/joke that being agnostic means being exempt from prosecution due to being unable to distinguish right from wrong to gauge your interest in doing a "dirty deed done dirt cheap" for him. Not sure he's considered the potential rubber room outcome for an agnostic dirty deed doer, but you probably should.
Cart before the horse/chicken before the egg....it is much more successfully argued that ethics preceded morals. You don't need to be terrified of the volcano god to understand it is bad ju-ju to steal from your neighbor.are you high again...?
one potential "minor" issue with that. as the popularity rises.... so do the prices.. :(
probably a rim shot in there somewhere...
to a degree i think. there would certainly be fewer people who would protest those things sure. but i suspect there would still be a large % of people who would still do so. there was an episode of brain games i want to say it was recently that touched on this a little bit. they tested reactions to certain things for believers of various faiths and non believers. it was interesting how similar their reactions were. for example they tried to bribe the individuals to lie about their favorite color by offering them money. same for fav food and so forth. then they asked them to claim their beliefs on religion were different than they actually were. even offering them thousands of dollars. i can't recall anyone taking them up on it including the athiests. they did something similar with music and imagery. they all had very similar reactions to pretty much everything. which makes me think that even people who don't believe in god are still very much influenced by the religion in their day to day lives without actually realizing it. which does stand to reason. even if you were to somehow prove that god doesn't exist. cultural and societal norms likely aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
ive always wondered about this as well. it actually seems human nature for the majority of persons to be followers. which makes sense, you almost have to have far more followers than you have leaders. one little bit of anecdotal evidence is i enjoy parking my car or truck away from the entrance of a public place away from everyone. if you wait a few hours and come back there will almost certainly be cars parked all around yours even if the parking lot is practically empty and no matter how far away you parked from the entrance. its like some people "need" to be lead which i have never understood.
as i can't currently think of any society that was devoid of religion. is that somehow part of the mix here? is it our intelligence working against us? how could we be here doing all these things and there not be a point? a master plan of some sort? which feeds back into a need to be led to a degree.
well, seeing as how your fungo squiggly and everyone else here including myself.... in think... *ponders*... it seems to be a popular opinion
correct and.... terrifyingly correct...
"are you high, again?" Martin
The Lord Speaks to Elijah at Horeb
… He said, "Go forth and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD was passing by!
