I think this poll is evidence of where so much of the confusion and emotion is coming from tonight...as a fan base, we really misjudged things, and we need to recalibrate so we don't miss how good and special this team still is.

A privilege at OSU is getting to have such high expectations year in and year out. But nearly 67% of people predicting an undefeated season? Going undefeated is a rare, special feat that I think we may underappreciate. Even teams that "should have" gone undefeated catch an unlucky break here or there and lose a game.

Today was clearly more than that, but even so, something to keep in mind for future seasons. A team like 2002 that actually accomplishes a perfect season is the stuff of lifelong memories, and there is a reason why.

The thing is...this team was returning more starters and senior talent than just about ANY other team in CFB history. For a team that did so well the previous season to return this many starters is rare. It looked set up for a special year.

Overall, though, I agree with your assessment. I said earlier, perhaps we were fooling ourselves all offseason. Yes, expectations are always high, but as a fanbase we seemed to be pushing them higher and higher, even though we continue to get served humble pie.

Of 241 voters, 63.90% thought OSU would go undefeated?????

I'm shocked that more than 50% of Buckeye fans thought OSU would beat USC, much less every other team they have to play. OSU is awesome, just like my LSU... but I would never, never vote for my team to finish undefeated, even if we were a Big Ten team, unless I thought we were as loaded as those mid-2000s USC teams or those early 2000s Miami teams -- where everybody off the team went to NFL. OSU isn't like that. LSU isn't like that either. You'd have to be a fool to expect OSU to go undefeated, just like you'd have to be a fool to ever expect LSU to go undefeated (we haven't done it since the late 50's, when we had one of the great squads in all of college football history).

It's also interesting to see that the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry has lost its luster, with only less than 4% of Buckeyes thinking that beating Michigan is all that matters. Granted, that's because Michigan doesn't pose much of a threat anymore. But really, that's all a rival is--someone that poses a serious threat.

OSU went undefeated twice in 5 years, and were returning their most experienced team yet. It's not hard to understand why homers were hoping there'd be a third undefeated run.

The bowl game wasn't going to be in 2008 anyway

I couldn't care less if TSUN doesn't win another game till they face us. That's the game I want most every year. The rest is just a bonus. I'd be willing to bet that no matter what a poll on BP says, most Buckeyes feel the same...not all, but most.

If Beanie's injury lingers all season and JT continues to play around with the QBs I'm afraid we could finish 9-3 and headed to the Citrus Bowl. Road games at Wisconsin and Illinois have been problems in the past and PSU usually plays us very tough.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out but I'm also tempering my expectations until I see some improvement.

No offense Jake, but fuck that. 12-1.

Rose Bowl bound. I want Oregon.

I agree, this is very possible. Boeckman has experience against Illinois, Wisconsin, and Penn State which are going to be our three biggest challenges. If Boeckman plays decent and Pryor gets thrown in the mix some, I think our chances are pretty good. A Rose Bowl seems very obtainable, a lot of that depends on how the QB's play though.

parallel universe

Last weekend I flew home from the worst football game of my life trying to be optimistic. We have the best recruits at critical positions, Pryor did look good for a few snaps and even went 7 of 9 with no t/o's, and at least I had a non-stop 1st class flight home.

But then the flight could not touchdown on Sunday due to wind, and my home and business were without f%&#&n' electricity, and I haven't been sold on Jim Bollman's abilities yet. The stock markets crash and my home still has no power. I am living in a dark parallel universe like in Silent Hill.

But still, I think, Pryor, Posey, Shugarts, Adams, Brewster, C. Wells, Rose, Lil Animal, Freeman, Wilson, Robo, .... Could the national talent scouts be that wrong? My answer No.

You heard it here, we're going to be fine. TB simply has to lead or get out of the way. I predict we win the Big Ten again. Fortunately our schedule is heavier at the end. Our new linemen and QB will be finding there way by then. Plus, our defense is geared toward cold games against Big Ten opponents.

Great post. I think most of us are still bitter about the loss. For once I am actually going to give up my C deck tickets (this week). I am suffering from a little Buckeye fatigue and need to do a reset. I don't know if that makes me a bad fan but after going to 2 nat'l champ games and witnessing the massacre on the tele, I need to recharge.

Illinois and Wisconsin will be our toughest tests and I think we will drop one of those so as of now I predict a two loss season going to a BCS bowl.

Got to agree with you on teh Illinois & Wisconsin being a tough test, especially Wisconsin. Tressel has a lossing record against them.
