Where is the best place to see the Rocky Mountains

It could be very tough getting the flight you want because of the summer and the airline problems. You can fly into Bozeman Mt. as a gateway to
Yellowstone. But, being summer, it will be very crowded. Like most of the large parks will. But, if you got the money to spend you can probably get anywhere you want.

In the US, Estes Park, Colorado, just on the outside of Rocky Mountain National Park.

I'd recommend the Canadian Rockies and Banff over the American Rockies though.

+1 on both of these. Banff and Lake Louise are gorgeous. In Colorado, Rocky Mtn. National Park/Estes Park are very scenic.

Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons are also excellent spots.

Personally, I'd rank Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana below the others I've mentioned.

Remember that the altitude means that there's much less oxygen is in the air.

Honestly, in Canada. I mean, they have more and higher mountains and less people.

I used to take 4th of July trips to Canada when I lived in Washington State. A hell of a lot less crowded when you were looking for a good campsite that weekend.

Ok so let's say I want to fly into colorado and spend a day or two and then drive north up through montana and then fly back or maybe drive on up to Banff and fly back, kinda like a tour thing with a day here and two days here .
colorado springs or estes and the trails up through Montana and Banff all sound interesting. But i don't want to drive a thousand miles. that's no vacation.
So I could maybe take a train to Kansas city and see some relatives then fly to Denver? or the Springs and stay a day or so and then rent a car ? to head north up into montana. How far is that?
Denver to Billings = 525
Billings to Helena = 280
Helena to Banff = 500
and in all seriousness.. which I hate to be serious...
have hear Banff is phenom

oh BTW... 1300 miles / 20 mpg = 650 gallons of gas X $4/gallon = $2600 plus the car

I sure hope you didn't learn how to divide at Ohio State:

bump for more stuff.
travel tips are welcome too.
Train or bus through Kansas City? or west out of Chicago.
Or maybe fly to albequerque or Colorado springs?
Or maybe another destination??
Does Montana have an airport? :wink2:
Is Wyoming near the rockies?
I like the drive idea north from NM and the what NFBuck says about the springs area.
And Scripts link made a couple drives appealing.
hell I just might go up through them all

Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs would be a great place to see the mountains. It's about 14,000 ft to the top. You can drive to the top or take a train (cog railroad). Be prepared to be a little light headed when you get there. If it's a clear day you can see the Shoe! I lived in Pueblo for a year and made the trip up PP a few times. There's also Estes Park near Boulder. The drive through Rocky Mountain National park would put you in some the most spectacular scenery. Then there's Vail. In the summer it should be a good drive, but later in the fall the weather may close a few roads.

Fly to Denver and drive to Springs, It's only about an hour ride.

I have also taken the train from Toledo to Kansas. At the time, Amtrak didn't go to Colorado Springs but it was a slow ride to western Kansas where I deboarded and drove the balance. If you like to take in the scenery and aren't in a hurry, the train may be something to consider. Have fun.

I would suggest Glacier National Park in northern MT.

I believe it connects to Banff in Canada?

The view from Montana is fantastic. You can't miss in Colorado, Montana and other viewpoints.

If you want to see something truly different, go the the Air Force Academy and see the campus and the Rocky Mountains.
Great stuff!

Thanks for all the info guys. we are booked to fly into Colorado Springs on 8/11.
Now I need more local tips within a days drive in addition to the ones I have seen in here.
Pike's peak
Rocky mountain nat'l park.
Air Force Academy . ? wth?
Cave of the Winds
Garden of the Gods

We would be interested in Scenery, Mountains ( from say 40 miles out and up close and personal),and Wild game.

And on the sly for me , wild naked drunken hawt babe mud or jello wrasslin.
