where is the 1996 team??

70, 72, 29, 38, 17, 42, 38, 45, 48, 27, 9, 20

i think everybody is writing them off just b/c of that 9 point clunker against scUM, but the offense in general was ridiculous
Joe Montgomery (averaged like 7 yards a carry) getting injured against Minnesota and being inside the 10 three times and not scoring a TD against scUM puts them behind 1995 and 1998. The 1996 offense was outstanding the first 4 games and 8 of the 9 games to start season. Offensively, the Penn State game was a thing of beauty. Notre Dame shoud have been worse. That offense struggled the last three games. I believe the offense only scored one TD against Indiana and had problems moving the ball against scUM and Arizona State.

because they made every 'must have' play, without fail. while '02 was maybe not the greatest offense in terms of scoring, (though before MoC got injured they were darn near a juggernaut, scoring at a 38.7 PPG clip through the first half of the season,) when they absolutely HAD to make a play, they did.
It's not a list of the most clutch offenses in OSU history, it's a list of the best overall offenses in OSU history. While the '02 offense certainly had the talent with Krenzel, Clarett, Jenkins, Vance, Gamble, Hartstock, etc., they were far too inconsistent as far as production goes to be deemed one of the best in the history of the football program.

I voted for the '98, mostly because of the scUM and Texas A&M wins

My Vote:
1995- Best Offense
Hoying 3269 yds passing
Glenn 1411 yds rec
George 1927 yds rushing

Poor defense has a lot to do with the "anemic" 23 pts against UM.
Four turnovers killed the Bucks against Peyton Manning and the Vols

you are preaching to the choir. i merely stated a reason that 2002 could be included on the list. before MoC went down, they averaged 38.7 PPG which ranks right up there with the all time greats at Ohio State. after the Wiscy game they averaged barely over 20 PPG... still a 29 PPG average on the season is not bad. if MoC hadn't gotten hurt who knows what could have happened.

as it stands, i don't think i can pick which was the greatest.

Helll, when Archie was there, unless they were playing scUM or scUM ST, they would be up by at least that many points (38.7) by halftime! How many yards would Archie have put up if he would have played more than one or two series in the second halves of almost all of his games?

I voted for '98. That offense was disgusting at times. '95 was pretty good as well. I'm not sure this year's (2006) will be able to hang with either of those. I still wonder what we'd look like w/ Holmes staying for his senior year, but I obviously understand that he'll get drafted higher this year than next, and that he has a family to care for.

CRAP! I don't remember who taught me how to read, but that person obviously didn't do his/her job. I thought it was about the best OSU defense ever. I picked 1973. But I don't know much about that offense, and would not have picked it.

If I got a do-over, I'd pick 1998.

Clutch offense, maybe. Among the best in history in terms of production...not even close. Here are the offensive points scored during regulation in the last half of the 2002 season:

Wisconsin: 19
Penn State: 6
Minnesota: 34
Purdue: 10
Illinois: 16
Michigan: 14
Miami: 17

The offense failed to crack 20 points in regulation in all but one game, and averaged 16.6 ppg. Having an outstanding defense keep you in the game despite your offensive ineptitude until you finally make your clutch play does not constitute a good offense, let alone one that should be considered among the school's all-time best. In fact, during the second half of 2002, the offense should be considered among the school's all-time worst.
