White Sox 2006 season thread

Hey fellow Sox fans, I've got to say my hopes are not high for this season as a whole. We've dealt our most promising young arm. He'd shown quite a penchant for being an effective starter. I really hope this move looks more like Danny Darwin, Alex Fernandez, and Wilson Alvarez for Keith Foulke and Bobby Howry than George Bell for Sammy Sosa.

Enjoy Mark Buehrle in a Sox uniform this first half of the season, it's quite possible it's his last. Buehrle's love for the Cards is well documented, and he's a FA this season. He has signed an extension with us before, but it seems the relationship's worsened a bit since last he re-upped. He'll go win 20 games in STL for Dave Duncan.

It's my firm hope that BA makes enough offensive strides to get an every day job in CF. He's a very good CF, and if he is playing with Erstad and Dye on his sides, it'll be quite a fantastic defensive OF. Plus, it'll get Peter Pan Podsednik off the field. Speaking of which: since Gload is gone... do we break camp with another OF? Ryan Sweeney time?

I know there's no backup plan in place aside from a 22 year old Pedro Lopez... but I really wish Juan Uribe wouldn't show up for camp. He's a black hole in the lineup, and though he's made strides defensively he's still not great. I'm all about the Pedro Lopez show... it appears the brass is ready to rebuild anyway (at least I think). I mean... cutting 10 mil+ and not replacing it, and IMO getting ready to do it either in the middle of the season or during the next offseason (Crede, Dye, Buehrle, Thome all coming up to the end of their deals I believe).

Pitching staff: I was definitely in favor of getting one of our starters out of the rotation, I just wasn't sure which one. I'm pretty sure that of the 5 White Sox starters that threw last year for most of the year, 3 of them will have better years and 2 will probably be the same/worse. Any and all are capable of doing either. Gotta think Contreras is the one most capable of straightening it out. He's the one with the star studded history... and he's still not Rocket Old or Randy Old. Freddy lost a few MPH, but he's gritty, he's a gamer, and he's a pitcher. When he ain't got it, he still figures out ways to get guys out. He definitely didn't have it more than he had it last year though. Buehrle clearly had his worst year ever. Jonny G always worries me--his sinker seems like it'll always be inconsistant. I was personally most interested in moving Vazquez. He's got the best stuff of the World Champion pitchers, IMO... he just hits the 5th inning wall.

Bullpen: I don't know. Having hard throwers are great, but 95-100 does not = outs. There are going to be very few change of pace guys out of our pen now... and if a team locks in we could be in for a long night/series. It's not as if we gave up anything great for him, but I'm not sure that Andrew Sisco is the answer. Big Arm? Big deal. 82 BB in 133.2 IP. His BAA v. Lefties is .318, and his WHIP is over 2. Isn't that why we got rid of Neal Cotts? Aardsma had a great 2nd half, and I'm happy enough for that trade.

I am pretty excited about the stable of arms the Sox have, but I've been excited for Heath Phillips for a while and he's still not even gotten cup of coffee. The list is long. Gavin Floyd and Jon Danks are the ones we've just acquired, but we'd already had a logjam. Lance Broadway, Heath Phillips, Corwin Malone (2003? AA PoTY), Kris Honel (remember this name? drafted outta HS the same year as Prior... his ETA was 2007), Charlie Haeger.

Last and not least there's Ozzie Guillen: will he be able to put up with all of this? This team seems to be a ticking time bomb, and he's at the center. I think there's a good chance Ozzie walks away from the manager job and there's always the possibility he gets fired for saying something we can't justify keeping him after.

.

He patented the "let the other team bat around in the 5th" approach last season:biggrin: He threw some awesome early innings though.
