Why does NONE of this surprise me!

cleve....that equals out to 952.33 per month.....and they get a nice stipend to travel to the bowl game and are allowed to then make their own travel arrangements and pocket the difference....

sounds like all in all they get about 1k per month with zero school expenses...free food....

certainly not rich, but able to survive.....

edit: damn you guys are fast....wow...i'll be catching my short bus now.....

My current rent on campus, right in the heart of campus, for a 2 bedroom apartment is 360 a piece (720 total).
Our bills are less than 100, meaning cable, road runner, gas, electric, water, etc..
I spend maybe 250 a month total on food, including groceries and going out to eat.
That comes to a total of 710. Meaning they are pocketing 240 a month.
That comes out to plenty of beer/clothes/video game money.
I would kill for an extra 240 a month.

Dude you are so off...where are you getting this BS!

Room, board, and meals is $2857 per quarter. They also get an allowance for misc expenses like travel. If it is anything like some of the other varsity teams at OSU, they also get some cash before they go on a trip for food.

The quarter is less than 3 months long. 11 weeks actually, including finals week. Do the math.

Oh yea, they also do not pay for books. That saves a good $300-400 a quarter.

They also get some meals at the WHAC.

It all adds up, and it's a lot more than 850 per month. When all is said and done they're clearing a nice chunk of change.

I will see if I can get a copy of one of my buddy's old checks.
They DO NOT get an allowance for miscellaneous expenses "like travel"...AND they DON'T get CA$H before road trips for food. Meals are provided by the team on the road. The only cash they EVER get is per-diem at Bowl Games!

"They also get some meals at the WHAC."

Meals are NOT served at the WHAC! LOL! HAVE YOU EVER BEEN THERE? DIDN'T KNOW WE HAD A CAFETERIA IN THE WHAC? I HAVE TO LAUGH AT YOUR INFORMATION!

If he is paying 700 in rent and utilities, he is either renting an unbelievable place or is taking up multiple bedrooms. Or running the heat all day with the windows open.

If you can't live on $940 a month (plus free books, free meals at the WHAC, and more) you don't know how to budget worth a shit. Any house off campus is had for no more than $500 a month with utilities. The houses most of those guys live in are no more than $400-450. You don't pay for books. You don't pay for half your meals. Hell, they used to get free beer every night at the Spot before they tore that down too.

Just got confirmation from a current player via the phone. Checks are $940/month.

I then asked about rent, utilities, food, gas, and other expenses. Basically, you're out of money towards the end of the month!

He pays about $700/month in rent and once all the utility bills are paid. The "left-overs" goes to paying his cell phone bill (these can vary), car (gas, up-keep, payments?, insurance) and food (to pay for two meals a day and all meals on Saturday's and Sundays)! Seriously this is barely enough. The $1,350 Cleve Buck was quoting (by the way...totally off dude!) is fair in IMO! I wouldn't be bitching about that!

So there it is...the FACTS. $940/month...barely enough IMO!

Maybe the football team doesn't hand out cash per se like most of the other varsity teams, but either way they are getting it taken care of. And they are getting meals somewhere, whether it's the WHAC or somewhere else. We would all get food from my buddy every day after practice.

You get ONE meal a day during the week. All other meals are on your own!

Look I've lived that life (albeit ten yrs ago)...and after the check was gone there wasn't much left come the last week of the month. I had my parents (one of the lucky ones) who sent me $200/month for food and miscellaneous stuff and that carried me over!

$940 a month, with all school expenses paid, and that's not enough? First, a $700 a month apartment for himself seems quite extravagant. Looking through the ads posted in an earlier link, it would seem that he could get a nice 2BR place to share with a roomie for $800 a month (or a tad less). That's $400 a month for him, leaving $540 to cover transportation (a lot of kids have a car in high school and could take it to college), supplemental food, and other miscellaneous expenses. And that's if he's not working during the off-season...if he works, then that's even more money.

you know whats sad are these numbers in respect to the numbers we are discussing here tonight (great discussion too....great input from all)...

2002 numbers:

Ohio State Football took in $38 million more than it spent
85 Scholarship Players
that is $447,058 brought in by each scholarship player per year and...
that equals $37,254 brought in per month by each scholarship player
each player receives $954 per month

wow

When you live by yourself things are more expensive...mainly rent! It is smarter to "bunk up" but some people don't like to live with others. I did both. This player pays about mid 500's in rent and the utilities push it up to $700. I've looked before and singles are in the 500-600 range. You can get a nice double for 700-800.

That's what I'm talking about...also I remember a Wisconsin FB did a research paper on this back in my time and he figured what the scholarship players received in free tuition board etc and the amount of time they spent in their football related activities...factored it all in and came up with a fact that they were making less than minimum wage. By they way he got a "high" grade on the paper!

To me, living alone while in college is somewhat of a luxury...if one chooses to have their own place, then one has little room to complain about the lack of coinage. Getting a nice double for $700 ($350 per two) gives you $590 a month from the $940 to spend. Granted, utilities can sap some of that if they aren't included in the rent, but with two folks sharing the expenses and being even just a little bit frugal, you could keep them to about $100 a month on average. That still leaves you just short of $500 a month for food and other stuff. If this person eats his one meal during the weekdays, that's quite a bit saved off expenses (plus, I'd imagine the "doggy bag" action happens quite a bit, for the next day's lunch). With some planning and a little fiscal discipline, one can get by fairly well on a full scholarship.

i can understand hyan, but ask any college kid at osu if hed tkae 940 bucks and the answer would be hell yeah. i still think the numbers are low you guys are throwing out for expenses, but it should be enough to make ends meet. the 850 was from a guy who plays at a little bit smaller program not in a big city. i hate to say it but this is a case of spoiled S-As though, these kids do not have the oppurtunity to work part time jobs. football is 20 hours of team stuff, plus all the 'optional' things.

i see both sides of this issue and they both have validity

an no regular kid lives in a dorm by themselves

College student here, I would love 940 dollars.
The numbers I have thrown out are exactly what most any tOSU student is experiencing, since I am one.

Alan you also have to compare this to any grad student.
Ohio State research is a big money buisness,
However you dont see grad studnets get big time stipends on a $20 million dollar research grant.

$954 a month is plenty, hell its more than enough.
If these kids cant budget like all my friends and I have, then I have no sympathy for them.
