Why It Is So Frustrating Being a Buckeye Fan

So there you have it. The Buckeyes are very good - maybe even the best - when it comes to getting close ... but they very bad - maybe even the worst - when it comes to making it all the way to the top.
I think that this sentence probably really sums it up for all Buckeye fans. It is so hard to accept the fact that you can get so close so many times and not seal the deal. In a way, we are spoiled because our favorite team wins so much that we expect them to win every time out and that just cannot happen for various reasons.

The sad thing about it is, that most of the time, the players and coaches have left it all out on the field and we still feel bad when we should not because we know that they have given their best.

On a side note LJB, you have gone with some real losers over the years:wink2:

At least we're not UGA or Texas fans! I could only imagine how pissed everyone on this board would be if we beat scUM at a neutral site and they were voted to the NC, instead of us! There's a ton of more team that are mroe frusterated than us. My buddy is from Hampton, VA and is a UVA and VA Tech fan imagine his misery everyyear his team wins an extremely weak conference and then loses in the BCS bowl game! At least we get recognized nationally whether people hate us or love us. And lastly at least we're Notre Dame fans!!!

.... why on earth are there frustrated buck fans?? because we are back to back to back to back big 10 champs (1st ever btw)? with 5 big 10 champ yrs out of 8? because jt is 7-1 against scum? because we have won 5 straight against the scummers (never been done before)? because in the jt era we have been to 3 nc games winning 1? because we are going to our 6th bcs bowl under jt?

at no point in tOSU's history have we seen this type of success under any coach not named woody. if this is frustrating, PLEASE GOD LET ME BE FRUSTRATED WITH tOSU FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!

not even in 2004 was i frustrated with tOSU. guess that makes me a bad fan *shrug*.

Wow. Really well written, loads of research! Bit of a downer though. Just venting it out so it doesn't fester over the off season?

ill admit im only hours out of surgery and possibly still under the affects of medication. but why is tOSU's history such a downer?

The history itself is outstanding. So was the work put into the piece, as I said. It's not the history, it's the general tone of the article. It explores a lot of very frustrating parts of Buckyeye history, and frustration itself is a downer. No attack was intended.

because we've choked away more national championship opportunities than those other schools even dream of getting. those other schools make good on their championship opportunities. we squander them, take them for granted, and don't do them justice... which is where some of the ESPN/national hate comes from. no team has done less with more when it comes to winning titles.

and it sucks.

I hesitate to bring this up....but......your research and the results that show some evidence of - call it....underachieving -could be an explanation for the bias you all feel toward the Bucks by the media and other fan bases. Perhaps....perhaps it is an opinion formed by their observing the same failures, the same inability to close the deal over so many years.

I guess I am saying that one hypothetical explanation for the "bias" is that third parties have in some sense processed the same stats that Jeff so meticulously compiled and have come up with an opinion that is unfavorable as it relates to your ability to close the deal. Everyone loves dotting the i, TBDBITL, your history, etc....but you get less than you think you deserve insofar as respect for our team's ability to win. Maybe there is a correlation.

I do not mean to offend anybody by this, but as someone growing up in non-Big 10 territory, I did not follow you much at all, and what I did seem to remember is how you would seem to lose to either Michigan or the PAc 10 Rose Bowl Rep every year. Now, I know that you did not lose every year. I am not even saying that my recollection is factually correct. I am just saying that to the extent I thought about an "image" I had of Ohio State regarding football, it was that you always had good teams that lost at the end of the year. That was not my "bias", as I had no real interest in big 10 football at all. Perhaps I picked it up from the sports broadcasts where they said "It happened again" after The Game or a Rose Bowl. It was admittedly not a marginally informed view, as I did not follow your seasons closely or at all, nor did I have a vivid memory of your many impressive wins.

Again, as Jeff is being down right honest here, I shared what was my non-interested impression of the program that I had in the 70s through the 90s. Perhaps the Cooper years and the recent three big disappointment games have given you a rep that is worse than it should be. But it is also just possible that the bias is not as arbitrary as it seems when you break it down like Jeff did.

I do know this. Beat Texas and come out smoking with TP next year and who knows what will happen. The whole image thing is so short term memory related it is amusing. Win a MNC or big bowl game and it is forgotten. Forget the past losses, you are about to have three years of outstanding successes that should wipe clean the bias of even the most jaded fan. After all, Florida is hardly a long term success. "Wait till next year!" was our cry. That changed in just two decades. Now we get the benefit of the doubt because we stepped up big in big games recently.

The fix starts with Texas.

I totally agree with Martinss01, in that we as Buckeye fans have nothing to be frusterated about! Everyone's on here crying, and need to act like some adults(I want to call everyone something else but I'll refrain), we have a team that is the envy of MANY other college football team! We've defeated our rivals soundly for the past couple of years and we consistently get to BCS bowl games and have one of the best athletic facilities in the nation! And Oklahoma and Notre Dame has laid far more eggs than we have in BCS games, and given time I could produce even more! Stop being so bitter and enjoy that we are Buckeye fans and not fans of teams like Iowa, Louisville or UCLA! We're a perennial powerhouse and our fans cry about going to bowl games every year, BCS games at that! I went to a D1AA school and could only dream of seeing my school team in a bowl game let alone a BCS one! This was a retarded thread!!!

It's easy for us Buckeye fans to forget that the rest of the world doesn't look at Ohio State like we do. In that respect, I'd say there is some merit to Gator's point here.

After all, we - as Ohio State fans - can with the greatest of ease make light of Miami of Florida not knowing the first thing about long term tradition... that they were a nobody for a LONG time... but... to them we "just don't get it"

Well, I saw the post title and was ready to jump on whoever the thread starter was (how could you be frustrated?! we're the best! :p)...then I realized it was one of Jeff's (as usual) outstanding pieces.

So very very true, really, when we take a step back and realize what our history has been the last 40 years.

Nothing, at all(!), to be ashamed of, but it is something to be frustrated about. Definitely a distinction between the two.

Good analysis Jeff!
