  • Here's a question....

    I've never seen Windows Update completely fail to install anything.

    I had to do a repair reinstall over the weekend but in doing that, Winblows uninstalls any and all updates.

    Now when I connect to Windows Update, it downloads the updates and fails to initiate the installs. After a couple minutes I am told all of them fail.

    Stupid Windows :smash: :grr::pissed::mad1:

    Any ideas? I guess I could completely rebuild the machine but I'm hoping someone smarter than I am has an idea.....

    I've never experienced that issue to the degree you've described it. At my old job, for some reason, my laptop wouldn't install a security (IE) update for some reason. My admin didn't know why it wouldn't. We just sort of chalked it up to being a rare error.

    As for you, you might try downloading the updates one at a time and see if that works better for you. I would also check out the MS knowledge base and do a few searches based on your error messages. You could even try to google those errors.

    I tried the one at a time thing this morning actually. But it didn't work. :(

    You can hedge against crashes and losing data, but hardware failure happens. I don?t know how anyone gets by with a computer without multiple hard drives or even multiple computers to keep duplicate copies of stuff you don?t want to lose. That?s assuming you aren?t running some type of RAID set at home. Your average user with a Dell POS at home with one HD and little technical knowledge besides opening IE is probably going to have their computer die on them at some point. We just found a guy in the office today that did even know how to restart his computer. I end up reinstalling Windows on most of my computers around once a year. My computer downstairs that is connected to my TV might be the exception since I don?t use it for anything except for watching stuff I download.

    Its all about regular backups and keeping stupid shit off your hard drive.

    With my old PC, I did a full system restore once a year for performance purposes. Never due to failures or errors.

    My new PC (as of February) with Vista is in great shape.

    What I hate is the fact that my company gives me a brand new Core 2 Duo laptop with 1 GB of RAM and it takes fucking 2 minutes to load up because of all the damn corporate security software and other shit they got running on it. Other than that, it's light and fast. Can't quite hang with the Macbook at home but it's nice to have two laptops handy.
