Wilson to officially announce his transfer to Wisconsin later today.

And now we're seeing articles popping up everywhere saying Wiscy is now the favorite to win the Big Ten. I'm not seeing it. Wilson certainly doesn't hurt them (most likely) but I think he's still a downgrade from Tolzien.

Wilson's 2010 numbers vs. the ACC weren't out-of-this-world great, not for a three year starter playing for a guy who's coached six ACC first-team QBs in his 19 years in the ACC. When you look at the success O'Brien's had with QBs over the years, you almost wonder if Wilson wasn't as much a product of the system as The Savior of Wisconsin.

I'm not terribly impressed by Wilson's passing, first off. He threw 17 TDs to 11 INTs in the ACC last year while facing defenses averaging about middle of the D1A pack. He didn't go a single ACC game without throwing a pick, even against some truly bad passing defenses. That doesn't make me too scared of his arm or his decision-making skills.

He averaged 2.98 yards rushing in the ACC last year, amassing 289 yards on 93 carries. Again, nothing overwhelming, especially when you consider he only faced three rush defenses in the top 25 and he only broke 50 yards against one of them (#21 Maryland).

I think Wilson is certainly an upgrade over what they had in Madison, but he has to mesh with the team, learn the system/terminology and get accustomed to a new conference. Overall, I'm happy we're playing them in the first 1/3 of the season.

Wisky will simplify what he does. They ask their QB's to sell the play-action. Be smart with the ball and don't turn it over. The rest they put on their Oline & RB's.

Wilson isn't the best decision maker and can be sloppy with the ball. However that doesnt mean he can't be effective in that system. Especially with his ability to pick up yardage on his own. Give the coaches some time to work with him and it could be a very interesting union of skill set & scheme.

Nebraska doesn't get Wisconsin in the first 1/3 of the season. That aside, your team is playing Wisconsin in Madison, which is a huge disadvantage--getting a QB in a new system on the road is ideal.

It's not exactly the first 1/3 of the season. The numbers don't match by .024% - so I rounded.

If we need to be precise, we could say "within the first 35.71% of our season." But I don't think we need that level of precision, do we?

EDIT-
I'm just going to leave my math stupidity up there for posterity. Underlined for your pleasure.

The above numbers problems aside (no wonder Nebraska was kicked out of the AAU :tongue2:), you're looking at the wrong schedule. If the subject is the Wilson's degree of comfort with the Wisconsin system, as a new QB, you should be looking at Wisconsin's schedule and how many games he has under his belt, not at Nebraska's. The game against Nebraska is Wisconsin's 5th game of the season, so you're getting him in the first 42% (rounding up) part of the season.

You're not counting the Conference Championship Game, thus throwing off your math.

And mentioning Nebraska's recent troubles. Classy. Stay gold, Pony Boy.

In terms of a potential medical hardship waiver (aka "medical redshirt") year down the line for somebody, the NCAA rules allow players to participate in the first 30% of the season, rounded up, and still be eligible for another full year of football if they have a season-ending injury in the first half of the season. So making the CCG (and a bowl game) would mean that game 5 would still be in the first 30% of the season for those purposes. Refer to NCAA bylaw 14.2.4.3.6. which was revised in April, 2008.

.30 times 14 = 4,2 games, which would get rounded up to 5.

So from one perspective, game 5 would not only be in the first 33.33%, it would actually be in the "first 30%" of the season.

So "all of the sudden", your math isn't as bad as my improper use of an idiom in this sentence. :wink2:
