Wisconsin Badgers (Official Thread)

Since 2000, Wiscy has had three 4-Star QB recruits besides Mertz, who was the highest 4-star among them.

2008 class - Curt Phillips: threw 95 passes for 577 yards in 10 games in 2012-13 with 5 TDS and 4 picks

2012 class - Bart Houston: threw 192 passes for 1540 yards in 26 games from 2013-16 with 9 TDs and 5 picks. He had 5 starts in 2016, including wins in the Lambeau opener against LSU and the Cotton Bowl win over Western Michigan.

2014 class - D.J. Gillins: never played there, transferred to JuCo and ended up at UTSA
Houston was the guy I was thinking of. I remember them hyping him and him not doing much of anything. Forgot about the other two, though I do remember Phillips now.

I don't think you can pin this on Mertz.
FG went 0/2.
Cundiff fumbled in the RZ.
OLine with holding every other play.
Wisconsin has an identity -- that RT got worked over today.
They looked great in the 2nd quarter, I figured they'd come out after the half and just run it down their throats and score 40 points. My feed got cut early on in the 3rd so I don't know what exactly happened.

Life comes at you fast. Losing to the Buckeyes is one thing, but getting pantsed against freaking Illinois and Bert is disgraceful

Chryst, 56, finishes 67-26 in seven-plus seasons at Wisconsin, his alma mater. He won 10 games or more in four of his first five seasons with the Badgers, winning a Cotton Bowl and and Orange Bowl, and three Big Ten West Division titles. But the program fell off beginning in 2020, going 4-3, before a slow start to the 2021 season.

According to Chryst's contract, Wisconsin will owe him $16.4 million if he's fired without cause, although a different settlement could be negotiated.

And just why would Chryst agree to something less?

B1G dream jobs at your alma mater.....

Frost at Corn: fired
Cryst at Cheese: fired
Fitzgerald at Nurd U: 4-13 over the past 2 seasons

Some people think good things happen in 3s, do you think Fitzgerald could be next?

and

Harbaugh at scUM: wanted to leave, but no NFL team wanted him....

I think Northwestern knows that they got a HC who wants to be there, and they can’t do better. Fitz is probably good for a long while, especially since he was just in the B1G title game a few years ago.

Leonhard
Makes sense to do it now. Leonhard would have been a hot candidate after the year. Now you can see what he's like and agree to a contract if you want
Exactly, he could lose several more games and not be damaged. The expectations are low for 2022 now.

I also don't think they would have let Chryst go mid-season without Leonhard being on staff.

Makes sense if you want to try Leonard out.

Personally I'm not convinced they have a significantly higher ceiling than what Chryst brought. The problem was not having a QB that can hit a 10 yd out route to complement the run game.

That falls on Chryst, but the next time Wisconsin consistently recruits and develops above average QBs (Wilson doesn't count) will be the first.
