WR Dan Potokar (official thread) - post #93 fund details

Dan Potokar Update

Latest from Dan's CarePage.

March 24, 2008 at 12:21 PM EDT
Hi All,

Once again on behalf of Dan's family, thank you for your support and encouragement. It is much needed and appreciated!

Dan and his family had the consultation at Indiana University on Thursday. Much to our dismay, he will indeed need the treatment at IU as they have learned that his type of cancer is highly resistant to chemo. He does in fact have numerous lesions in his lungs and the best and only option is for Dan to proceed with this treatment.

Dan will be heading to IU on Sunday evening, his 21st birthday. Not a great way to spend a birthday! He will be in Indiana pretty much full time for the next 7 weeks or so. He will be staying on campus, rather than at the hospital; he will be admitted to the hospital if necessary. The procedure is quite involved; it will occur in two complete cycles. So once he completes cycle 1, he will get about an 8 day break, then return to IU to repeat the process.

My explanation is simply an attempt at conveying to you all what I know...bottom line is, Dan is seriously in for an intense battle; the last procedure pales in comparison to what lies ahead. Emotionally, Dan is holding strong. I am sure he is scared and frustrated, but he is digging deep to embrace that strength that makes him the Dan that we know and love.

Many of you have graciously offered your support in various ways. Because Dan is a OSU football player, he and his entire family are linked to the rules and regulations of the NCAA. I had to ask you all to hold off a bit in order for Ohio State Football to receive the proper information and documentation from the NCAA compliance office. We now have the go-ahead from the NCAA; By the way, OSU Football has been amazing! Puts a whole new meaning on the slogan "Go Bucks!"

The NCAA is allowing us to open an account in Dan's name that will be managed by Ohio State. [No other account is allowed based on NCAA rules.] It will be managed by Amy Burgess, Supervisor of Internal Relations, OSU Athletic Office, and all distributions for expenses for Danny's treatment will be handled by Amy. Thank you Amy!!! So, if anyone wants to contribute, you may send a check to:

Amy Burgess
Ohio State Football, WHAC
53 Irving Schottenstein Dr
Columbus, Ohio 43210

Please write Dan Potokar on the check so that the money is allocated properly. Please note that this is not a foundation so it is not considered a charitable contribution on your taxes.

For people who have contacted me to conduct fund raising, meals, and other service needs, I have a NCAA form we need to fill out prior to starting these activities. The form is simple and I can help you with it. All monies raised on Dan's behalf have to be deposited into the OSU account noted above. The good news is: you don't need a form to pray :). Just pray!!!

Thank you again for all of your help and for your concern. It is so needed. I will be in touch with all of you who have written to me thus far to get things moving.

Take care, and please know how grateful we are for each and every card, email, posting, contribution, and prayer!

Do not hesisitate to call me or email me with any questions or concerns. My cell is 513-265-4573; my email is [email protected].

Thank you,

Suzanne Thomas

Potokar preparing to undergo more treatments

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 3:11 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Dan Potokar's optimism did not last long. Cancer can be like that.
A few weeks ago, the Ohio State receiver was hopeful that the chemotherapy treatments he had been enduring for several months were wiping out the testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and abdomen.
But it turns out that his particular form of cancer is rare and resistant to chemo, and doctors have discovered lesions remaining on his lungs. It is not the same type of cancer that cyclist Lance Armstrong defeated.
So Potokar and his mother, Nannette, are currently in Indiana. They will live on the Indiana University campus in Indianapolis for the next six to eight weeks as he prepares to undergo a much more intensive treatment at the IU hospital.
He turns 21 on Saturday.

BOWL-A-THON FOR DANNY POTOKAR

April 26, 2008 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m.
Grove City Lanes
3940 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio 43123

Dan Potokar, a 21-year old Ohio State University football player and Grove City High School Alumni was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer on December 3, 2007 following an illness that would not retreat. His initial treatment, conducted in Columbus, consisted of surgery and chemotherapy. Since this treatment did not remove the cancer that had spread to his lungs, he and his parents have temporarily relocated to Indiana University where Dan is currently undergoing stem cell/chemotherapy treatments. This procedure to treat Dan's cancer is extremely risky. The emotional and financial impact this procedure will have on the entire Potokar family can not be emphasized enough.

To help the Potokar family with financial expenses, a Bowl-A-Thon is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th from 12 noon until 4 P.M.

The number of games you bowl will depend on how many bowlers are willing to participate.

We will contact you prior to the Bowl-A-Thon to let you know how many games you will be bowling and what time you will be bowling.

Please contact either Terri Ehmann or Danielle Ratcliffe before April 16th if you plan to bowl (see contact information below). If you have a team of 5 bowlers, please provide the name of each bowler when you contact us so we can place all bowlers on the same team.

To participate in the Bowl-A-Thon, we are asking each bowler to obtain pledges from friends, family members, co-workers, etc. prior to the event.

People can pledge a flat amount (i.e. $5.00, $10.00, $25.00, etc.) OR
People may pledge so much per pin (i.e., if you bowl a 150 and someone pledges 5 cents per pin, they would owe you $7.50; if you bowl a 130 and someone pledges 10 cents per pin, they would owe you $13.00). If you bowl more than one game and someone pledges an amount per pin, your highest bowling score will be used to determine the pledge.

Although not mandatory, we are asking each bowler to try to obtain pledges totaling over $100.00.

Please complete the attached pledge sheet and bring it with you to the Bowl-A-Thon. Our hope is that all pledge money is turned in the day of the Bowl-A-Thon, or no later than May 3rd.

In addition to the Bowl-A-Thon, we will be selling food and having a 50/50 raffle. Door prizes will be given away during the Bowl-A-Thon. As Dan is an OSU football player, all funds must be handled by OSU to comply with NCAA regulations; If paying by check, the check must be payable to The Ohio State University (write ?Dan Potokar? in the memo line of the check).

Please contact Terri Ehmann or Danielle Ratcliffe by May 3rd to turn in your money.
Terri Ehmann

614/216-7977 (cell)
[email protected]

Danielle Ratcliffe

[email protected]

WHEN ATTENDING THIS EVENT, DO NOT PARK BEHIND GROVE CITY LANES OR YOU WILL BE TOWED. PARKING IS AVAILABLE ACROSS THE STREET BEHIND BROADWAY DESIGN GROUP AND THE OLD FARMERS MARKET, AS WELL AS THE BACK PARKING SPACES BEHIND SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME.

Even if you decide not to bowl it would be a great opportunity for you to drop off a donation.

Update for Danny

Suzanne Thomas, Dannys' aunt has asked if everyone that has been supporting Danny could continue to pray for him. It is a very, very critical time for him – he is fighting for his life.

Yesterday, Danny received two transplants today of his own "cleaned up" stem cells and so far so good. The whole family believes it is only through prayer that Danny is still with us. He just completed a stage of chemo five times greater than what he went through in Columbus, she said that the Columbus round almost killed him so that is why they were so afraid of this HUGE round in Indianapolis.

Although this is good news, a very fierce battle is ahead. The next thirteen days will tell them if Danny’s organs will accept the cells or if they’ll be rejected. Pray for his organs to accept them and If by the power of God his body accepts them, he is looking at another round of transplants in the future.

Danny is very calm and his body is holding miraculously well, unlike that last time he went through chemo in Columbus. She said to tell everyone that they really, really feel the power of the buckeye prayers.

Danny’s family is with him in Indiana, and all are very much appreciative of everyone’s support. Please, continue to pray for Danny and his family in this extremely difficult time.

Thank you!

Helping Potokar

The support for cancer-stricken receiver Dan Potokar has been strong, school officials report. Several weeks ago, the university set up a fund to help the family defray costs.
Potokar is undergoing intensive chemotherapy in Indianapolis, and his parents Ed Potokar and Nannette Kinman are there with him.
Two fundraisers have been set up in Grove City, Potokar's hometown.
One is a bowl-a-thon set for April 26 at Grove City Lanes. Interested individuals or teams should contact Terry Ehmann at [email protected], 871-7977 (home) or 216-7977 (cell); or Danielle Ratcliffe at [email protected] or 599-9839.
The other is "Dining for Danny," a pizza buffet April 27 at Plank's on Broadway. For information, contact Mary Mulvany at [email protected] or 871-3466.

The latest update from the CarePages site:

Dear Friends,

Finally an update with good news!!!

Dan will be released from the IU hospital and heading back to Columbus tomorrow, April 23!! His tumor markers are down significantly and his white cell count is climbing steadily.

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, and a prayer of thanks, as it appears that as of today, the procedure is working.

Dan will return to IU in about 7 days for Cycle 2. While he is at home, he needs to concentrate on rebuilding his strength, both physically and mentally. His parents, Nannette and Ed, also need to regroup, as this has been particularly difficult on them as well.

The first of the fundraisers are occurring this weekend; members of Dan?s family will be at the events, but it is unlikely that Danny will be there. I know he wants to be there to see and thank all of you, but he is still extremely weak. I know you all understand?
