WR Grant Schwartz (official thread)

Duane Long

Duane is an Ohio guy. His knowledge of out of state guys is limited and his preference for Ohio guys is apparent. Here are some simple facts about Grant and about recruiting in general. Grant had 70 tackles as soph playing for Dana Hills HS. Historically and statistically one of the worst programs in the state of CA. He then was asked to switch to QB and give up most if not all of his defensive responsibilites. He lead his team to the playoffs last season for the first time in MANY years, breaking most school QB records along the way earning 2nd team All-league in a league that includes Mission Viejo HS which was given 20 of the 1st team all league nods even though Grant led the league in total offense. 1st team went to Mark Sanchez. He was ok I guess! LOL All of this creates an under the radar player as far as recruiting goes especially when you add the fact that he prefers to play defense and insisted on being recruited as a defensive player. In the last 8 months Grant's stock has risen dramatically and continues to. With top performances at Stanford Nike Camp where he was selected as one of the top DB's at the end of the day which raised eyebrows and awareness. Ohio State's camp and USC's camp which included two 4.33 hand timed 40's and two 4.41 SPARQ. Now EVERYONE knows who Grant is and the position of MANY teams has been, Wow! Let's see how the guy does begining of the season. He has dominated the competition but still sees limited time on defense. Even still, top schools such as tOSU, Oregon, Boise State along with Colorado State have seen enough already to offer and there are several Pac-Ten schools that will offer in the next couple weeks along with other top programs. If it's "stars" he wants, that to will be numbering 4 by the end of the season if not shortly thereafter. Enough said about that. Regarding next years possible crop. Is he joking? NO school does not take a player this year because of what players might be good or available next year unless said player is already offered and unofficially commited and even then, what are you crazy? I want as many GREAT players as I can stockpile. You think USC doesn't offer a guy cause of what COULD, POSSIBLY, MAYBE be available NEXT year? That's a joke. COMPETITION. You go after EVERY top player you can get. EVERY ONE, EVERY YEAR. If the player himself doesn't choose to come that's his perogative. I will not comment on Duane Long's possible "expertise" or 'knowledge" as it's of NO consequence. Last I heard, he's not getting paid to coach or recruit. And I'm sure he's well intentioned.

Nick Patterson and Anderson Russell figure into that safety mix, twenty...

Oh, I know. So does Donald Washington. However, Patterson hasn't played any meaningful time (only clean-up), and both Washington and Russell are unproven. Plus, both Wash and Russ are so athletic, if we get the talent, they COULD be used elsewhere (WR/CB and RB, respectively). Those open safety spots in the two deep HAVE to look good to a lot of potential recruits...

Right on, JDub

EDIT: ...and great post Laguna!

he's been told that many times, and he seems to ignore it and then a few posts later post "oh no more than 8 safeties" again. It's pretty obvious this kid is talented, gives us Cali roots for recruiting, and looks like a pretty good backup option at QB (esp if Henton's grades were to ever plummet, or if he didn't pan out).

i was the first to mention this very thing to duane over on BN. He kept reiterating "8 safeties" and I had to say at least 3 times that the top 4 of those 8 will be gone after next season. He didn't respond.

I know a lot of discussion early in the thread centered on Grant's prospects as a SS or similar. - But man, I look at some of those videos and think Joe Germaine - but with real wheels to fall back on.

The only reason I could for him to be constrained to Defensive Back would be if 6' - 0'' is his limit in height. Looking forward to hearing more good things about this young kid, as a Buckeye, regardless of which side of the ball is favored in his future.

<!--/UdmComment-->Toman leads Mission Viejo past Dana Hills

By K.J.M. SINGLETON
The Orange County Register

MISSION VIEJO – Welcome to the Toman Empire.

Mission Viejo senior quarterback R. J. Toman and the Diablos continued their brutish ways Friday night at Mission Viejo High, seizing a 40-8 South Coast League victory over Dana Hills.

Mission improved to 6-0; Dana Hills fell to 4-2.

It was the first South Coast League game for both teams.

Toman, who had the unenviable task of replacing everyone's All-American, quarterback Mark Sanchez (USC), this season threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more as Mission extended its winning streak to 42 in a row against teams from Orange County.

After a 68-yard return by Garrett Rubio on the opening kickoff, Toman ran 30 yards on the first play from scrimmage for a touchdown.

Toman (12 of 16 for 144 yards) connected on passes of 30, 7 and 12 yards for three touchdowns in the first half, and the Diablos entered halftime with a 34-0 lead.

His favorite target, senior receiver Sean Fitzgerald, had four catches for 76 yards, including touchdown receptions of 30 and 12 yards.

Senior running back Chane Moline (14 rushes for 88 yards) scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 4 yards.

Dana Hills quarterback Grant Schwartz (8 of 13 for 70 yards) left the game with about three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury. He was replaced by junior Clayton Colaw, who played the remainder of the game. Colaw passed for 100 yards on 12 of 18 passing.

The Dolphins' lone touchdown came with 3:44 left in the game on Matthew Garcia's 1-yard run.
