WR Galloway expected to miss Bears game

TAMPA ? Joey Galloway can walk, but running could make his foot sprain worse.
That's why the 36-year-old receiver is not expected to play Sunday at Chicago.
"It could make it worse if we were to do too much right now," he said. "We'll just have to let it quiet down a bit and then begin the rehab process."
Galloway made his first public comments Thursday since sustaining the right foot injury Sunday against the Falcons. "I'm walking now, which is definitely progress from where I was Monday," he said.

Injury UPDATES: WR Joey Galloway said his foot sprain is "better than last week" but declined to characterize his chances for playing against Green Bay and did not practice Thursday.
"That's Coach's call," he said. "You know the routine."
After missing Sunday's win that was marked by a franchise-high number of passing attempts, Galloway couldn't stop thinking about the irony.
"I joked with (Brian) Griese, and I joked with Coach that they wait until I'm out to throw the ball 67 times," Galloway said. "It's tough when you don't get a chance to play. I'm trying to get there as quickly as possible."

In print: Saturday, October 4, 2008

TAMPA ? WR Joey Galloway will miss his third consecutive game Sunday with a foot injury after he was ruled out against the Broncos.
Galloway was injured Sept. 14 against Atlanta. Indications are he hasn't shown much progress since. Also out this weekend is FB B.J. Askew, who has a severe hamstring injury sustained on Sept. 21 at Chicago. S Sabby Piscitelli (elbow) is listed as doubtful and likely won't play.

NFL Bucs The Beat

Bucs receiver Joey Galloway back on practice field but uncertain for Sunday against Panthers

Chris Harry | Sentinel Staff Writer October 10, 2008 Tampa Bay WR Joey Galloway returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday, but his status for Sunday, when the Buccaneers (3-2) host the front-running Carolina Panthers (4-1) in a key NFC South Division game, remains uncertain.

His return would bolster a lackluster passing attack that is averaging just 5.45 yards on a league-high 205 attempts. That's barely better than the 5.3 yards-per-carry the Bucs are averaging on the ground with the league's eighth-ranked rushing attack.Galloway has missed three straight games with a foot injury, but he was hardly the 2007 version in the two games he did play. After missing all of training camp, all four exhibition games and most of the preseason practices with a groin strain, Galloway caught just eight passes for 74 yards (9.3 per catch) before suffering the injury Week 2.

White Tiger Ready To Roar?

Bucs coach Jon Gruden delivered some encouraging news for Tampa Bay fans.
WR Joey Galloway practiced Thursday and might play against Seattle. Gruden said Galloway has a 50-50 chance, which is far more optimistic than the past few weeks.
"He's getting better," Gruden said.
Galloway (foot injury) has missed the past four games.

Healthy Galloway gets fewer chances with Buccaneers

By Rick Stroud, Times staff writer
In print: Sunday, November 16, 2008

Injuries are no longer keeping Joey Galloway off the field. Jon Gruden is.
More specifically, the Bucs coach has hitched his passing game to Antonio Bryant, who moved to Galloway's split end spot and leads the team with 45 catches for 566 yards and two touchdowns.
In his past three games, Bryant has 21 catches for 276 yards and two touchdowns.
Galloway, who turns 37 next week, has been moved to flanker. But he is having trouble breaking into the lineup there because of the improved play of Michael Clayton, the Bucs' third-leading receiver and a dynamic run blocker.
So what becomes of Galloway, who missed five games with a right foot sprain? Since returning, he has four catches for 50 yards.

Is Galloway's career going the fade route?

Wide receiver's role has been limited with emergence of Antonio Bryant

By Tom Balog

Joey Galloway, relegated to a backup role, has to be wondering what's happened to his once prime spot in the Tampa Bay offense.
Is his conspicuous absence from the game plan of late just happenstance, or a foreshadowing of the often-injured receiver, who turned 37 on Thursday, being phased out of Tampa Bay's offense?
The 14-year veteran has been a spot player with a significantly reduced role in the offense of late.
He has only four catches in the past three games, since returning from a stretch of five games being inactive with a foot injury.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Galloway says broken foot sidelined him

By Rick Stroud, Times Staff Writer
In print: Friday, November 21, 2008

TAMPA ? Joey Galloway says a broken right foot is what forced him to miss five games.
Galloway suffered what was described at the time as a foot sprain against the Falcons in Week 2. Coach Jon Gruden has referred to Galloway as the ''White Tiger" for his rare appearances after the veteran receiver also missed training camp and the preseason with a groin strain.
But now that Galloway is healthy, he has had trouble earning playing time. In three games since returning, he has four catches for 60 yards, and he did not have a reception Sunday against the Vikings.

Bucs move on without Joey Galloway

Wide receiver Joey Galloway doesn't appear to be in the Bucs' plans, based on coach Jon Gruden's comments Tuesday at One Buc Place.

Galloway has had a limited role in the Bucs' offense since returning from groin and foot injuries and did not play in Monday's 38-23 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

In Galloway's absence, Antonio Bryant has become the Bucs' go-to receiver. Bryant had a career game against the Panthers, with nine catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular one-handed grab.

''We're gonna play our best players, and Joey's had a lot go on this year with his injuries,'' Gruden said. "He's missed an awful lot of time. ... We've kind of moved on a little bit.''

Does Raheem Morris Have To Cut Joey Galloway?
Posted February 03, 2009 by Anwar S. Richardson
Updated Feb 03, 2009 at 08:27 AM

Now that the Super Bowl is over, it?s time for us to shift our focus back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We are all caught up on the offseason news, and hopefully players who did not like former coach Jon Gruden are done airing their grievances and everyone can move forward.

Speaking of the future, here is a realistic scenario new coach Raheem Morris will have to address.

Bucs WR Joey Galloway had been very productive prior to this season. Galloway had three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and was Tampa Bay?s main offensive threat. He sustained an injury last season, and even though he claimed to be healthy, Galloway was barely utilized. He finished with 13 receptions for 138 yards.

We all expect Tampa Bay to re-sign WR Antonio Bryant, but Galloway?s future remains unclear.

Not only is he 37-years old, but Galloway was Gruden?s favorite player (at least until last season). Galloway did not practice much during previous training camps and rarely participated in practices throughout the week because Gruden liked him so much.

However, Morris will need to establish his presence early, and often the easiest way for coaches to show players who is in charge is by cleaning house. There is no way players will take Morris seriously if he shows favoritism in his first season, especially considering veterans like Derrick Brooks always participate in practice when healthy.

So the question I?m throwing out there to Bucs fans this morning is: ?Does Raheem Morris need to cut Joey Galloway??

Bucs to release Galloway
The Bucs will release receiver Joey Galloway, according to his agent.

Galloway, 37, who was acquired in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys for Keyshawn Johnson in 2004, enjoyed three consecutive, 1000-yard seasons under Jon Gruden. But in 2008, he missed the first half of the season battling injuries, including two broken bones in his ankle.

He eventually lost his starting wideout job to Antonio Bryant, who was designated the team's franchise player on Friday.

Galloway finished the season with just 18 catches for. He was scheduled to earn a $2-million salary and had a $250,000 roster bonus due later this week.

Agent Shawn Trell said the Bucs informed him Galloway would be released. "I can confirm the Bucs are going to release Joey,'' Trell said in a text message Wednesday.

Last week, offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski said he could find ways to get Bryant and Galloway on the field together but apparently won't get that chance.

Galloway might not be only player released this week. Ike Hilliard, who turns 33 in April, has a $200,000 roster bonus due later this week and counts $1.3-million against the salary cap. But Hilliard's agent had not heard from the Bucs Wednesday morning.
