WR Ken-Yon Rambo (Grey Cup Champion - CFL)

Rambo rarin' to rejoin pals
By IAN BUSBY, CALGARY SUN
Last Updated: 30th January 2010

Ken-Yon Rambo has the vote of confidence from the Stampeders, so now he can hit the field and complete the comeback.

The star receiver inked a contract extension Friday and can shift his focus to getting ready for training camp and fully recovering from a torn ACL suffered last July.

"I'm trying to get as close to 100% as possible," said Rambo from his home in Dallas. "If it doesn't happen by the beginning of the season, I will hope to get there as fast as possible.

"It's a process. People told me that, but you don't know until you go through it. I'm patient and it's getting better. It's responding well to everything we're doing and that's all I can ask."

Once Rambo returns, it appears it will be under a new offensive boss. The Canadian Press is reporting Stamps offensive co-ordinator George Cortez will leave the team to join the NFL Buffalo Bills staff.

Cortez was a head-coaching candidate in both Winnipeg and Toronto.

Although Rambo was still in his option year, the new contract from the Stamps is a sign they believe he will once again be the go-to passcatcher he was in 2008.

During the Grey Cup season, Rambo led the CFL in yardage and he was a key component to the Stamps' offence in 2009 before suffering a season-ending injury July 24.

"Every game we lost I felt I could have helped out some way somehow," Rambo said. "When I was in Calgary, it was hard. I've never been injured like this before and sat out a whole year where I had to watch football.

"I'm always in good spirits. Everything happens for a reason. I did the best I could do being out there during practice and showing support."

Rambo eager to get back in the huddle
Star receiver says knee is doing well
By Allen Cameron, Calgary Herald May 15, 2010

You couldn't wipe the smile off Ken-Yon Rambo's face Friday.

A lovely spring day was in the offing.

He was surrounded by teammates, friends and fans at the Springbank Links golf club, about to tee off in the Henry Burris All-Star Weekend golf tournament.

And, best of all, training camp was only three weeks away for the Calgary Stampeders wide receiver.

Generally, training camp isn't cause for celebration.

But the Canadian Football League's top receiver in 2008 has waited for a considerable period of time to get back on the field after his 2009 campaign came to a premature end, with Rambo writhing on the turf at B.C. Place Stadium, knowing full well his right knee had been ripped to shreds.

"It's always good to come back to Calgary," said the 31-year-old Dallas resident, who returned Thursday.

"You know that football time is close, and it's been a long, long time waiting.

"I've been rehabbing this whole off-season, and I'm still doing it. The knee is coming along well, it feels strong, and I can't complain about the progress."

Rambo made 84 catches in 2008 and, after missing the opener last year with a hamstring problem, he made 17 catches in less than three games before getting hurt.

But not only does the Ohio State product believe he can get back to his 2008 form, he thinks he can improve on it.

"I'll be a better Ken-Yon Rambo than 2008," he predicted.

"(That) was a great year, but I have to keep things going up. I know what kind of a guy I am. I'm mentally strong and I know what I'm capable of doing, and I can't wait to get on that field.

"There's nothing new. I can still catch the ball, I can still run. I just have a whole new ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), and it's strong and healthy."

Stamps? Rambo vows to return as good as ever

CALGARY ? It is the lingering question that hangs over the Calgary Stampeders training camp like the low-hanging clouds that seemingly will never go away this month.

More than one question, in reality, but they all relate to one man: Ken-Yon Rambo.

When will he be back?

Is there a problem with his surgically rebuilt knee?

And, most importantly, will he be the same Ken-Yon Rambo who terrorized Canadian Football League defensive backs to lead the league in receiving in 2008?

Rambo knows the questions are coming, but that doesn?t mean he likes them.

Great work in this thread! Rambo is an amazing player and the Stumps are going to miss him now with Copeland gone. Even as a heated rival, I wish the best for Rambo. When healthy he makes the game better, and I'm a football fan first, Rider fan second. Anyways, great read, great site! Thanks!

I'll do my best. I was also wondering if Brent Johnson or Rob Murphy have dedicated threads like this ? Or were they not so good as Buckeyes?

They were both good Buckeyes.

Rob had as much talent as anyone in the country imo. he just wasnt consistent. Plus he wasnt the best student from what I heard. Glad to see he has made himself a nice career up North. Brent was fun to watch because he wasnt the biggest but man he busted his ass every game.

Here's a look at other CFL players to watch this season.

2. Ken-Yon Rambo, WR, Calgary Stampeders

The Stampeders were the CFL's best team in 2008 and Rambo was a big part of that success. The six-foot-one, 207-pound former Ohio State Buckeye led the league in receiving with 100 catches for 1,473 yards and also had a CFL-high 10 touchdown grabs. But Rambo's 2009 campaign was cut short -- the result of a season-ending knee injury in a 48-10 victory over the B.C. Lions. Rambo required surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament after his right leg buckled while being tackled by Lions linebacker Javier Glatt. With the Stampeders dealing veteran receiver Jeremaine Copeland to Toronto this off-season, the club needs a healthy and productive Rambo in 2010.

Rambo steps up work with offence

''It felt good,'' Ken-Yon Rambo said Tuesday after testing his surgically repaired knee with the Stamps' full offence.
Photograph by: Dean Bicknell, Calgary Herald, Calgary HeraldKen-Yon Rambo had simply had enough.

The Calgary Stampeders' wide receiver was a limited participant in practice in recent weeks as he finished the rehabilitation process for the surgically repaired knee that short-circuited his 2009 Canadian Football League season.

But on Tuesday, he decided it was time to take a big step forward.

So he sidled up to head coach John Hufnagel early during the workout at Mc-Mahon Stadium and asked if he could put on the pads and take part in some plays with the first-team offence.

Permission (finally) granted.

"It felt good. It felt real good," said a smiling Rambo, who looked sharp and fast before heading back to the locker-room for some more physio work. "I'm close, man. I'm close. When the boss lets go of the reins, that's when I'll get going. Every day it's felt better, but today was one of my good days."

While the rest of his Stampeders teammates were heading to the locker room following the rundown, Ken-Yon Rambo was racing back to the turf.

Looking like a little kid as he put on his receivers gloves, Rambo happily headed for more work.

Under the vigilant eyes of GM/head coach John Hufnagel, the star receiver who has been out of game action for a year raced around the field catching passes.

?I?m real close,? said Rambo, who suffered a horrible knee injury last July. ?When the guys were out east, we were out here pushing sleds and running hills. I feel great. That means we?re really close.?

CALGARY ? If Ken-Yon Rambo suits up for the Calgary Stampeders against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday, it will be a year to the day when he suffered his season-ending knee surgery.

Happy anniversary?

The next few days will tell whether the dynamic receiver will finally be fit enough to take to the field of battle after 360-odd days of standing on the sidelines.

?I feel real good,?? insisted Rambo, eager to get his sixth CFL season underway. ?I?m about 95 per cent, running real good and don?t have any soreness. That?s a plus. Like I said, I haven?t gone through a full practice since I?ve been out here. My knee?s getting better every day and I?m allowed to practice tomorrow, go through the motions and see how it feels.

?Yes, that?s the goal (to be ready for the ?Riders). I?m going to go through practice, the full go, and then talk to Huff. It?s all up to the head man.??

Rambo II: Slot role playin' out
By IAN BUSBY Calgary Sun
Last Updated: July 19, 2010

Everyone around McMahon Stadium is excited to have the ?old? Ken-Yon Rambo back in action.

But it might be a new-look Rambo who next takes the field for the Calgary Stampeders.

To put the best possible lineup on the field, the Stamps could be moving Rambo to the slotback spot where Jeremaine Copeland played every single game during his tenure with the club.

When the Stamps did a light practice at McMahon Stadium Monday, Rambo was in the slot and he was just thrilled to be out there.

?You can do a lot of things in that slot because you are coming downfield in motion,? Rambo said.

?I played there before. I liked it. There is a lot of inside stuff and you get to see the field a lot more.

?I like the (wideout spot) too because you can get single coverage there. I?m going to know the whole offence so wherever the coaches put me I will know where to go.

?I?m a confident guy. I have no doubt in my ability. I will do what I do.?

Rambo feels he must go through a full practice week before declaring himself ready for action.

But his goal is to suit up Saturday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Return of Rambo is up to . . . Rambo
Stampeders boss will let receiver decide if he's ready to play

Calgary Stampeders boss John Hufnagel had been in the middle of sorting through Ken-Yon Rambo's status Wednesday afternoon when, lo and behold, the hot topic himself sauntered over.

Rambo was instantly grilled. By his employer.

"Hey, Ken-Yon, are you going to play this week or not?" spouted Hufnagel, in mock anger.

"Up to you, boss," cackled the effervescent receiver, shaking Hufnagel's hand. "That's the bossman right here."

Rambo hinting he'll wait another week
'I have to be careful' with knee, receiver says
By Allen Cameron, Calgary Herald July 23, 2010

The decision has been made, but Ken-Yon Rambo isn't telling. Not yet, anyways.

But the Canadian Football League's leading receiver in 2008 offered the broadest hints to date on Thursday that his long-awaited return to the Calgary Stampeders' lineup won't come Saturday night against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

In fact, he already knows the decision.

"I know. But I can't tell you," he said with a smile. "That's for Huff to tell you."
