WR Ken-Yon Rambo (Grey Cup Champion - CFL)

Rambo ready for war

Last year's top receiver glad to be opposition target
By WES GILBERTSON, SUN MEDIA

Ken-Yon Rambo has four Canadian Football League campaigns under his belt, but he's not about to claim he's seen it all just yet.

"I'd never seen no snow in June before," Rambo said.

"But it's not a surprise to me."

Rambo won't catch anybody by surprise in his fifth season at McMahon Stadium.

Not after the Calgary Stampeders' sure-handed speedster finished atop the CFL receiving charts with 1,473 yards and hauled in eight touchdown passes in 2008.

He's still wearing No. 85, but Rambo might as well have a target on his back.

And the 30-year-old from Long Beach, Calif., doesn't mind the thought of a little extra attention from opposing defenders.

"If they do that, other guys are going to be wide open," Rambo said.

"As long as we go down the field and get a touchdown and score, shoot, it's nothing. I don't care if I have zero catches for zero yards if we win the game.

"It doesn't matter to me. I want to help the team in any way and I'm helping the team if they're double-teaming me or triple-teaming me."

Rambo, who has been hampered by a hamstring injury at training camp and missed his fifth consecutive practice yesterday, certainly boasted helping hands in 2008, when he was one of three CFL receivers to hit triple-digits in receptions.

The former Ohio State Buckeyes star notched a career-high five 100-yard outings and had at least two catches in every game. He was named an all-star for the first time.

Veteran Rambo gives tips
New receivers face tough battle
By IAN BUSBY, SUN MEDIA

For the first week of training camp, the door was cracked open slightly for the rookie Calgary Stampeders receivers.

With veterans Brett Ralph, Ryan Thelwell and Ken-Yon Rambo all sidelined, suddenly there was a chance for new players to shine.

That door was shut a little yesterday during Day 9 of camp, just two sleeps before the first pre-season game.

All three veterans returned to at least some action, meaning there will be fewer reps to go around.

Rambo, who like Thelwell was nursing a hamstring injury, practised yesterday morning and sat out the afternoon drills.

Although there are half a dozen players trying to take his job, Rambo spent the late session offering youngsters advice -- just as he's been doing all week.

That might not be recommended for some veterans, but Rambo hasn't had to worry about his spot for years. Neither has Jeremaine Copeland, Nik Lewis or Ralph.

So Rambo didn't mind talking with Titus Ryan after he took a spin in Rambo's position.

"When I was a rookie, I would ask questions," Rambo said. "Some veterans would help me, some wouldn't. I don't want to be one of the veterans who won't help a rookie with his future.

"I want to help them progress. If one of us goes down, they need to jump in there. We want to win games. We want to help them know what they need to do."

This is in all probability in the FWIW section, but I think it's great to see an OSU attendee (not sure if he's graduated) gain maturity. I don't believe he showed the same maturity while at OSU that he's showing now. "Giving something back" is a goot motto, as is "Paying forward", which is not something all of us can/will do.

Actually, it's great to see any young person doing this, but especially (to me) an OSU person. Go Bucks

Rambo's tender hammie may keep WR off field
By Allen Cameron, Calgary Herald
June 30, 2009

It's the question of the week at McMahon Stadium: will the league's reigning receiving champion be healthy enough to play in the Calgary Stampeders' season opener?

"Game-time decision, game-time decision," insisted Ken-Yon Rambo on Monday, after sitting out his fourth straight practice with a tender hamstring. "I want to play, definitely, but I don't want to do anything stupid and mess up the team and mess myself up for the rest of the season. I feel good, it feels a lot better. But it's very frustrating;I don't like sitting on the sideline. I like being out there and doing my work."

Stamps coach and general manager John Hufnagel said it would be "very fortunate" if Rambo is able to play on Wednesday, and the same applies to Canadian wideout Ryan Thelwell, who also is taking things easy with hamstring issues.

"That's how it is with hammies, right?" said Thelwell. "You have to wait and see. But it felt pretty good today. Ultimately, we'll wait to see how it feels on game day."

Stamps fall to Als in season-opener

July 1, 2009

The Calgary Stampeders couldn?t overcome a poor start or the kicking of Damon Duval in their 2009 season-opener at McMahon Stadium on a rainy Wednesday night.
The Stamps fell into an early 20-0 hole and wound up losing 40-27 to the Montreal Alouettes as the rematch of the 2008 Grey Cup produced a different winner.
Despite their early struggles, Calgary actually managed to tie the game at 27-27 but Duval?s fifth and sixth field goals of the contest put the Alouettes ahead to stay.

Scratches for the Stamps are LB Matt Grootegoed, DB J.R. Ruffin, REC Ken-Yon Rambo and DL Odell Willis.

Stamps attempt to rock the 'Boat

THE CANADIAN PRESS

CALGARY -- The Calgary Stampeders hope to celebrate CFL Retro Week with a performance reminiscent of last season.

The Grey Cup-champion Stampeders (0-2) will host the Toronto Argonauts (1-1) on Friday night at McMahon Stadium, when both teams will be wearing 1960s retro uniforms. Calgary knows it can't afford to fall to 0-3 in the difficult West Division, and won't be taking the Argos lightly.

"Toronto's coming in and I know their coach has them ready," said Stamps receiver Ken-Yon Rambo, who had a touchdown catch during last week's 42-30 road loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after missing Calgary's home opener with a hamstring injury.

"All our fans are going to be here and we've got the retro game with the old-school look. All the players love that and we're just ready to go out here and play."

Stampeders lose Rambo in victory over Lions
Allen Cameron, Canwest News Service
Published: Saturday, July 25, 2009

VANCOUVER -- It's not the way Ken-Yon Rambo wanted to contribute, but be assured, he had an impact in the biggest Calgary Stampeders victory of the young 2009 Canadian Football League season.

The league's reigning receiving champion had to be carted off the B.C. Place Stadium field on a stifling Friday night in Vancouver, the victim of an unflagged but by-all-appearances illegal horse-collar tackle by Lions linebacker Javier Glatt late in the first quarter that buckled his right knee.

But before he left the field, as he was being assessed on the sideline, his teammates rallied around him, putting together a touchdown drive that gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

CALGARY ? Just as Nik Lewis is set to return to the lineup, the Calgary Stampeders have lost Ken-Yon Rambo indefinitely.

The fact Rambo?s knee injury was inflicted on what looked like an illegal, but unflagged, horse-collar tackle against the B.C. Lions on Friday night was something Stamps GM and head coach John Hufnagel had to swallow Saturday.

?Most coaches would say that tackle would?ve been a flagged play,? said Hufnagel.

?When I asked the official, he said he thought he grabbed jersey just like the week before against Henry (Burris). It was jersey that time, it was not jersey this time. That doesn?t mean it?s right or wrong, what?s disappointing is I have a player that?s seriously injured.

?My concern right now is for Ken-Yon to have a good rehab.?

Stamps trample Argonauts
July 17, 2009

The Calgary Stampeders defence obviously had enough.

After allowing 82 points in the first two games of the season, both losses, the Stamps effectively kept the Toronto Argonauts in check and recorded a 44-9 victory Friday night at McMahon Stadium. The win was Calgary?s first of the 2009 season and allows the Stampeders to pull into a three-way tie for second place in the West Division with Edmonton and BC.
"We finally got a victory," said head coach/general manager John Hufnagel. "It was a great team effort out there. Some good things and still a lot of things to clean up, but at least we're going in the right direction."

Stamps roll over Lions

July 24, 2009

In the absence of a couple of key receivers Friday night at BC Place, the Calgary Stampeders turned to a couple of familiar faces ? and one new face ? on the way to recording a 48-10 victory over the BC Lions.
With Nik Lewis back in Calgary and Ken-Yon Rambo forced to leave the game in the first quarter, Henry Burris went to veteran Jeremaine Copeland and rookie Jermaine Jackson to float the Stampeders? air attack....

INSIDER: Rambo vows to return

July 29, 2009
The Stampeders on Wednesday announced that Ken-Yon Rambo, the Canadian Football League?s leading receiver in 2008, will be lost for the season because of a knee injury suffered Friday night in a game against the BC Lions.

?The repair on Ken-Yon?s knee will occur in two stages,? said head coach/general manager John Hufnagel. ?He?s booked for surgery on Tuesday and there will be a scope to repair the meniscus and also clean out the knee joint. He will then have four weeks of rehab and he?ll then undergo another procedure to fix his ACL.

?Ken-Yon understands the difficulty in recovering from this type of injury, but he?s very committed to being here in training camp next year.?

Rambo, who is in his fifth season with the Stampeders, is doing his best to cope with the setback.

?Obviously this is a hard time for me right now,? said the Ohio State product. ?After coming off a great season last year and being the leading receiver in the CFL and wanting to help the team get back to the Grey Cup this year. Unfortunately, I?m not going to play the rest of the season. You all know the extent of my injury. How I?m feeling? It?s mixed emotions. It?s football. I?m here today, I?m breathing.?

Though he won?t play again in 2009, Rambo will remain with the team for the remainder of the season.

Rambo teaching a thing or two
By IAN BUSBY
Last Updated: 24th September 2009

Ken-Yon is getting a taste of his potential post-playing days, and he hasn't found it bitter.

He spends the day standing on the football field, giving occasional instructions to a younger player and then hoping they heed what he tells them.

But the injured Stampeders receiver has become an important part of the team this week.

With newcomer Romby Bryant trying to get up to speed on the Stampeders' offence, Rambo has spent practice time working with him on the nuances of Henry Burris, et al.

In all, there will be only three full practices before the Stamps face the B.C. Lions tomorrow at McMahon Stadium with new players in the lineup.

"This is easier than teaching a kid," said Rambo, who is out for the year with a torn ACL.

"A professional has done everything and knows what you are talking about. He's been there and done it. With a kid, you have to go through step by step and explain everything in detail.

"I've tried to help him out. I'm here to help and let the new guys know how we run the routes, tell them what Hank is looking for.

"It's easy. Romby knows it all because he's played pro for a long time.

"But it's harder to say it than just do it. Telling the guys who know the CFL terminology, who have played for a while, it's easy to tell him how to do something.

"Everybody runs similar stuff throughout the CFL with just a few tweaks here and there."

Bryant appreciates the advice.

Although he has offensive co-ordinator George Cortez and receivers coach Pete Costanza working with him as well, Rambo offers a different viewpoint because he played the wideout spot to such great success, leading the CFL in yardage last season.

"He's showing me some of his tricks," said Bryant, who had more than 1,200 yards last season.

"There is a lot he can help with. I'm still not perfect. I'm not a rookie but there is a lot I can learn.

"Coming from Ken-Yon, he was the leading receiver last year, so it's good to have him. This is only my second year in the CFL.

"These are good guys, so it's not a surprise they are helping me."

Rambo is doing rehab right now but can move fine without crutches.

The soon-to-be 31-year-old vows to return next season when the Stamps may have a logjam of receivers if Bryant plays well and decides to stay in Calgary.

Even if Rambo was able to play right now, there is a good chance he would do everything possible to get the newcomer up to speed.

"I've never coached officially before, but it's been part of my career," Rambo said.

"You are always trying to help other players in what routes to run and that.

"Coaching goes into football in every aspect. Veterans know mostly everything there is to know at the position. It all goes into helping out the young guys."

If his career were to end today, Rambo isn't sure he would become a coach the following year the way former teammate Dave Dickenson did with the Stamps.

He probably sees himself more like former Stamps star Travis Moore, who took a few years away before returning to the CFL as an assistant with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

"I've been playing football for a long time," Rambo said.

"When I'm done playing, I'm going to relax for a bit. I've been playing since 1987. It's been continuous. That's 21 years.

"After football, I'm going to relax for a while and see what else is out there."
